I was told this weekend "No tripods at Universal". I went to Guest Services b/c I was sure this was just a security guarding "guarding" too much. Nope. They printed out a screen for me from their website. I saw no mention of tripods. He assured me it was there. I said politely, "can you point to it for me?". He pointed to the word weapons. Huh?!? I realize a tripod could be swung like a weapon as could a stroller, but huH??!!??

Can someone help me understand?

i guess if you want to go into the park, you'll have to leave your tripod weapon in your car..........

Ya, I wouldn't think it would be any worse than an umbrella. Go figure.

Sounds silly to me. :rolleyes1

WOW! Lots of people use tripods to get good night shots. I wonder if a mini tripod would be acceptable?

I have a mini tripod that is only about 3 inches tall. It works great for night shots and that is exactly why I purchased it.

A tripod? Seems silly. Goodness knows I have brought in my umbrella with the pointy tip and carried it pointing behind me on Main Street at Disney. Amazing how the stroller nazis stay away from your ankles. I've never had anything at Universal questioned by security, but once at WDW DH was told he couldn't bring his "brass knuckles" in. Turns out the guard was referring to his metal keychain in the shape of Mickey's head...the dude really thought it was brass knuckles! DH pointed out it could be purchased right in the parks. We're still scratching our heads over that one.

Not to ruffle feathers, but those that want to ride dragons and take thier cam-corder with them, i consider armed and dangerous if they are sitting in front of me.:cool2:

I think you may have seen Final Destination one too many times, hee hee.

You know what I would do? I would use Ace bandages and attach it to my leg to simulate a brace. ;)

I have always though that these bag checks were ridiculous. You'll probably keep glass containers out of the park and I am sure they have found a fair number of weapons/forbidden items but...

They just check the bags. You can put whatever you want in your pockets/on your person and you are home free.

Pepper spray on your key chain... no problem if you put your keys in a coat or pants pocket.

Brass knucles are fine as long as they are not in your camera bag.

There were a couple of chilly morning when we were there in Feb where we had our coats on. They just checked the camera bag and fanny pack.

It is not a weapon. I was told it was because it can be a safety hazard, meaning others can trip over it. (Same reason you can't bring lawn chairs.) Normally, it isn't enforced unless the parks are very crowded or at night. During Mardi Gras and HHN, they are very strict about not allowing in tripods.

No kidding. I was told umbrella (actually large umbrella's were banned too as a weapon). I am not joking.

Of course I asked what a large umbrella was and got a blank stare.

I originally thought it was an overzealous security guard. So I went to Guest Relations b/c I really wanted some good pics of Bare Naked Ladies (Yes during Mardi Gras). The guy working said of course Tripods are allowed. I told my story so he called "The Head of Security" or so he claimed, who then said "Of course Tripods are allowed". I then, told my story, and he then called someone else and then told me they were weapons, printed the screen out for me and underlined weapons.

In my attempt to be funny, I said some people consider my hands weapons (it was taken as a joke as the guy and I were joking about how silly this all was) and he said, "Be careful, they might make you keep those in the car" :scared1:

He was cracking me up, but just bad. I love taking photos in the parks. Heck, it is about 42% of the reason why I have passes to ALL the Orlando Parks. Universal is killing me, that's all I can say.

Large umbrellas are listed on the website as forbidden but not listed under weapons. See: http://www.universalorlando.com/hours-information/theme-park-services/policies-and-restrictions.html

The large umbrellas they are talking about are the kind you sit under at the beach or swimming pool. Honestly, most of the time you should be able to bring in a tripod just not for Mardi Gras or HHN. It's just too dark and too crowded.

I would have loved to have been behind you in line when you asked this! :lmao:

That's just stupid. You can trip over just about anything. Strollers, benches, your own feet, the stairs you go up on many attractions. . . .

I was told something happened where people starting throwing tripods. Certaintly, this has to be a lie....right?
