Thoroughly irked...

Haven't they ever watched the movies "Meet the Parents" or "Meet the Fockers"? :rotfl2:

My mom was a nurse and there were PLENTY of male nurses, most of them married, that worked in the hospital. I don't know about where you are but nurses around here make pretty good money.

Here in metro Atlanta a nurse with my experience working full-time can easily make about $60,000/yr. Even right out of the box, they make almost $40,000.

I agree my sister & BIL are idiots. My son("the slacker", as they say  )wants to be an actor. He's a terrible student. I don't wish for a moment that he'd go to nursing school because he doesn't have the drive for it. Acting is his life, so he'll probably be broke and skinny. But he'll be happy.

During my 28yrs as a nurse I have known many male nurses who worked in OB, ED, pysch, peds, NICU, CCU, and neuro. Every one of them has been equal or better than their peers. If anything, they are more willing to go to bat for a patient than a female nurse is. I've been on the working end and the receiving end of male nurse care and there has been no difference. I have never felt "weird" or shy around a male nurse. I guess that's why I was thunderstruck when my sister and BIL started spouting off all this baloney. They are so far off-base they don't even know where they are :rolleyes1

This has nothing to do with Pedi but when my Mom was dying she had a male nurse.. He was so wonderful, caring, sympathetic to the family... I cannot say enough about male nurses..

Shame on them for not encouraging him...you keep him encouraged.

Same experience here. My mom's last two weeks in the hospital, the best nurses were the men. We had a couple of good women, but all the men were great.

Suggestion-my sister is taking a 10 week CNA program, then the hospital she's interested in working in will hire her and pay her way through her RN program. He might want to investigate that with hospitals nearby.

I think the more people "cross the gender line" professionally, so to speak, the better off society will be. I think it's a wonderful profession for him to be in & I hope he does well. :flower:

I"m glad your nephew has you to back him up.

I loved Paediatrics (oops, I forgot my american spelling) and I'm a guy. Albeit I'm a doctor, but i would be really pleased for your nephew. Everyone tells me I'm great with kids, which always surprises me. I can't wait to have my own... well, eventually!

When I has surgery this summer, the guy who prepared me for it was a male nurse. He was pretty cool and when he put in my IV he gave me a shot to numb it. Very nice guy, made me feel very comfortable as I was pretty nervous.

I'm sure his parents wont mind when he is working at a hospital making good money.

It's a shame that there are so many gender stereotypes! Nobody is gay or straight for working in a certain job.

I would be so proud. I hope his parents come to their senses and let him pursue the career of his choice without denigrating that choice.

Can you stand one more shocked reply?

Gosh, many of my collegues happen to be guys and it's a non-issue, just as it would be if we happened to work in an office or whatever. Tons of guys work in the pediatric ER, Pediatric ICU, NICU, peds Burn Unit, child and adolescent Psych units, and several work on the pediatric floors. Four of our department heads (head nurses) are guys and so are lots of our critical care transport nurses.

Nursing is an awesome career with incredible flexibility. The nursing shortage is not going anywhere. Most new grads today can choose from many offers. I always wanted to marry a nurse, but it didn't work out that way. His parents should go tour a Children's Hospital and see all the men working there.

I wish your nephew the best of luck. I'm sure he'll be a great nurse! :goodvibes

I believe you are going to find more male nurses every year. The salary, at least around here $40 an hour appx, is going to attract all genders to the career. Not only is it a good paying job and an honest career but with more women working, married men need flexible schedules too.

I was in the hospital with heart problems last week and my nurse was male, he was great and talked about different movies we had seen every time he came and checked on me. I have never gotten that sort of personalization with a nurse who was female.

Good for your nephew, it seems he has his head on straight....Now for his parents, I am not so sure.

I certainly hope your nephew follows his dreams. His parents should be ashamed of themselves. :guilty:
