Thinking of upgrading to CS6 when it comes out?

I have CS5 but it is an upgrade so chances are I will have to buy the full package of CS6. Since I graduated and lost my student discount I am not likely to pay $600 (or whatever) and will give serious thought to an alternative to Photoshop this time. Adobe may lose a lot of customer loyalty and market share with this move.

If a customer gets disgruntled and looks elsewhere for a product they may like what they see and leave for good.

Since you've already got CS5, you *should* be able to upgrade to CS6 at the upgrade price, regardless of whether your CS5 was itself an upgrade or not.

I agree that this is going to cost them a lot of upgrades. I think Kelby's advice that they allow people with older versions to pay a bit more to upgrade makes sense.

Don't be too concerned about the student discount. I bought CS2 on a student discount and have upgraded it normally ever since.

True. That's why people left Quark behind for Adobe products. The cycle repeats.

I thought this was current Adobe policy. I know it was the policy way back when PS 7 came out. We had 5 and had to pay full price to get 7 since we skipped 6.

Apple has a similar policy with OS releases. You miss one and you have to pay full price for the next one.

I believe the previous upgrade policy was that if you owned any of the previous 3 versions of Photoshop (or CS Suites), then you qualified to upgrade to the newest version of Photoshop at the upgrade price. You wouldn't have to pay the full price for the newest version of Photoshop (or CS Suites).

For example, to upgrade to Photoshop CS5 (the most current version right now), if you currently own Photoshop CS4, CS3, or CS2 (the 3 previous versions of Photoshop), you can get Photoshop CS5 by paying only the upgrade price. You don't have to pay the full price to get the latest version of Photoshop.

That's how I understand the previous Photoshop upgrade policies were.

they may very well help Corel out.

Paint Shop Pro X4 has a layout similar to lightroom, and is currently on sale for $29.00

I have CS5; not sure yet if I'll upgrade. I know I'd have to upgrade to get CS7 (not to put the cart before the proverbial horse), but I think I still have plenty of time to make a decision.... I agree that the change in policy is a little less than above board.

I've been a Paint Shop Pro (PSP) user since version 8 - long ago. I always preferred the layout, it has virtually all the same controls and features as PS, and is a lot cheaper. I recently picked up the new PSP X4, but haven't installed it yet as I'll be soon getting a new computer - so I'm still using PSP8 on my current system. I had PS Elements - back at version 4 or 5, but didn't like the limited functionality compared to PSP or the full Photoshop.

I've used Paint Shop Pro since version 3 and have tried several times to switch to PS or PS Elements and each time I went back to PSP. Just ordered PSP X4 after reading about all its new features and really I have no reason to go to Photoshop anymore.

There are a lot of people that are just a little upset about this change, not the least of which is Scott Kelby, the founder of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.

I realize times are hard for businesses but it's not a smart marketing move when you screw your customer base...
