I just spent a few minutes browsing the Nikon forum over at one of the review sites. If you've spent any time there, you'll know which one I'm talking about. There is a lot of needless vitriol and name calling "over there", which just served to remind me how pleasant it is on *this* forum. We all have our own prejudices about equipment, technique, blah, blah, blah, but advice is most always given in a helpful, courteous manner.

I guess it's appropriate that a forum dedicated to photographing "The Happiest Place On Earth" should be a happy place, as well.

Kudos to all of you who make it so.

I completely agree. I visit that other site when I am looking for specific information, but even their more calm forums have a few bad apples. I also like Steve's, but some of the same bad apples are there with the same screen names as the other place.

I simply can't imagine what Darned Photography forum you could be talking about. ;)

I agree, I came for the Disney talk and stayed for the pleasant atmosphere. I try to conduct myself pretty fairly too and when straying into the "hot button" stuff like equipment choices, try to be fair and courteous.

Now if only they could speed it up (I didn't see much improvement from the big touted upgrade of a few months ago and it now seems as slow as ever) and get Search working again... ;)

Well, I've never gone to any other sites (I think I maybe checked the Canon site once or twice) mainly because I don't know all that much about photography beyond understanding how changing aperture and shutter speed and ISO can affect your photos. I want to take photos for FUN, to save special moments/places/events.

But I do want my photos to look good, and you guys on this forum are wonderful! I'm sure on some of the "snotty" forums, if anyone would dare to post a question about their point-and-shoot camera, they'd probably be called all kinds of names. But you "knowledgeable" folks here on the DIS are kind, offering suggestions to everybody, whether they're got the most expensive digital SLR or a little PNS that fits into your pocket.

I've learned so much from you all, and I've seen an improvement in my photos just from the year or so I've been hanging out here. :thanks: :disrocks:

Biggest reason why I stick around on this particular board. There are more than a lot of great people here. I've learned so much being here and my photography has improved greatly in the last year and a half or so. Unfortunately (or not) my wallet has also been hit hard,, :teeth: Way to many good equipment suggestions!

Its a great place to hang out and see what are fellow Dis photo nuts (who are actually more like friends) are up to with their photo taking.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Thanks for hangin' around.

That's the stupidest piece of @#$% I've ever seen, you total moron. Oh wait, wrong forum. Sorry.

Some of the other sites are downright scary!! :scared1: This one is great. I've learned so much from all of you, even though I'm more of a lurker than a poster.

Thanks for all of the great advice and suggestions. You guys really are the best!!

We recently had this type of discussion on the "Picture People" thread, a couple of days ago ... I *do* think it's a touch of "Disney magic" that keeps these forums friendlier than many of the others.

What's really nice, here, is that even though people have strong, differing opinions, they don't really seem to need to denigrate the opinions of others....

Huzzah for the DIS!

Huzzah for Disney!! :thumbsup2

:rotfl: well at least you apologized

i agree, i have one other forum i go to sometimes but that seems a little more cliquish( don't think as many post which might make it seem so) but they are nice . there was however a funny thread on lens caps on dp a few days ago but usually they are "all business" and seem to hate their "jobs"/perceived "competition" to boot;)

This board is quite cliquish IMO, but the clique is open to questions and such from the outsiders. Between this board and my two photog friends I don't need to visit other forums, except for one and I only read that for the equipment board. I think I might have posted there three times, and all but one got ignored.

Sadly this is really the only board I feel totally comfortable in posting on disboards.

Considering that this isn't a "brand" board, the cliquish-ness is pretty low, IMO.

However, a *big* difference is that no one really disparages the equipment choices of other people. Sure, we've got the pro-Canon, pro-Pentax, pro-Nikon, pro-P&S, pro-DSLR, etc. crowds, but we all seem to get along.... :)

I have no problems with people touting why they prefer one brand over another (I'm certainly one of that ilk; I love my Canon S3 and will continue to suggest it to anyone looking for P&S advice) so long as they aren't tearing down other people's choices.

Even the most vociferous pro-brand or pro-camera-type people here are polite!

It is not about branding, I am not sure how one gets into the "clique" or the criteria for it, I just know it exists. It is no where near as bad as other boards here on disboards, but it does exist. Granted this will happen everywhere, it can't really be stopped :)

my bold
not challenging your opinion but could you give an eg? do you think it's equipment ie dslr vs p&s or brand vs brand? this just surprised me since i don't feel that way, there isn't anyone here i wouldn't feel like i could smack down if the need arose, some would just take a little more muscle to do it effectively :rotfl2: :rotfl2: ;) ;) ;)
i agree about the rest of the dis though sometimes you are taking your life in your hands when it comes to thing related to WDW:scared1:

opps sorry i read your response to late ...so now i know it isn't brand at least:)

I frequent a few boards quite a bit. I think what happens is the folks that go there a lot actually develope friendships, even though most have never met in person. That frienship comes though in their posts to each other and the way they interact. To a causal user or someone new, I could see how it could be concidered cliquish, but really it is just like anywhere, the "new guy" must sort of prove themselves to the group to gain acceptance.

All in all, this is without a doubt the friendliest site I participate in, even the disagreements are dealt with quickly and nicely.

Also the thing that impresses me about this site as a photo site, is no one really acts or feels superior to others, some are much better photographers, some have much better equipment. But advise and critisism is handed out even handedly with little to no adgendas being demonstrated.

I agree with this assessment. To be sure, many forum regulars are *fiercely* brand loyal, but in general, I find the attitude on this board to be helpful, especially toward those who are simply hunting for a decent camera to take with them to WDW, to capture memories. Most of the folks in that category are not pixel peepers and do not intend to pursue photography as a serious or even semi-serious hobby.

The other camp are those of us to whom photography is more than just a few pictures of our family having a blast with Mickey and the gang, and that may be where some of the notion of a "clique" comes from although I had not really thought of this bunch in those terms until the post on this thread.

As MM has suggested, I have developed friendships, of a sort, with a few of the forum regulars, mainly Nikon drivers like myself, and I think that perhaps we tend to "pair up" based on common equipment, at least to some degree. I also agree with MM that it takes a while for someone to be "assimilated", if that is a good way to phrase it. It is those who have been an active part of this forum for a while that comprise this group if, indeed, there is a "group". Those are the ones of us who have more than a passing interest in photography, and dig a little deeper into the technical end of the hobby. The forum visitors who just drop by and start a thread looking for advice in purchasing a camera "that takes great WDW fireworks pictures" (nothing wrong with asking that, btw), then depart after they have made that decision, are not going to be part of the group, nor do I suspect that they want to be. It is the more serious participants, to whom photography is a passionate pursuit, that become that core of the forum.

Like many of you, I have benefitted greatly from the advice given here, and enjoy the banter back and forth. We don't all agree on photo gear, but we do (presumably) agree that WDW is a photographer's paradise! And, I'm very happy to be a part of a community where we can have strongly held positions on equipment brands, but can make allowances for the fact that everyone's needs, means, and preferences are different and that we all use different gear, based on those criteria.

Thanks to all who make this place a pleasant place to linger.

I agree completely- I still post a picture or a comment here or there once in a while but usually just find myself irritated with the response or lack thereof. I love the DIS Photography Board (and the POTD Thread too) :thumbsup2

I have to say though- I did ask a question about coffee mug refills once on the community board and got some responses that would make the most hardened DPR poster cringe. :rotfl:

Try hanging out in the DVC boards sometimes... you'd never think that people would be so passionate about perceived changes in pool temperature. :) If you really want some fun, ask if you can afford DVC - people are always happy to tell you how to spend your money, and you'll see the inevitable fight between the "I paid for DVC with cash and if you didn't, you don't belong" and the "so I mortgaged it, otherwise I'd never been able to get it, so what?" crowd. :happytv:

And if you think Nikon vs Canon vs Pentax vs Sony can get bloody, that's nothing - try comparing Saratoga Springs to Beach Club, Boardwalk, Wilderness Lodge, etc...

If there is a clique here, it's easy to join (assuming I'm counted as a member now ;) ), I just started posting in here regularly some time in the second half of last year... everyone was pretty accepting, we've had a few regulars leave and a few new ones appear. I don't think of it as a clique but just how often you bother responding.

Gdad, I'm surprised you've gotten any bad feedback? I'd certainly consider you among the most talented photographers here. You've definitely got me beat easily (but I'm working on catching up! :thumbsup2 )

This board is quite cliquish IMO

Clicking really bothers me (almost as much as burned out light bulbs). Whenever something in my life starts to make a clicking noise I get out the WD-40. After a few blasts it usually goes away. Well for the most part that works. I tried it on my shoulder thinking I could avoid surgery but it didn't work. It did make it a lot easier to get my shirt on and off though so I got that working for me.

Sadly this is really the only board I feel totally comfortable in posting on disboards.

That is kind of sad. We should form an alliance and follow each other around and post to different boards then everyone will wonder who those two yahoos are and why are THEY having all the fun. Wow "form an alliance" that sounds so Survivor-ish.
It is interesting to see how passionate some of these people are in on-line communities. I think the "cliques" occur when you find people with a similar level of passion for a subject gravitate towards each other in a common bond. I'm too much of a non-conformist I guess as Idon't necessarily see myself as part of any particular group. Either that or I have an anti-gravitational pull towards groups. I'm like a quark in the the particle physics of life.
