This Jersey Girl pumped her own gas today!!

Oregon girl here.

I've yet to pump my own gas nor do I ever want to.

If I move out of state, I'm moving to NJ.

A friend of mine from Oregon was visiting family here in California and borrowed her brother's car. She's not a "purse" gal, just stuffs everything into an overstuffed clutch/wallet. Sure enough, she laid her wallet on top of the car after paying for the gas & while she was pumping and drove off with her wallet still on top of the car. Needless to say, she lost the wallet and everything in it! She was just so unused to the idea of pumping her own gas - she was totally out of her element.

I can't imagine having someone else pump my gas. Although, it would probably employ a few more people at each station.

Soooo... stupid question.

I needed to put air in my tire yesterday. Do you do that yourself in NJ and Oregon or does the attendant also do that?

Whatever people prefer is fine by me... but I would not like having someone else pump my gas for me. I hate having someone else do something I can do myself.

Then again, I also scan and bag my own groceries and hate going to stores that don't have that option.

We put the air in our tires.

Wasn't there a long thread on pumping gas just a month or so ago?

Add me to the list of those that just don't see what the big deal is. For those of you in NJ and OR, I think it is great that you don't have to pump your own gas. I realized this about NJ when I once got out to fill up my car and was told very loudly to get back in my car. Really it was not a pleasant experience. I made an honest (and probably common) mistake, and I just wish I had been informed of the law in a nicer way. The second time I did wait in my car -- and waited, and waited, and waited. That has been my limited experience with the whole thing.

Now, I don't like or dislike pumping my own gas. It is just something I do. If dh is with me, he will do it, but it isn't his job or anything. He travels a lot and often isn't with us when I need to fill up, and my girls and I travel quite a bit w/o him, so yeah, it often falls to me to do.

Funny, I was just thinking today how proud I was that I didn't hurt myself while brushing my teeth. I felt silly to be proud of something so simple but this thread has made me feel better about it.

:rotfl:

Agreed. I changed my own oil this weekend, I think I deserve some kind of award. :yay:

I've been going to the same station for years they will check and put air in my tires if needed. They will check the oil and clean the windshield every time I go in. I also have an account they send me a bill once a month for all my gas. Not too many stations do this anymore. I don't think in the last 15 years anyother station has cleaned my windshield but that used to be standard.
You're the opposite of me I hate to scan my purchases in any store forget about the grocery store. Thank goodness mine does not have that option. Unless a store wants to give a discount for doing their job I don't understand why customers want to do their own.
I guess I like to get the service I'm paying for.

Here in Texas we pump our own gas. When I was a kid you could go to stations with Full service and have someone pump it for you or you could do seff serve and do it yourself. But the full serve places are long gone, atleast around where I live.

Same here. I couldn't tell you when the last time I saw a station with a full-service option available was.

I prefer to pump my own gas. It is faster and I hate it when the person takes your CC and then goes out of your view. I don't trust them. The ones that just put it into the pump don't bother me.

One of the stations I passed today was $2.35. Right in my area it is about $2.40.

Maybe I can be a Jersey Girl transplant. I am thinking my Texas accent might make me feel a little out of place, but I would love to have someone pump my gas all the time!:goodvibes

You will be hard pressed to find an attendant here. Their are no gas stations that have attendants here. It sure does suck pumping at 40 below. Someone pumping for me sure would be nice:thumbsup2

I do remember my Mom getting hers pumped when I was a kid. That was 35-40 years ago though:rolleyes1

Gas in Jersey is around the cheapest in the US, its a good thing cause our taxes are so high, and everything is taxed!

I too am a Jersery "girl" and I've yet to pump my own gas. Hubby does it when we take road trips and its not an experience I'm worried about missing. On the few occcassions I traveled without Hubby, I always make sure I fill up before crossing the border!

My confusion isn't that there is a law forbidding you to pump your own gas. Ok, that isn't really true, that is a bit confusing but the supject of a different thread. My confusion is that it is such as simple task that requires less cognitive ability of tying a shoe. It isn't like you came down to Earth and never saw a car or gas station before. You have seen the attendant do it. To attach pride to the accomplishment, and then post about it to the world, seems odd.

It also seems odd that so many people haven't traveled far enough by them selves to necessitate pumping of gas in a state other then their own. It took about a month after graduating H.S. for me to do a multi state drive. It seems kind of needy to have traveled out of state and always made someone else pump you gas or planned the travel around which state you will be getting gas in. The whole thing is very odd from that perspective.

Did you consider that the OP may be a very young person? I went to college in my home state, so it was quite a while that I was driving out of state regularly.

I can't believe how people are being such jerks about this.

It's like the southerners complaining or being proud of shoveling snow. Any moron can do that, should we mock them?

We'd love to have you! And especially when the weather is nasty (which it has been all winter), it is a wonderful thing!

I reserve pride for much bigger accomplishments..working and paying my way through college, running a marathon, stuff that requires years of work or above average effort.
