This is going to sound really strange

We have a new puppy who wakes every 3 hours on the dot to go potty. Last night, after her 2nd potty break, I was back in bed waiting to fall back to sleep.

Out of the blue, I clearly heard a male voice say my name loudly. It was not a voice that I recognized. Husband, from whom I am officially separated, but comes to see the kids on weekends, was sound asleep, snoring. So I know it wasn't him.

Then I heard it a second time, even louder. And then that was it. I didn't hear it again, but it shook me up enough to keep me awake for at least 15 minutes.

Has anyone ever had an experience like this? I'm not claiming anything supernatural, or religious, just kind of confused. It definitely was not a dream, as 1) dream voices have a different quality; and 2) I was wide awake trying to fall asleep.

All I heard was my name, twice. Weird. I know this sounds totally bizzaro, but more than anything I wanted to write about it.

Has anyone ever experienced something similar?

*whistles theme from The Twilight Zone*

Yes that is strange. Is it possible you were having what I term a waking dream? I occasionally have them and in them I am aware of my surroundings...my bedroom...but I hear voices or see people yet I am asleep. Does that make sense? I once had one where two people were arguing at the foot of my bed and one turned to me and asked me to leave the room. So I did...and slept on the couch the rest of the night.

I've had that happen a few times...usually I recognize the voice though. I've had it happen where I have SWORN I heard my mother's voice (she is still alive so it's not a "supernatural" thing).

Auditory memory or something...who knows????????:confused3

Yes, I've had that happen to me a few times, the voice can be either male or female, sometimes I've recognized it other times not. DH has also had it happen but he says it's always either been his mother's voice or mine. And always just calling our name. I have no real explanation for the occurrence though. I always just think it is a short circuit in the synapses of the brain, or something like that.

Or it could be Who's calling.:lmao:

Weird! I've had that happen once. I was in high school in bed trying to fall asleep. All of a sudden I became paralyzed and couldn't move. Then I heard this really loud laughing inside my head. I couldn't scream or get up or anything. All I could do was pray over and over again to make it stop. Finally it ended and I jumped out of bed. I got in my car and drove around for a while. I had trouble sleeping in that room until I went to college!

I thought it was something spiritual (could have been) but since I've read about dreaming while you're awake I realize it could have been that, too. I don't know.:confused3All I know is it freaked me out! I hope you don't have anymore episodes!

Yes, I have. And if you think that sounds strange, let me tell you this...

One evening I was getting in bed (single at that time), sat down on the edge and was getting ready to lie down when I heard, "Eden, it's time you met Katherine."

It was a male's voice and it was as clear as day. Scared the crap out of me.

No, I'm not crazy or delusional. I really don't know what it was. And though I've met several Katherines in my life, none really stand out as being important.

OMG! I had that happen to me in college too but I thought I had a stroke because I never heard of it happening to anyone else before. I was studying and I rolled over to shift myself and my whole body locked up, I was paralyzed, couldn't speak although I was trying to scream & I couldn't see but I could hear my mother in the next room putting laundry away. I have to say I did have many other weird experiences in that room.... well in that house and not just me but other people including guests. For a while I thought I was going crazy but it's been 20 years and I never got sick so I guess that wasn't it.... who knows. Nothing ever happened to me after I left that house but I'd still like to know what on earth happened that day when I totally locked up. Whatever it was I am glad someone else has experienced it. What a trip right?

As for the voice mine is always very soft and gentle and female, I don't think I am special enough to receive anything from above so I think it's my subconscious trying to be heard. I've heard it a few times, but only when something very serious is going on or a serious decision has to be made. The first time was when a very DF of mine was trying to kill himself. The voice told me to call him because he was doing it and when I called his brother found him on the floor of his room and saved his life. The second was when I was 16 dating DH's BFF and we were leaving DH's house and I heard it say, "You will spend your life with him"... not meaning BF at the time but very plainly my current DH. I ignored it until DH came into my life again at 20. The third time was when I was dating a guy just before DH, this guy wanted to marry me but there were troubles. I remember sitting in a party with him and the voice said, very clearly, "You do not belong here". Forth time was a warning about someone hurting one of my kids and it was about 5 years ago. Needless to say, if the idea is important enough for my brain to process it like that I heed the warnings.

In your case, maybe it's your subconscious trying to remind you that you have a little friend you now need to take care of even at night.

My mother hears things like that a lot, and always has. She's not crazy. She sees things, too. To this day she's still "surprised" every time it happens. :rotfl: She's never really tried to explore it more (like I would have if I had it happen as much as she does) but she does believe that somehow it has meaning (though hasn't figured out what yet, lol).

You're not crazy. If you're open to it, you may find it happening more.

I don't think you are crazy. I've heard voices before, and sometimes they are telling me to do something, or make a certain decision. I always wake my husband up and ask if he heard anything, and he always says no. It really freaks me out!

Also, a couple nights ago, I was woken up from a sound sleep with what I thought was knocking on my bedroom door. I thought one of my kids was sick or something, so I yelled "Come in". No one came in so I got up and opened the door. No one was there, and all my kids were asleep. I was 100% positive that someone was knocking, but again, my husband heard nothing (and he's a very light sleeper!). I guess it is just one of those unexplainable phenomenons.

One other thing that my husband CAN substantiate though, is that the night before the earthquake in Haiti I woke up in the middle of the night and told my husband I had a very vivid dream about an earthquake. The next day the one in Haiti happened and it has freaked both my husband and myself out ever since.

You should look up "Exploding Head Syndrome". It's when you hear stuff in that twilight period between wake and sleep. Usually it's a sound like a gunshot or an explosion, but I've also heard my name.

Totally fascinating, and it's fun to tell people you have Exploding Head Syndrome.... just for the shock value!

These are great stories! Keep 'em coming, I don't feel so crazy now. :goodvibes
OK. This is something recent. My mother sees "flashes" of her sister and lifelong best friend, who passed away two years ago. We learned that we can sometimes tell what's going on with my cousin (her son) based on the flashes. One time my mother reported seeing her sister "mad", ie shaking her fist in anger. I checked in with my cousin and found out that he had someone staying in his house that was doing some things there that were unsavory. A few weeks ago she appeared in a bathrobe and slippers (when usually she's dressed up) and we figured it had something to do with her being "home". Turns out my cousin had just finished some renovations in the house. :rotfl2:

This knocking thing reminded me of another one. Many years back I was up in New Hampshire babysitting my freinds' children so she and her husband could go away for the weekend. The kids were probably 12, 7 & 5. Her father came with me, but he was quite hard of hearing, so she was afraid to have him watch the kids alone because she was afraid he wouldn't hear them if something happened. So I went too.

She lived in a new house in a small town and the house was situated on top of a high hill/short mountain, so a bit remote. Nice safe area though, so that didn't concern me.

So we're all there...me, friend's father, the 3 kids, the German Shepherd. There was a knock at the door. We all heard it, even my friend's hard of hearing father. The dog jumped up and ran to the door. I will admit that I was a bit...concerned...because, as I said her house was fairly remote and it was a long schlep up the hill for someone, and we weren't expecting anyone. Opened the door...no one there. The dog is all excited, the kids are being nosey, Dad is yelling "who is it???", and there's no one. And it was definitely a knock...3 raps right in a row, so it wasn't a falling branch hitting the door or anything like that. I leashed the dog and we walked the property a bit, but we didn' see anything, the dog didn't react to anything, and she was a fairly protective dog, as German Shepherds tend to be.

It was weird...

I'd say it's pretty common. I've heard of psychologists asking if you've ever heard your name when no one was around as a gauge to see how truthful you are willing to be with them. As for a cause, I have no idea.

I had something similar happen and DH told me -- even though you thought you were awake you were asleep. All I could think of is 'oh no I wasn't -- I was FULLY aware of what was going on' That was at least 18 years ago but I can remember it like it just happened & I tend to forget what I did 5 minutes ago.

I was sleeping, woke up and could NOT move, it was the scariest feeling, then I went to say something and literally no voice or anything. I immediately thought this is how people in comas must feel, fully aware but can't get others to know that. I literally just forced myself to scream which took all my effort & nothing came out until finally my voice squeaked (even though in my head I was attempting to scream at full force) and then I was able to move and things were back to normal. It freaked me out. I told DH about it as it was early on in our marriage and he just went "oh you were sleeping even though you thought you were awake" -- I was thinking you are an idiot, I was NOT sleeping...I do NOT sleep and remember things like that nor feel fully awake and know where I'm at, etc...

Thankfully it has never happened since but it still freaks me totally out to this day.

What if you say no & you really haven't ever heard your name when no one is around? Do you think you are lying? :confused3 I've had weird experiences but never heard my name when no one else was around.

OMG! This happened to me several weeks ago for the second time.

Both times I was sound asleep. Someone (male I didn't recognize) just said, "Lori". Not in a menacing way or shouting or anything, but firm.

I immediately woke up. Opened my eyes and laid very still (no paralysis or anything like that) waiting to see if it was going to happen again. Nope. Both times it was just my name once.

Needless to say, it took me quite a while to go back to sleep. All I can think of is the bible story where God is calling Samuel. I just wonder.....though I'm too scared to say "it's me God, what do you want?"
