I know some people are not big fans of the places where you go and make 8-12 meals, but I really think I could save because we are hugely compulsive shoppers (DH is at the store right now getting onions and bread, but lets see if he comes home with just that). I am worse than he is. Seems like we are going to the store alot lately. Better planning is always a good idea, and maybe a couple of these sessions would give me ideas.

The cost to make 8 meals is 140.00 and 12 meals is 185.00 they say it translates to 2.57 a serving on the 12 meals. Those that do this type of thing, is it reasonable?

I will take all thoughts good and bad!

Go for it! Go check it out and try it. That is the only way to know for certain if it will work for your family. It is just like everything else in life. Some people love it and others hate it.

I wish there was one near me so I could go to it. I can't wait until there is one close enough for me to visit.

Some people in our area get together and split meals and costs. I've never tried it myself but it's supposed to be good!

I've done one of these for close to 2 years now. Obviously - I LOVE this type of meal assistance.

You absolutley should try it out. That's the only way you will find out if it is something that will work for you!

What are these places? I've never heard of them.

I see you are in Wisconsin clh2 - I'm in Milwaukee but don't know of any here. Do you know of any I might not have looked for? I'd love to try this!

I go to Dream Dinners and we love it. It is so very helpful for our busy lifestyle. I know there are people who are super organized and cook once a month and plan their shopping and all, but I am not one of them.
I agree with the others who say, "Try it!" It's so nice knowing that there is always something in the freezer, just ready to be cooked.
Let us know how you like it. If you have any questions, fire away! I feel like a pro now!

I do Super Suppers in our area. We split the entrees since they serve so much and we have a small family and our kids don't eat a lot. So we end up getting 12 meals for $109 or 24 meals for $199. We figured out that when we do the 24 meals, we save approx. $200 a month in our grocery bill. Plus, it is so easy to get dinner ready it leaves more time with the kids! We definitely love it - plus ours has a frequent visitor coupon where you get free stuff for so many times that you come.

i am totaly confused as to how this works. is this a place where you go and pay this fee to put together meals yourself? what does a typical meal consist of (is it only the main dish?). how many servings are in a "meal" (and are they 4 oz that it would take a couple of to satisfy an adult or growing child?

i can think of lots of full meals (chili, stew, meatloaf, familiy fav-pot roast and spagetti) with sides, drinks and desserts that i make (and reap shool/work lunches for a couple of days) that run well under $15.00 (for a family of 4) each.

fill me in-i'm curious :)

They're slightly fancier dinners, you could say. A lot of them have ingredients that you don't use often or you run up the cost of that one meal by having to buy something that you won't use again before it goes bad. Some come with sides and some don't depending on what you pick. Instead of having these dinners every night we mix them up with our cheaper dinners from home (like hot dogs and macaroni, etc...) and try to maximize our savings. We also think since we've started this that we're eating a lot healthier. I've lost ten pounds and my DH has lost about twelve.

Sorry - I didn't answer your other question! When they say serves 6 - that means you get six big pork chops or six filets of fish, so the servings from our place are usually pretty accurate. We have found one or two where it is way over and we have tons of leftovers and we have also found one or two that didn't seem like much. You pick your meals ahead of time and when you get there you go to those stations. There are directions on how to prepare and package them and then you label them with directions on how to cook them. Then you take them all home and freeze them. When we go, my DH and I go together and then go to the stations separately and can get the 24 dinner one done in about an hour.

sounds like a great idea.

i've known co-workers who have done things with friends every other month where they do mass preparations of food items (meatloaf, meatballs, lasagnas, crockpot meals...) and share the cost/prep time. i've always thought it sounded like a great way to save time and money.

So they fix the food and the consumer picks it up? Sounds like an interesting idea. We're vegetarian so these places probably wouldn't know what to do with us, but it sounds like a good idea and something that I would consider if it would work out. I'm having a hard time with meals lately, even though I'm a SAHM.

ONe just opened up here, too, and it's called something like Take and Bake or Make and Take or something like that. DH's co worker went for the first time last week, but haven't heard how it was yet.

We started dong the Schwann's thing and haven't eaten any of it yet. I feel so guilty! It's just been so busy, it's easy to get take out.

Just looked at the websites and they don't make it. I guess if a person doesn't have the kitchen space, doesn't want to mess up their home, or buy the ingredients themself, it might be a good idea. Would also possibly motivate a person to try new foods.

I would love it. I am not a great cook and that way sounds like a no brainer for great food at home.
