Those who work outside of the home..how many weeks of vacation?

I have been with my co. for 7 years. I get 3 weeks vacation, 2 weeks personal, and 6 weeks illness. Pretty good, I think. I will get 4 weeks vacation when I have been here 10 years.
 
DH's is complicated.

He started at 3 weeks due to his pay grade. (most of his team is at two weeks, and then three weeks comes after 5 years)

He has the option to buy a week, and he does.

He then gets a scad of personal/sick days. I don't know how much sick time he has, but I think its like 20-25 days floating out there.


I work for a school district.

I work when school is in session. But I do get a substantial amount of sick days. (We get 10-12 per school year, so a calendar year you will get a bunch, maybe 20--since it straddles two "school years") We do get two personal days a year as well.
 
OK - I think my job wins for the worst time off policy.

1 week after 1 year
2 weeks after 5 years
5 personal days

6.5 holiday days

It's a manufacturing facility with bosses who don't see the need for time off. (Or for rewarding loyalty / tenure).

We often run 6 or 7 days a week during busy season (holidays), so no vacation may be scheduled btwn Oct and December.

Wasn't so bad pre-kids, but now trying to finagle day care around the holidays for my school age DS is giving me headaches.
 
3 weeks to start, then increasing every year of service until you max out at 4 weeks. 9 holidays, 6 sick days. we can't accumulate.
 

After 5 years we get 3 weeks...then have to wait for 15 to get 4! I've been here 11. SO I get 3 vac., 2 personal days and ten sick days.
 
Year 1 = 3 weeks vacation + 5 sick/personal + 10 holidays.
Years 2+ = 4 weeks vacation + 5 sick/personal + 10 holidays.
Love this company.
 
I get 5 weeks vacation, 6 personal days, 12 sick days that we can save from year to year and sell back when we retire if we don't use them and 13 paid holidays a year.
 
Cajunmommy, I think you are more the norm, and the others listed are more the exception. We give our secy's three weeks, but they don't use it all, and can carry over, etc. I usually take a week, and maybe a couple long weekends. Personally I don't see the need for an increase in time off due to the time at the co., but, that's just me. I know, a different view.
 
Now that I think about it, there are a few other details I left out.

No carry over of vacation time - use it or lose it.

For the holidays, we usually end up having to work a weekend day to make up for the day off.

I must admit, however, they are a bit lenient when I need time off to deal with school or medical needs for the kids (no other family in town). They allow me to sneak away for an hour or so when absolutely necessary.

I just wish they would adopt the philosophy that workers need a physical & mental break from the task at hand. Furthermore, a 3rd week of vacation to reward those with more than 10yrs service would truly be a welcome benefit.
 
DH is in the military, so we get 30 personal days per year. Anytning over 60 days banked is lost at the beginning of the next fiscal year (Oct 1). While this SOUNDS generous, they count weekends against him, even though he never works weekends, so it really comes out to 4 weeks. EVeryone gets the same amount.... basically, you earn 2.5 days per month, but they let you "go in the hole" if you haven't earned enough to cover your vacation, as long as you're obligated to serve long enough to earn it back.

They don't get sick pay, per se, but in order for you not to go to work when you're sick, you have to report to sick call instead, and that can take all day, so they usually just go to work sick :rolleyes: He *sometimes* gets federal holidays. Yeah, he's a federal employee so you'd think he'd get them, but many military offices (like his, for instance) have to be staffed around the clock every day, holiday or not, so he has to work some of them at least. We went 2 years once without him getting a single federal holiday off....just how the schedule worked out :rolleyes:

DFIL worked for one company that gave him 5 weeks every year for 30 years. Retired there and got a job at a new company as a VP and he only has 2 weeks a year! How chintzy can you get that the VP's only get 2 weeks? It's supposed to be 1 week your first year, and 2 weeks once you've been there 2 years (for all employees) and that's the best it gets....but since he's a VP they went ahead and gave him the 2 weeks his first year. Seems pretty yucky.

One job I had I got NO paid time off at all....holidays, sick, vacation, nothing. Worked in a little antique store with one owner and she said she couldn't afford to give me anything extra. My ONLY benefit there was a merchandise discount.

I worked in a churc daycare that followed the school calendar. We didn't get paid days we didn't work....so the holidays hurt us. We did get 5 sick days a year, though.
 
Chris gets 4 weeks a year and has been with the company 4 years. He will get an addition 4 week sabbatical next year after being with the company for 5 years (instead of 7 years for some odd reason). We can't wait for that sabbatical!!
 
PTO for my company as well.

0-4 years, you get 20 days.

5+ you get 25 days

I think the next "bump" is when you're here 10 years, but I'd have to check.

Also have 8 paid holidays.

10 sick days
AND we close at 1pm on Fridays in the summer and before every major holiday.

We can carry over no more than 7 days and they have just instituted a policy that in the future, you will not be paid for unused vacation when you leave. That was costing them a fortune.
 
I work for a European company and get 32 days vacation plus 7 holidays. Next year I will get 37 days vacation for my 10th year. Sick time is at my discretion since I am on salary, can work from home and my boss is in Europe.

I had a pretty good situation but my company has been sold and this is one area that I seem to be losing out.

I have 9 years at the company at get 3 weeks. plus I "buy" a week (i.e. the deduct 1/12th of the value of the week's vacation from each month's pay). I get 1 personal day and 11 holiday's.
we have unlimited sick time - but suprisingly no one abuses it - I would guess that I miss about 3 days a year sick between myself and my son. Most of those I work all or part of the day from home on my PC so I really don't miss much!!

At new company I still get 3 weeks but I can't "buy" anymore! we get 10 holiday's and 48 hrs (6 days) of sick time - but no more than 2 of these can be for a sick child/spouse/parent!!

Actually NONE of our sick days are supposed to be taken for anyone sick other than yourself....if your kid is sick you are "supposed" to use a personal day or go into your vacation time...though no one really ever does that....

WOW!! May I ask where you work? Or if that's too much, is this a national company or just a local one? And what sector? That's a really great vacation package! Are the rest of your benefits that good, too?

that's not true. it depends on the company. my company allows sick time for dependent care.
 
I get 3 weeks of annual leave, 3 weeks of sick leave, atleast a week for Christmas (last year it was 8 or 9 days), 2 days at Thanksgiving, and 4 other holidays. Plus, I have a couple of days of personal leave. Almost all my al and my sl carry over to the next year if I don't use them, too.
