On the North facing flower bed that has pink carpet roses planted in it currently, I am planning to add two tall English Obelisks to train "Climbing Joseph's Coat" roses up. I think the addition of the coral and yellow with pink will help add interest and the obelisk will add some height interest. I needed to add some hot color to the mix too - as the adjoining two beds will have a lot of tropical colors again this year. This bed though is expected to be long term AND low maintenance. Anyway, this is what the obelisk support looks like:

And this is what the Climbing Joseph's Coat rose looks like:

Here's the description:

"The Ever-Changing, Always-Beautiful Climber!
Red buds open to orange blooms that change to yellow with a touch of crimson before maturing!

For a bright spot in your plantings, 'Climbing Joseph's Coat' has no equal. This Rose seems to change colors daily over its long bloom season, giving you a sunset of rich hues you'll never get tired of admiring!

3-inch cardinal-red buds open to marigold-orange blooms that in turn change to bright yellow with a touch of crimson before maturing to cardinal-red again!

All colors are present at one time on plants that can reach up to 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Mass plantings on a fence or pillar are particularly effective, allowing you to enjoy a panorama of color all season long. Zones 5-9. "

I have always seen Josephs Coat as a large rambler rose... but it makes sense that it could be a trained climber. Looking forward to this addition to the garden. The obelisks are here already - I just need to put them together. Now I have to wait for the roses. :(

WOW, that flower is beautiful!

now, when I read your post title, I thought you were going to add that kidney stone to your garden. I mean, it should take a place of honor, right? All kidding aside, i hope he feels great again soon.

What a great idea, Laura! :) I'd like to add another climber, and being able to get three colours in one plant is a big bonus. Do you know if it is very fragrant or not? Really, if I was able to get the darn thing to actually survive, I guess I should be happy with that! :)

LOL Vanessa! :)

I do hope your DH is feeling much better, Laura.

Those should be lovely....:D

Kim - since they do not talk about it's scent... I would be willing to bet it is mild to non-existent. I have seen large rambler specimens of this plant... but I do not recall a scent to them specifically. I have admired them for the dramatic color and the long bloom period (something I highly value in a perennial plant).

THAT is going to be a grand addition!!! I just can't wait for the photos!!!! Good luck.
