had never eaten a red velvet cake before now. :) DH's family all live down south and he's been whining for a red velvet cake for years now.

I just made one and it's wonderful! Don't know what I was expecting it to be, but I was surprised it has a chocolate base. :thumbsup2

I have always wanted to try a red velvet cake. care to share the recipe!:flower3:

Glad you had a little taste of the good ol' South! It's by far my favorite cake. But then again, born and raise a Southern girl. :)

Enjoy your cake!

This Northern girl too! I made a heart shaped red velvet cake for Valentines day. I just couldn't get past the color. My husband loves red velvet whoopie pies. One kid liked it the other wouldnt try it.:confused3

I admit it was not made from scratch. Those that do make it from scratch, how doest get its color? Wondering if its natural or food coloring.

Here's the recipe:

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 ounces red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon white vinegar

Grease two 9 inch round pans. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring. Set aside.
Combine the buttermilk, salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Set aside. In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and 1 1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the cocoa mixture. Beat in the buttermilk mixture alternately with the flour, mixing just until incorporated. Stir together baking soda and vinegar, then gently fold into the cake batter.
Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

I iced it with cream cheese frosting!!

Yum!

Lots and lots of red food color.

I liked it, but I'll admit that my favorite is still my grandmother's homemade butter cake with fudge frosting. :lovestruc

DH had red velvet for his grooms cake. Every time I think of it I thiink of that armadillo cake in "Steel Magnolias."

Last St. Patricks Day, Publix had GREEN velvet cakes. That's right, folks. Hunter green cake with cream cheese frosting. I draw the line at green cake. Bleah!

Exactly the reason I resisted the allure of the Red Velvet Cake for several years after moving South!!!

I grew up eating red velvet cake but my mother has always left out the cocoa. She likes it red. So, I do not know anything about the favor of the ones with the chocolate base.

There were red velvet twinkies at my local Publix. They weren't the Twinkies brand, just the shape.

I have to say, they looked vile. :guilty:

I'd eat a green cake before I'd eat a red one. Funny how color can affect our perception.

:rotfl:

I wonder what it says about me that I think, "Ugh" to green cake, but have absolutely no problem with green beer.

My Mom made green mash one year for St. Patrick's Day. Not very appetizing at ALL!

But then... the green cake! LOL.

Green beer? Nope. Nuh uh. NO WAY!

Yeah, you should look at your teeth after you eat red velvet cake. It looks like you've been eating raw meat.

Yeah thats what I was afraid of. I would eat that cake you posted the recipe for w/o the added food coloring! :)

Butter cake with fudge frosting sounds delicious.

For those of us dieting currently (sigh) Yoplait just came out with red velvet cake-flavored light yogurt. I was excited as hell to hear that because RVC is by far my favorite dessert EVER. The grocery store near me makes red velvet cupcakes that are to die for. Their red velvet cake itself is pretty good, too, but I'd seriously kill for those cupcakes. I think it's because the frosting-to-cake ratio is so much more awesome with the cupcakes.
