With the size of your group I would request the Disneyland Hotel and then request one of the rooms with a daybed. It is actually a real twin size daybed not like the little benches they have at BWV and call daybeds. It will be less points than the Grand Californian and the rooms are larger. We have done it twice and felt the use of points was a good value. Some people have apparently gotten good rooms at GC but ours was definitely not one of them. It was about the size of a moderte reosrt room at WDW and they will not provide a rollaway. They did send up a sleeping bag and thin rubber mat to put on the floor. We had teens who would not sleep together (actually one of each sex).
I never checked the cash prices as I had the points to use and felt it was the best use for them at the time so can't tell which would be better.
We also stayed at a hotel down the street called the coast or something like that but really liked being in a Disney hotel better. I know there are many who stay at one of the hotels across the street from DL because they have gotten some really good rates. You might want to check the DL discussion forum for info about that.

If you have the points and won't be using them elsewhere, then go ahead and use the points.
But, if you can find another use for those points, you might consider paying cash and staying offsite. If you've never been, Disneyland in in the middle of Anaheim and there are a ton of motels right across the street that you can get a very good rate on. The walking distance from these motels to the Main Gate is really no further than from the Disneyland Hotel (DLH)
Of course, you don't get the "magic" of staying on property, but it's not the drastic difference you get at WDW between staying on and off property.
I used points to stay at the DLH recently and never really enjoyed the perks of the resort itself -- it was just a place to sleep. And even if you're off property, you can still go over and do the character breakfast at one of the Disney hotels.
You could also rent out your points and use the cash for rooms. That's what we did when we found the cash cost of the room we wanted was worth less than the value of the points we would have had to use.
The points required for a standard view room at the DLH seem very reasonable (compare them to what it would cost to stay at a hotel property at WDW) As mentioned earlier, you can get the day bed and sleep five comfortably in one room. The wallpaper glows in the dark (leave your window shades open or lights on after you leave for the day to charge it up) and it was great to just walk through their version of Downtown Disney straight to the park. You can also take the monorail.
Thanks for the info looks like DLHotel with the daybed would work best for us. Too bad we can't use out AP's out there also...LOL
I haven't been to DL in almost 20yrs. How far out can we book using our points??
I think it is 11 months out for booking hotels at DLR We are thinking of using some points to stay there, also, and comparing cash versus points. I think it depends on what time of year you are going, but it seems to me that points were a better value than paying cash in June of this year. Have fun planning your trip !
