Not that kind of thong men!

What is your understanding of a thong shoe? Today as I was leaving work my boss pulled me aside and told me that my shoes were out of dress code because they were considered a thong shoe. I REALLY don't get this one. Honestly, I feel like right now I can do nothing right. I feel like they are riding me trying to get me to quit since they don't really have grounds to fire me.

Once I get some opinions I'll tell you what shoes I was wearing so you can give opinions on that too - if you don't mind.

My definition of a thong shoe is anything that has a strap that goes between the big toe and the next big toe. They can range from your standard rubber flip-flop to a nice leather, heeled strappy sandal.

I guess, technically, a thong shoe would be anything with a strap that goes between your toes.

I think it's pretty common to have flip-flops (the casual, flat kind like you'd wear to the pool) on the "don't" list. But for business casual kinds of offices, there are lots of dressier sandals that are still technically thongs that would sure seem to be appropriate.

Is your dress code in writing somewhere?

I also agree, any type of shoe wth the strap between the toes. No matter how nice or expensive they are, they are still a thong shoe.

I agree too...my workplace doesn't allow open toed shoes at all - they say it doesn't look professional...

So there is no way at all you would EVER consider this a thong?

Yes, the policy is in writing and I don't have a problem at all with the policy. My problem is with my boss saying my Crocs are thongs and that in order for me to keep wearing them I need a letter from my doctor since it is against company policy.

Agree with everyone about what a thong shoe is.

Myst

Chell, that is definately NOT a thong. We get away with much "thong-ier" shoes than that where I work (I am in FL though) and we have the no thong policy too.

Crocs are definitely not thongs, but also not really an appropriate work shoe either (depending on what you do.)

I would say that is closer to a clog than a thong. My office is pretty casual and we have dress down Fridays where tees, sneakers, and jeans are okay. I'm very happy thus far.

Thank you! So there isn't something that I'm missing here? I thought maybe I was missing something. You all have made me feel so much better!

Guess it is time to start looking for a new job. Anyone have any suggestions for a good computer job? I would LOVE to get on with FEMA.

That is not what I would consider a thong.

Just wanted to add that they updated the school dressbook at my husbands school this year. It said no thongs, but unfortunately in this day (even at an elementary school) shoes are not what people think of when they hear thong. I think it now says flip flops.

Beach Crocs are no where near being a thong. What does your dress code say? I know ours used to say no open-toed shoes. Yeah, it's got 'vents' but they are not opened toed. I'd contest it. (I also LOVE my crocs and would be lost without them.)

Definitely not a thong.

But I don't think they're appropriate for even a very casual office, either (IMHO)...

Maybe the boss is confusing thongs with slings... I think a sling is anything with an open heel and a heel strap, and this would fit that definition.

I just do computer work all day. There are several ladies in the office who actually wear flip-flops so I'm going to pay a whole lot more attention to what they wear this next week.

The reason I like the Crocs so much is because my foot is about as wide as it is long and those are so wide and comfortable. Anyway, I'm not much on fashion person. Oops.

Our policy says specifically no thongs for shoes and does not go into any detail.

You're going to leave your job because they won't let you wear Crocs? :confused3

No, sorry if it came across that way. Sometimes I forget to post all my thoughts.

Not a Thong in my opinion, but I wouldn't wear that type of shoe to an office job either.. Is there anything in your handbook about open heeled shoes? Maybe that is why it is unacceptable?? :confused3

No there isn't. It is not the type of shoe I would normally wear in an office either but considering the problem I have finding shoes that fit and the skin on my feet has recently become very sensitive - this is the best option I have at the moment without ordering another pair of custom shoes. Since the skin has become even more sensitive lately to some of my socks I don't want to go down that road until I have to because of the cold weather.
