I am looking at a Thomasville dining room set on craigslist. It is pricey, but like new. It is a 108" oval table, with 6 chairs (2 captain) and a large lit china cabinet with 4 doors. Very formal looking, queen anne style with very dark wood. Any idea what this may retail for? Just a very general idea is fine, but I'm not familiar with this brand. Thanks!

I have always associated Thomasville as heirloom quality, especially if not made with the particle/pressed board stuff.

It depends what type of wood and if it's made with pressed wood, but other than that it is expensive stuff. Sorry, I know I am not exactly being helpful, but it is in general good quality.

GL!

Thomasville is a good quality mid-range furniture line. If it is cherry finish, it would be around $7k for the set you describe.

Solid cherry, higher end furniture would run you that much just for the table and chairs.

Sorry, but it's not heirloom quality.

If you can get it for between $1500 and $3000, you're getting a decent deal, depending upon the condition and age.

Hmm, I think you may be right per their website:

Where is Thomasville Furniture made?
Thomasville has been making quality furniture in North Carolina for nearly 100 years. While our furniture manufacturing continues in the U.S., some is now made in other countries. We want you to know that no matter where it is manufactured, when you see the Thomasville logo on a piece of furniture, you can be certain that it has been made to Thomasville's strict standards of quality in materials and craftsmanship. Please be assured that if our name is on it, the company that has been making America's favorite furniture for 100 years stands behind it.

I have an older real wood Thomasville set and have had it for years. I guess anything that is real wood and is non IKEA is heirloom quality to me. ;)

I would think $6000 - $8000 would be the retail. Depending on how old it is and condition I would pay up to $3000 for it.

I love their furniture.

Look at the joints of the drawers. See how they're tongue-in-groove? They fit into each other, instead of just being glued or nailed together.

See how the drawers are on metal tracks with ball bearings? They slide in and out well.

Our bedroom set was bought in 1989 and has stood up well. Our dining room set was bought in about 1992 and has likewise stood up.

they want $3500 but it also comes with a server. I love it, but am very cheap, so I'm not sure what to do. We have a "functional" set but I want something nicer. Glad to hear it sounds like a fair (but not super) deal. It's hard to do now that I have the Poly booked for 8 nights in :woohoo: August.

Think about that server!! Mine gets used every single time we have company. It has a heat-proof (probably the wrong word) top when you open it up. So I always put my coffee urn there with the mugs and tea and stuff-- it's wonderful!! There's plenty of room inside for all my tablecloths and stuff.

I could find a way to get by without the china cabinet, but I LOVE that server!!!

edited to add: this isn't the same as mine, but it shows the capabilities: http://www.thomasville.com/Item2967/Bridges-2.0-Mobile-Server.aspx

what did you pay for that? :)

When will you be at the Poly? We're going 8/24-9/1. :yay:

How funny-- I just went to the Thomasville site and found any server! We bought our set in like 1994--I have no idea what we paid for it, but it was a decent chunk of our tax return that year :)

We'll be gone before you get there-- we're going from the 13th to the 19th. We're both teachers, and have to be back to school the following week :)

Can I assume you got free dining?

I got 40% off the Poly which came out cheaper for us. I feel kinda silly not staying somewhere cheaper and using the f/d, but we love the Poly. :)

We got the same PIN code, and you're right-- it's cheaper!

This will be our first time since 1990, our first at the Poly, and the first time for the kids... I can't WAIT!!

I bought a Thomasville Dining Room set in 1996 for $2500. It included the table with 2 leaves, 6 chairs, lighted china cabinet and server. It is medium oak (popular in 1996 and my favorite). The Thomasville set that I fell in love with was next to this set and was $7,000 - table and server looked the same - china cabinet had fancier glass. I also bought an entertainment center in 1996 for $4500. Thomasville seems to have 2 different price ranges. In the entertainment center the drawers are line in green felt. In the dining room set - no lining. The dining room set is used often and has held up fine. It looks good, works well.

Try offering less than that! They can always say "no" if they do not want to take less. Also - before you commit to $3500, I would want to actually see it. Someone's idea of "barely used" is way different than someone else's.

I would definitely go see it. :) I'm not sure how much $$ I want to spend at all since we don't really NEED it. We have a formal DR in this house with a very casual set that was fine in our old house. Our kitchen is very big and we can comfortably fit 12 in there, so I'm not sure we would really use this, for anything but show. But boy do I WANT it.

I found out it is a cherry finish. Should I ask her if her price is "firm"? or offer something? I don't really want to go see it if she won't take anything lower, as I don't think I can justify $3500 even if it is "worth" it. She did say she is moving and downsizing, so I imagine she has a date she needs it out of there. I don't want to rip anyone off either.

I don't want to rip anyone off either.

If you give her a really low offer...she doesn't have to accept it, so there is no way you could rip her off. If she has had a lot of interest from other people in the pieces, she may mention that, which may impact your game plan.

I watch craigslist furniture every so often in my area, and it seems like people put stuff up at $X on one day, and then a couple of days laters it is 90% of X, and then it continiues to go down from there.

Don't forget, it is used furniture. So, while she may have paid $7000 for it, which I doubt, because who buys furniture at list price, that isn't your issue. The only value for it right now is what someone is willing to pay for it.

Or - you could go look at it, say you really like it, and let her know, your budget is only $2,500 or whatever, and if she can't find a person to buy it at $3500, then ask if she would call you.
