I had a 4-day weekend coming up, a planned vacation. Since I do so much business travel for work, even though I like traveling I wasn't up to traveling on vacation. I was just going to bum around the house for a change (I just bought my first one!) and commune with the cats, soak in the tub, go shopping, take it easy.

But then, something snapped. I decided I wanted to go somewhere, do something, anything. I thought about Vegas but changed my mind and decided to go to Disney instead.

My first solo trip was around 2001, I think. I went to Universal, IOA, and the parks, for about a week. It was exhausting, but I loved it. It was the first time I'd been in like 5 years, first time solo, and I loved being in control of my schedule. I'm used to soloing vacationing in general (I take long trips abroad, and no one else is in on my type of schedule) so I was fine with it.

Then in 2002 I decided to repeat it. This time it was okay, but not as fun. I was sort of depressed at the time, and it just didn't click with Disney magic. I enjoyed myself still, but it wasn't great.

So I'm giving it a third try now. I think it's going to be rainy while I'm there, but I'm not too worried, I'm hoping it'll keep the crowds down. :) With three days and four parks, I'm not sure if I'll get out to Animal Kingdom at all. (I went on an African safari a couple of years ago, and I think that might have spoiled me on Animal Kingdom forever!) But the great thing is as a solo, I can play it by ear. I don't have to promise to be anywhere at any particular point in time, though I do have a couple of reservations -- Brown Derby, and Yachtsman Club (couldn't get Le Cellier, probably because of the dining plan and it being a popular one-point restaurant). I usually just eat table service while soloing, but I decided I deserve a nice meal or two. :)

So anyway. I'll let folks know how it went when I'm back!

D'oh. Now my solo isn't so solo. My mom might join me one day, and my dad one afternoon. (They're divorced, but both live in Orlando.) And I invited my dad to dinner at Yachtsman Club with me, he wouldn't even have to go to the park then, but he might pay to go to EPCOT just for like 5 hours in the afternoon anyway. That's about his theme park tolerance, he rarely goes more than that much in a day.

That's the thing with having family in Orlando. Hard to get solo-style solos. :)
