This is Us- Season four

Did they show scenes from the next episode at the end? I watch on Hulu, so I don't get previews.

I loved this episode. I thought it was a brilliant way to start the new season. It brought back a lot of the "Oooh, what's happening?" "Who are these people?" "How does this puzzle fit together?" "What time are we even in??" type questions that we all had back in season one during the very first episode.

Now, granted, I saw the trailer for this episode, so I knew going in that we were going to be meeting a mess of new people at once, and I was prepared for that.

I liked seeing a bit more Jack & Rebecca early days. Dang, that dad of Rebecca's is a jerk!! Loved seeing Jack meet Miguel. It will be interesting to see how that relationship progresses as well.

As always, love how little things matter...the broken plate mattered in a life changing, but thankfully good way, just like that forsaken Crock Pot mattered in a life changing, but horrible way.

I picked up on who Jack right when we saw Kate & Toby in the dr's office with the baby, but was surprised that grown jack's story line was in the future, as I hadn't realized that until I figured out who he was. (I noticed the nude scene, and while not bothered by it, also wasn't really impressed that they threw in a nude scene just to have one there, as it didn't have any reason to be there. )

In the opposite fashion I was also surprised when I realized that Malik's story line was current as opposed to being in the past. :) And I was definitely surprised when the baby turned out to be his. Him & Deja together should be very interesting. It was nice seeing Randall and family moving into the new house and Deja smiling and happy. :)

I don't think we're really supposed to like Cassidy yet. I think that's because she's purposely been left as the unsolved puzzle right now. We know she either has a link to Nicky or will have one, and let's face it, poor Nicky is a bit of a hot mess on a good day, so I think they are definitely trying to show a parallel between how his past affects him and how hers affects her. I think she'll definitely be the new person who has a link to Kevin, just because of Nicky, but that it doesn't mean she's going to be Kevin's wife or Nicky's daughter. I'm willing to sit back and wait on her---both on how I feel about her and in what I think her ultimate link to the Pearsons will be. :)

Long, long story short, loved the episode. I look forward to the fact that the big three all have changes in their lives which means new things for them to do and new characters for us to get to know.

I know someone said that the Deja scene was present day, and I only watched it once (so I may not be remembering things correctly), but didn’t one of Malik’s friends mention how well he cooked. Like didn’t they say he was going to be cooking for the bbq. (I think Malik’s dad said something about he knows how they always go to these BBQs) So that’s why I thought that the bbq scene could be “sort of” present day, like maybe a year ago.....so maybe that’s not the present day bbq that he was planning to go to but a prior one, where Deja and Malik first met....and maybe that is Deja and Malik’s baby 👀😳.

His dad talked about watching the baby so Malik could go to the BBQ, so that doesn't fit.

I've watched this episode twice now and enjoyed it so much more the second time, mostly because I was no longer frustrated by wondering 1) what on earth the writers had done with this show and 2) where were the Big 3? It ended up being a great episode, IMO, and I could kick myself for not trusting the writers on the first viewing. I love adult Jack and Lucy. I hope Deja and Malik will be good for each other. What a great actor that kid is! And, of course I think Deja's actress is wonderful. It should be fun to watch those two play off of each other. Still wondering about Cassidy and whether she will play a bigger role in Nicky's or Kevin's life. Thanks to this brief glimpse into her character, I am already better understanding my brother's PTSD and how difficult the transition back to civilian life has been. Jennifer Morrison is doing a very good job showing what this is like for our vets. It's kind of neat to see the writers juxtapose someone who makes a clear decision to seek help alongside Nicky who has struggled for so many years. It makes me wonder if this will be an easier road for Cassidy, or will she, too, struggle with the back and forth of wanting help and rejecting help. In my experience, the push and pull is much more realistic, but then I've only seen that side of it.

Looking forward to the rest of the season.

I don’t think I explained that very well. We know how they like to jump all over the place with time. I feel like these BBQs are something that happen often (hence Malik’s friend telling him that he’s on the grill - everyone knows he’s a good cook because there have been many BBQs already). So the BBQ that his dad was referring to was definitely after the baby was born. But the BBQ where Malik meets Deja was actually a year or two prior to that, and they eventually end up together....producing this baby.

Are you thinking all the baby stuff is in the future? Deja could not have met him in the past, because they just moved there.

While I see your thought process, I cannot imagine that Deja and family would allow sole custody to be given to her baby’s father. There was no mention of mother or other family. I know we often see just snippets and have to wait to get a full story, but Malik’s story during episode certainly seems to be within a few days. He and his parents seem to be the baby’s full time guardians.

I’m just speculating that they are jumping all around with the time period. Like the scene where he’s with the baby could have been a couple of years after the scene where they met. They didn’t necessarily have to be that same day. We know how this show skips around a lot and makes us think one thing but it’s another. Just a thought.

Wasn't he wearing the same clothes? And was looking at his phone, presumably staring at the baby on video when he said something about "wouldn't you if she was your girl".

Yes, I remember him sitting at the park with his friends. They were talking about school starting and the bbq. They told Malik to stop looking at his phone and he said, "you would stare at her too if she was yours." Obviously we think he is talking about a girlfriend, but then we see him adjusting the camera over the babies crib so we know he was looking at the baby. I think the person suggesting the baby is Deja's is thinking that all the scenes we saw of Malik, his parents, working at the garage, the baby etc. are current time. The very last scene we see of Malik cooking burgers and talking to Deja is about a year in the past (as well as the scene of Randall asking Deja what was wrong with her face). This would indicate he met Deja at the bbq (a different bbq than the one they talk about in the current timeline), then they got pregnant. I am not 100% convinced the baby is not Dejas.

Thank you so much for understanding what I was saying (and explaining it much better than I did).
