This just doesn't seem necessary....

I can understand that, but personally I would feel bad if I found out that my need to escape my family was preventing someone else from being with their's. That's all I'm saying.

My DH works this Thanksgiving (at a hospital)and he was originally scheduled to be off. He volunteered to work from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. cause we need the money. We'll just have dinner when he gets home.
So as I said, I understand those who volunteer. I just feel sorry for those who want to be home and can't because their store has decided to stay open. I like to shop and go to the movies as much as the next guy, but I could do without it for one day if I had to.

You make a good point. I do hope that the stores that are open can either be staffed by folks who volunteered for the day or at least scheduled in shifts so that no one has to miss the whole celebration. I would feel very bad for someone who was stuck working and desperately wanted to be home with their family.

I know, right?

Then again...There are always those who just feel the need to run out of the house every holiday and drive straight to the nearest dollar tree for all of their one-dollar needs that couldn't POSSIBLY wait until the next morning.

Somehow, this doesn't surprise me. :confused3 :rotfl:

Actually EDS was way worse than "strange", but if I used words to more accurately describe the company and its business practices I would get banned for sure!

Several years ago I was a video store clerk, and the store I worked in (not a big chain like Blockbuster, just a small-town individually-owned store) was open on Christmas Day. Since I was the newest employee I had to work Christmas Day that year. I hated being away from my family, and I only had a handful of customers all day. It certainly wasn't enough to pay my wages for the day, or the electricity bill, etc. I don't think places like that should be open on major holidays.

I used to go to the movies on Christmas Day every year. I loved it. Of course, I don't work there though. ;)

my dh worked thanksgiving when we first married for several years. He worked in computers for a hospital. He is at a different hospital and gets off now.

I don't understand why people feel they need to shop on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter etc... What could you possibly need on that day, that you couldn't buy either the day before or after? Maybe it's because I've worked retail for the last 17 years...but I can find alot of things to do on a holiday that does not include a trip to the mall. I can shop any old time. I'd rather have the day off.

I work for a passenger railroad and for my first TEN years there I had to work July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas eve, christmas day, new years eve and new years day since all the senior people took off and all the Junior people got stuck working since its a 365 day a year 24 hour a day business! Sure I got double time and a half but it would have been nice to have just one of those off on year! Now that I have seniority its ME that gets all the holidays off..I do feel bad for the guy that get stuck working that have little kids at home and they don't get to see them open their gifts etc....But I do like shopping on Thanksgiving!

I am someone who would shop on Thanksgiving - I don't enjoy the holiday, I see my family frequently throughout the year, and could arbitrarily choose any day to have them come and stay with me and have a big dinner. It would mean exactly the same to me as Thanksgiving day.

And I certainly won't feel guilty that my shopping trip is ruining someone's holiday. I doubt all the stores in my area are staying open just for me!

The Dollar Store being open between 9 -3 doesn't seem outrageous to me. Unless you are cooking the meal, you don't need to be at home all day. And if your family won't wait to eat until you get off work, that's not really keeping with the Thanksgiving spirit is it?

Because I know that at 12 noon on thanksgiving, I will DEFINITLY be needing to hit up the Dollar Store, for some figurine of a sad clown, that wasnt even painted that well.

Jeez. Yeah, grocery stores.. at least one should be open. But the Dollar Store? Unncessesary. Let those people off of work. for cripes sake!

I used to work for a chain called Silo. Like a low budget Best Buy or CC. I refused to work on Thanksgiving and they said they would fire me. I told then to go ahead and fire me, but they wouldn't dagnabbit! :rotfl2:

If the employees break it into smaller shifts (say four hours) they can usually work out a way to still have a meal with their families.

Also I must confess, after Thanksgiving Dinner shopping is one thing my mom and my sister like to do. Its become a tradition. We leave the dishes and the football games on TV to the men and we're outta there for a few hours to walk around and shop.

I think that's a store that doesn't need to be open on a holiday. Come on, who runs to the $1 on Thanksgiving...unless you don't celebrate holidays of course, but I still think they'll be pretty empty.

I on the other hand have had to work the past two years on ALL the holidays, we are a residential facility and have to be open...
