The resident that I am supervising this year has spent the past 10 years of his life (in addition to finishing school) as a combat photographer. He loves photography and is a Nikon guy. He is truly a pro and could teach me amazing things. He knows as much about photography as I know about treating patients.
He has offered me the use of all the lenses I'd love to play with: the 12-24, the 300 mm 2.8. I'm dying to take him up on his offer to go out shooting with him. But I am his supevisor. And I can't blur the boundaries--not a bit. Can't borrrow his gear, can't socialize outside the office. Wish I would have pawned him off to another supervisor at the start of his residency. Darn those professional ethics. Aaaaaaaaargh!

Residency's don't last forever. Think of the bond that the two of you are forming now. Eventually, if it's a good fit for both of you, you can form a friendship, first on a professional level when he is no longer a resident, then on a personal level with the photography.

I'd let him know that you would love to take him up on his offer but at this time ethics and professional boundaries prevent you from doing so. Let him know of your respect for him and his gracious offer. This way he is aware of why you are behaving in a specific manner regarding a passion you both share.

Life brings people together and then drifts them apart. Be the best that you can be for him by doing the right thing and he will appreciate your efforts and restraint even more.

More than likely you will encounter each other in the future. You Docs tend to swim in the same professional ponds.....

If it's meant to be in the future then it's meant to be..... just let him know what you are thinking.

Good luck!

When you ARE able to take him up on his offer, bring a friend. (wink, wink)
