Seriously though, most airlines do state that the card used for purchase must be presented when you check in for your flight but I've never been asked. Not once, and I fly a lot.
As a student and beyond I had parents paying for my air travel. As were most other college and grad school students I knew. The airlines know that people often have other people paying for their tickets. I started flying on my own at 18, and I've never once needed to show anyone a CC at checkin counter.
Even now, I generally book airfare with the CC in DH's name, even when he's not flying with us. We have different last names and it's never once been a problem.
Since 9/11, buying air tickets with a "third-party" credit or debit card can flag you for extra security screening, but it won't cause any problems otherwise.
I routinely pay for my dh and dd's flights with my card. The only time you really have to have it is if you want to check in at one of the kiosks at the airport. other than that it's not an issue.

My daughter recently a problem with this on an international flight to Singapore. My wife had paid for the tickets with our card. In London she was denied a boarding pass to her connecting flight until we emailed an affidavit she had permission to use our card.
My married daughter (so different last name) bought my airline tickets for our trip to Disneyland - she lives in Houston and was flying to California from there and I live near Chicago and flying to California from here. I had no problem with security.
