This really stinks!

We had to cancel our Disney trip for February. My husband was just told that he would not get his end of the year bonus or paid for unused vacation. Just this year he got 20 dats of vacation. He never uses all of his time and we use it as a little savings plan. In the past he had 15 days and he never used it all. We usually end up with about 8 days pay. This year with 20 days we thought we would have about 13 days of pay left. Not this year! He has to use it or loose it. This stinks!! We hope we will either be able to go Dec. 2011 or Feb. 2012. It has been 3 years this December since we have had a big vacation and we were all looking forward to it. I think I'm the most disappointed because I love the planning process and I've been in planning mode. My boys are old enough to under stand but I just hope my oldest won't be too old to really love Disney the next time. If it plans right for next year they will be 14, 12 and 11. They should still be excited right? Thanks for listening. I'm still going to watching the forum because I can never get to much info on Disney. Also, my parents will be at the fort in about 96 days and I love to give them all the info I find out from you guys.

I get 10 days of vacation every year and it is unpaid vacation. There is no banking or saving or rolling over or cashing in. If I were in a use it or lose it situation for paid vacation, I would use it and not complain.

In fact, considering the state of the economy, there are a lot of people who would love to be in your situation.

That does stink! I guess it is just a matter of deciding what to do with the little time that you have. We use my bonus or overtime as our "Disney" bank. If we dont have it to go, we dont. I sure hope you all get to use your days before they go away. And I think your kids ages will be fine! Look at us! We just make minor adjustments in our shedule every year as our DD's get older to make it age appropriate.

Even if it is not the time of year that you want to go, that's OK. Is there really a "bad" time to go to WDW??

I didn't mean that we were not grateful for the vacation time that we get. In fact I know I didn't say that. I just mean it stinks that we can not use it like we have been able to for many years. This is the only way we can go to Disney and it stinks that this has changed in his company and this has changed our plans. I am sorry you do not get paid for your vacation time.

Thanks, I do agree anytime you get to go to such a magical place like Disney is a good time. Just a little sad now. I just have to think that this is just more "planning time"

I worked for my self for almost ten years and just had to go back to my old job . I use to be able to load up and go now we have reservations in November and I hope I can get the time off. I hope you can get to the Fort soon and don't give up keep up with the Dis, it helps us all get buy the 51 weeks a year we cant be there! See ya there real Soon!

We once had to cancel a Disney trip abruptly, and it was kind of like throwing the car into reverse when you're going 90...I know how you feel!

But as others have said, it'll be there when you're ready. Hope you find something fun, local, and low-cost to do with his days in the meantime.

1) It is too bad.
2) But, most companies have a "use it ior lose it" vacation policy.
3) I wouldn't have it any other way in the companies I used to run.
4) Can't do the annual budget well enough if we paid for unused days.
5) Besides, it encourages employees to NOT take vacation time.
6) And, studies have shown that employees NEED to take vacation.
. . . the body can recoup with a long weekend
. . . the mind usually needs at least a week to really unwind

Know the feeling! Had to cancel our Dec 2010 12 day vacation we reserved a year ago. The "oops" baby changed our plans. Fortunately, we rescheduled for late Jan. but with a 4 month old (which isn't even here yet), a 18 month old and a 6y/o it should be an interesting drive and vacation.

Hope you can get there soon. And I still loved Disney when I was 15. Just never said it out loud...Kinda like kissing you mom bye in front of the school with all your friends around.....not cool!

When at first I read your post, I couldn't help but think about Clark Griswold and the "Jelly of the Month Club". Do you have a Cousin Eddie in your family that you can call upon??

Not to trivialize your sad news but, in the past 6 years I've only taken one week of vacation. When I take vacation I have to work ahead to cover for the time I take off. So in theory - I get no paid vacation. My DH gets no paid vacation time, either.

Life sucks. The End.

Before I retired, I had use or lose leave, and properly scheduled I could build up 60 days before losing began. I was paid for leave only when I left the company. I also had sick leave built up and was paid for that when I retired. It was a good deal and was built into the benefits of working there, and compensated somewhat for lower than expected wages. Different companies have different policies. But the policies should not be changed after you work there for some time and have used those policies in the past. The only exception I could understand is if the company is in danger of going under and must make changes to survive. Best of luck on planning your next Disney outing and try not to get to down over this.

Our company has had to make several "bad economy" moves, including unpaid furloughs. When you equate those moves to jobs saved, it becomes a little more pallitable(sp?). If you take it one step further, it might be your job saved by eliminating paying for benefits that cross fiscal years. It's still not pleasant, but adds perspective.

Our company seems to change things pretty often. Like our sick time. First we got 5 days of sick time per year. Then a couple years later, they did away with sick time. Then a couple years after that, they gave us 10 sick days per year. Every year they change the schedule of earning vacation time based on years of service. When I first started here, you could get five weeks at 7 years. Now it's pushed out to 12 years. We pretty much take nothing for granted as far as paid time off, since it changes so much.
