Those pesky “extended” 2018 banked points and waitlist

Hmm I’m assuming that if you have 2018 banked points to 2019 UY and they expire. But qualify for the extension. Will you be able to do a waitlist for a date prior to expiration? I assume based on passed experience no.

I don't see why not. You would just waitlist the reservation you want and if it comes through, MS should use the extended points for it (assuming the waitlisted reservation will occur prior to the expiration of the extended points).

Once things settle a bit, you could call MS and ask the CM to add a note to your waitlist that your account has extended points that should be used.

That said, I don't think you can waitlist if you have points in your account that could be used to book something. If that's the case, you could book the reservation you want online (assuming availability exits to do that), using your available current use year points. Then you would call MS to ask that the CM reallocate the points in that reservation to use the extended points and free up the current use year points.

Good luck!

I have some points to use in from 2018 that are part of the extension, and I already have a 10 day reservation at CCV in late October. Would MS be willing to use these 2018 points and move back some borrowed points from UY 2021 back to UY 2021?

That I don't know, and I can't recall any reports of that particular situation. You'll have to call. If you do, please let us know how it turns out.

I think you could only waitlist now if you have a June UY. If you have a later UY I do not think you could waitlist using extended points. I will use an AUG UY as an example.
There has been no official announcement, but it has been reported 2018 banked points for Aug UY will not be extended until after they expire on July 31, 2020, and at that time they will only be visible to MS and can only be used by calling MS. If you waitlisted for a vacation arriving between August 1st and November 30th and that waitlist came through before July 31st, I do not see how they could use those extended points for the waitlisted reservation, if those points will not be extended until after July 31st.

However, as @CarolMN said, if you have current year points you could use for the waitlist, and the waitlist comes through using those current year points, it has been reported that once the extended points become available you could call MS and have them reallocate points so that extended points are used.

Someone reported that any replacement of extended points to free up borrowed that are in reservations not during closure will not be eligible for returns.

Hmm... I might actually be okay with this, now I'm debating hanging up with member services.

Hi-I spoke w/CM yesterday about that-I also have 53 2018 June UY points-he said they can be reallocated for my august trip (vero) and I would get points back but they would not go back to 2021, they would stay in 2020, so I would have unitl May 2021 to use them

Summary of call, hope this is helpful:

1) Appears to be a blanket "return borrowed points to original use year" policy "until further notice" which means that it can disappear at any time.

2) Extended points (i.e. banked August UY 2018 points used for a 2019 reservation) are indeed extended to 11/30/2020 (per email), AND can be used for reallocation of an existing reservation. So if you see something NOW that is available and you have points available (current UY or future UY to borrow from), snag it and then call. Since it's a manual adjustment (the extended points), you need to call.

BUT

3) There is a risk in reallocation IF the reservation needs to be cancelled in order to return future UY points to their original UY. The CM said they're able to see inventory so if, say, there is literally one room left, they can warn you that you might lose the room attempting to reallocate if there's a W/L request or someone else booking.

This part I'm iffy about, but she mentioned that if there are points available that are not needing to be repatriated to the original UY, the reallocation process is smoother on their end and the risk is much lower (zero?) of losing the reservation.

Also another risk is that the policy to return all points to the original UY may be rescinded at any time, so you possibly could be stuck with having borrowed points unable to push them forward. IMO given that they are restricting borrowing, asking to return points to the original UY is actually a ++ for DVC.

Whew.

Darn, I should have asked if I could book NOW for extended points not yet expired (August 2018 banked which expire 7/31/20). I couldn't ask because nothing was available anyway =(

Plus I think that has been answered as a "not until the points actually expire"

I'm affirming the 2018 experience. I had an affected reservation that would qualify for the extension. I was told 2018 Oct UY must wait until after 9/30/2020 to use the points for the extended period 10/01- 11/30/2020. AND I was told that I could reserve now with other available points to get a "reservation on the books" and then reallocate points to use up the "extended points" from 2018 UY when they become available after 09/30/2020. (With about 1 week lag to transfer the points to the extension period.)

It seemed that the CM agreed if I wait till the 2018 are transferred and eligible to be used during the extension period, there may be difficulty in finding available inventory. Therefore, since there was availability for the room type and dates of travel, I booked with currently available points with the intention to call member services at the appropriate time to reallocate the extension points for the reservation.

Now, I don't know if the future will confirm what was just put into practice, but I thought it might be helpful to hear what some owners are trying out in order to work with the current processes DVC has in place.

Thanks for sharing, it does seem like more reports this week are consistent that they will not require new reservations for the points.

I would certainly add that if I was someone in this boat, just don’t borrow points to secure something now.

They said the program to bring back expired points and other things would run June 1 to 5 and to call back June 6 or 7. I was able to call June 3 because I saw my expired 2019 points were now shoipwing as banked points for 2020.
