Thinking of renting?

I am totally new to the whole DVC and renting of points. I would love to be a DVC memeber but can't swing it right now. I have only been to Disney twice and was thinking of renting points for my next trip. I would love to be able to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge or even the Wilderness Lodge.
I have no idea how to go about the whole renting of points thing and if it is cost effective to do so. I like the idea of having a kitchenette and staying at a nicer resort (stayed at Pop last time with no complaints).
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I should go about looking into the renting option and which locations they would recommend?
I have three children and myself (total of 4 people). Two of my children have special needs (autistic spectrum & mitochondrial disorder) which is why the kitchen work great.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Just make sure you give yourself a lot of lead time to make that reservation. Most members make their reservations at 11 months out. There isn't much availability at AKV or BCV for the rest of the year. Other resorts may be close to being booked.

And be prepared to relinquish control of the reservation to the member. You won't be able to confirm your reservation or make requests directly. The member will need to do it all for you.

There are several sticky threads at the top of the Rent/Trade Board. Read those and then post your request on the R/T board. Good luck.

You can certainly save a lot of money on great accommodations in a “Disney Deluxe Villa Resort” (Disney Vacation Club) by renting a reservation direct from a DVC member rather than making the reservation with WDW reservations (aka CRO).

However, please be sure and educate yourself on how a DVC reservation is very different from a regular hotel reservation, and the basics of “renting points”, as it is often referred to.

Then, you should read the "sticky" posts at the top of the DVC Rent/Trade board which explain how to post on the Rent/Trade board.
