...does anyone else think that Space Mountain needs to be gutted and a real roller coaster put in?

I rode this for the first time back in 1978. Certainly cutting edge at that time. I rode for the second time last week. What a let down! It's not even dark enough to not see the track ahead of you. So glad I had a strategy to avoid a line. State of the art is Mummy and RnR for indoor coasters. So, for a signature ride--this one is in desparate need of a makeover. Keep the space theme for sure. Just turn it into a ride. :wizard:

I don't know about SM at WDW. The one at DL has been redone at least twice. It just reopened (in May I think) from the last reworking. And even before it was redone, I liked it better than the MK version. It's so smooth, you really feel like you are flying. The front seat let's you feel how you cut through the air; the back seat gives you the "crack the whip" effect.

I agree to a point. It needs a major re-hab but not a total replacement. I would like to see them do what they did at DL. Their version of SM is awesome; it does not even compare to the one in Florida!

You haven't been to the new Space Mountain at DLR. It's wonderful. They made the ride darker, and they put in new tracks and cars all together. It's a smooth and fast ride. You would love it.

I hope that they eventually redo Space Mountain so it's like the one in Disneyland. That is a great, fun, thrilling ride. Really fast.

I just hope they make the cars more comfortable. I thought I was getting old because I felt so awkward getting out of the car. Then I saw teenage boy in front of me stumbling out of the car too. It's like getting off of the floor with your legs spread or something. :rotfl:

Believe it or not, SM consistantly rates as one of the best attractions at WDW among guests. Personally I would love to see it rehabbed or completly re-done, but as long as "John and Suzie Smith" from Wisconsin still rate it as high as they do, I doubt any cash will be spent to improve it.

From my adult perspective, I'd also like to see it re-done and updated...but, from my god-daughter's 9 year old perspective, it was PERFECT. Disney is a kids park, and this coaster allows the smaller kids to go on a thrill ride. Some of the kids aren't ready for RRC, and Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad work for them, KWIM? Even Everest might be too much for the more timid youngsters. Just a thought... :)

NO! If I want to ride something more like RNR, I'll go ride RNR. I like the *tween* coasters--I think it's hard for kids to go from Goofy's barnstormer to RNR.

You may have ridden Space Mountain a zillion times and now it's boring, but my kids are riding it for the first time next month. I'm sure they won't find it dated or boring.

Not trying to sound rude, I just like the ride the way it is.

I think a rehab is in order and with two tracks they could do one side at a time. :thumbsup2

I guess it could use an update but everytime I get off it I have a hugh smile.

It Needs To Be Updated for Sure, I also agree, the ride Vehicles are weird.
With all the new ride technology this attraction would be awesome! ::MinnieMo ::MickeyMo

Nope , leave it...MK is a Fantasy park not a thrill park...If I want thrill coasters I will go to Cedar Point...If I want pure fun and fantasy....MK!!

According to a CM at Splash Mountain last year, MK's Splash Mountain is suppose to be the next major ride rehab. I hope so.

The best scenerio would be to keep one track classic and one track with the updated technology. That way everybody would be happy.

I say no, only because it is one of the many "Disney things" that made me fall in love with the place on my first visit many years ago. I just don't want to those that piece of the magic.

As long as they don't take away the Chips Ahoy cookie "asteroids" floating by in the ride queue...I get a kick out of those! :teeth:

I agree, actually. The only thing is that the time when it is shut down would stink.

I'm still irritated that I've been to Disneyland three times and have never yet been there at a time Space Mountain is open!!

I read (I think it was in the Imagineers' Field Guide) that this is an urban legend, and the asteroids weren't modeled after/pictures of/whatever chocolate chip cookies.

Oh, I'm sure it's a coincidence, but they really do bear an uncanny resemblance... :) I'm still going to call them cookies.
