I rented points for our trip in September and was told that I would have to pay the tax when I check in, which would equal to about $5/a day (tax is about 4% in the state). Does that sound about right? For those who rented points (and are not DVC members), what was the amount you paid in taxes when you checked-in?

TIA!

Hawai'i Transient Accommodations Tax

For all stays at Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas, Ko Olina, Hawai'i, the State of Hawai'i imposes a nightly transient accommodations tax based upon the number of vacation points required for the stay and the Annual Dues per vacation point for the calendar year of the stay. This tax must be paid by check-out. The amount of the tax will vary from year to year and is subject to change.

Thanks everyone! Yes, we are staying at Aulani. I just didn't want to be surprised with a huge amount when we check out. We saved so much renting points vs rack rate and to end up paying so much in taxes would've defeated the whole purpose!

At Aulani I believe the tax is based on the number of occupants. We've stayed there twice (in a grand villa both times) and paid the tax but I just can't recall how much it was right now. I know it was a fairly small amount or it would have stuck with me better.

As posted by wishicouldgomoreofte, Hawaii's Transient Accommodations Tax is computed based on the number of points for the length of stay and the resort annual due rate per point, not on the number of occupants. The formula for the TAT is explained here.

For our most recent Aulani trip earlier this month, the Transient Accommodation Tax was explained by a CM at check-in. The total amount of the tax was charged to our credit card at time of check-in. In prior visits in 2012 and 2014, the TAT was posted daily to our room portfolio and charged to our credit card at check-out. Apparently , Aulani has changed its procedure on collecting the TAT.

It's not uncommon for various government entities to charge taxes due at the resort. This happens in tourist areas frequently. We just paid several hundred dollars in Aruba just over a month ago but we were there 17 nights in a 2 BR plus had two rooms for most of that time. The rate was $11.88 per day for a 2 BR. For HI for timeshares there's a daily fair market rental value calculation then a tax % of that that has been 9.25% and then dropped to 7.25% this past year. There was talk of it being increased to 11.25% but I'm not sure where that stands. I don't think HI has a sales tax though they do have an excise tax charged to business which they often pass through.
