I think the thing some people were trying today is if you have a bunch of really large threads (cliques, exchanges riddles or what have you) all trying not to fall to page 2 it's hard to sometimes see or find the other types of posts that might be of interest.

I don't dis for long periods of time so scrolling through to page 3-4 to find out what other topics might be around can sometimes be a challenge.

Hey reading this gave me a solution to everyone's distress about having clique threads and game threads and exchange threads totally taking up page one of the CB.

Just don't read page one at all, if you are not interested in those threads. Start with page 2

tarheelmjfan, that's true and why I don't like even calling these threads cliques, even though I've been using the word (I like "club" better. I hate cliques. The are exclusive rather than inclusive, which I do not like. Goes against my every fiber to exclude people.

Someone posted earlier, and I apologize for not remembering the name - started with a C, I think, about the so called clique threads clogging up the works and causing others not to post. Though I can see how that could be a problem, I guess I must confess my niavete (if I spelled that right) about what all are 'clique' threads. I do know that on the Maelstrom thread that it gets bumped a lot by posting, and sometimes by folks saying, we shouldn't be on page 2. I've done that myself a few times. I don't however see how that would be the cause of someone not posting. Why would the presence of 'clique' threads cause someone else to not post?

Because when everyone bumps their own clique threads up to page 1, then page 1 is filled with nothing but clique threads. If you're a new poster (or a poster who doesn't have much time) and you see that the front page of the CB is entirely cliques, then you're probably just going to go somewhere else rather than search through back pages trying to find something to which you can contribute.

What I often do is to search my username and find the threads that I have posted on. Perhaps there is an easier way to accomplish the same goal, but this shows what threads I've posted to and I can reply to the ones I want to reply to.

I figure a few people might be interested in this, so y'all just know that I'm NOT hijacking the thread. I hope I get this right :

It may or may not be easier, but this is how I manage keeping up with my threads, my subscriptions, notifications, etc. Click on "User CP" up at the top (next to "FAQ"). You'll get a list of all the threads you are subscribed to that have new posts on them since you last looked.

Then, to see all the threads you have ever subscribed to (but not those you may have unsubscribed to), go down to the bottom of that list and click on "View all subscribed threads".

If you go down to the bottom of that "all subscribed threads" list, you can change your subscription and/or e-mail notification status for whichever of those threads you want. Just check the box next to the ones you want to change, and use that little pull down menu.

I usually:
1) don't worry about changing the e-mail notification status on "short-term" threads
2) keep it set up to get e-mail notifications to any threads I'm particularly interested in seeing the replies to or that I have started myself.
3) quickly turn off e-mail notifications to lengthy or ongoing threads (such as this one, the YaYa thread, certain meet threads).

But I keep my subscriptions to ALL threads I've ever subscribed to so that I can refer back to them at a later date. I am no longer swamped by e-mail notifications, but I still get notifications for those that I do want them for.

I don't know for sure - this might also work in reverse. If you have e-mail notifications turned off in your "User Options" (I have them turned on), then you might be able to just go in the same way I just described and turn e-mail notification on for the threads you want them for.


Also, if you want to subscribe to a thread but don't really have anything to say, you do not have to post to it. I know a lot of people do that. All you have to do is be logged in and open the thread you want to subscribe to. Then click on "Thread tools" up at the top of the thread (right below the page #s). You can subscribe there.


Okay - as I always say, back to the topic at hand . I agree with most people here, including the OP. Very few people have a problem with the activity on the group theads or the non-sense threads. And I think even fewer are jealous. What most of us don't like is having "short-term topic" threads knocked down too quickly by the long-term ongoing threads, and seeing the occasional hijacking of real threads with inside jokes. How long are we going to keep saying that in different ways to each other?

Shouldn't you take your own advice and stop whining? You're basically being a hypocrite for crying foul on people who started a thread against cliques and then you yourself started one for cliques.

Thank goodness someone else noticed this. Read the threads you want to - skip the ones you don't. How hard is that?

It's so silly - what I think many don't realize is there are cliques behind the cliques and curtains....you'll be able to see it when you read up on the "unfair" closing/kept open posts....among other things....and what really trumps one over the other? Because some people are too lazy/don't have enough time to scan a couple pages or are too timid to post?


What are the main complaints:
taking up too much space on the main page
intimidating for new posters
jealousy (call it whatever)

It seems a gang mentality forms whenever specific posters start a thread. Perhaps that is too harsh but it does seem that there are some posters who are truly despised for whatever (real or imagined or historic posts, etc.) reason and thus get "highjacked" more often than not.

Now, I suppose this thread is officially highjacked too.

PS: Just saw Lillygator's reply above - it isn't a few pages. You must scroll back to page 6 to find just today's posts. I went away for the 4th and was gone 3 days; to find posts I might have missed and found interesting I would have to scroll back to page 15. I just don't have that kind of time. Most don't.

I don't think that is such a great example....it seems that posters posts are out there - and now that this thread is hj....someone portraying different personas on different boards, well....never mind.


who really cares what is hj or OT or on page one? Is this the most people have to get their panties in a wad over? The more I read and think about it the more it seems the TR people who wanted all the OT TR's gone have moved over to the CB....what's the big deal?

LOL, it is not that I am too lazy to scan posts. It is just that IMO the board would run more smoothly if there was a sub board. There is obviously enough traffic for it to make sense, IMO.

I do not feel the need to be sheltered from cliques/games/exchanges or anything like that. It's just an annoyance to have to sift through them when a sub forum would make it easier to navigate without having to jump to page two or three (missing what MAY interest me). It is also annoying when threads are hijacked by people who alrready have a hang out and take over threads. I am apparently not alone in that opinion. If the powers that be disagree, so be it. I am not losing sleep over it or wringing my hands. The topic has been brought up and I am just expressing my opinion about it. If that is silly, so be it.

Actually, I was one who inquired about HJ threads and yes, I do remember reading that and then watching as it went way off track....(or off thread)!

I posted earlier today on another "clique" thread. The more I think about it, the more I am offended by that term. All of the groups I am associated with are just that - groups. The word clique has a negative connotation. It's usually a group that excludes other people. I see a clique as unfriendly to outsiders. None of the groups I am associated with fits that pattern.

Yes, some threads are long-winded. But the threads I am part of, we're just friends that enjoy each other's company. Why is that wrong? Just as some don't see why we need to talk to each other regularly, I don't see why we can't? One particular thread has been part of my daily life for several years. There would be a huge hole in my life without these dear friends. Some might say I should get a life. Maybe so. But we're not hurting anyone. Why do you care if we share our day to day ups and downs with cyber friends as well as real life friends?

I wouldn't care if one or more of my group threads moved to another location. I'd post to it there and I could understand the reason behind not clogging page 1. So I don't have a problem with that. I just don't see why so many people want to point the finger at nice people who are not doing anything mean to anyone here.

And I want to go on the record as saying I have never knowingly hijacked a thread. Nor do I know of any of my friends doing this. I think that is very rude. I might once in a while word something in a way that will make a friend smile, but never out of context to the thread.
