This just doesn't seem right to me

The Indianapolis noon news just ran a story about Sept. 11th observances and they talked about Indianapolis' plans. The mayor announced that they will have a Sept 11 Community Fair, including many, many community/volunteer services. They hope to rekindle the charitable donations and volunteers that have dropped off during this past year.

I always think of remembrances and memorials to be just that--focused on the event and people. I just seems odd to me that the first anniversary of such a horrific attack would be mixed with local charities & volunteerism. Yes, I know that we all have learned that we need to help each other and pull together as a country, but this didn't seem right.

Any other Hoosiers out there that have heard about this? Did I get the wrong picture? Am I missing something?

I believe that this community fair is in addition to/following the solemn memorial service planned for earlier that morning.

At least that's what I heard on the news last night.

Actually, I think it's a pretty good idea. I think there will be a lot of people feeling "helpless" on 9/11. Providing them with an avenue to donate money and/or time to charities that help others may be a good way to lift some spirits (and the operating budgets of all of the agencies who didn't hit their targets when everyone donated to the 9/11 charities instead...)

I have heard of other communities that are also doing a type of celebration instead of a more traditional memorial. The thought being that we should celebrate the good things we have and the freedoms we enjoy.

Oh, I see you point now. I guess I was being too short-sighted.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!
