I hope this is the right place for this...we are thinking of going to WDW Dec 26-Jan 4 or 5. We would like to see how much it would cost to rent someone's points. But how do we know how many point it takes to stay at the different resorts? Do the points have specific dates to be used? How does the renting points thing work? Any info would be greatly appreciated as I really don't know much about it, but I would love to get into the DVC someday, that I do know!!!

If you click on 'DVC Point Charts' at the top of this page, you will see how many points are needed for the various resorts. Once you know where you would like to stay and how many points you need, try posting a thread on the rent/trade board requesting a reservation. With any luck a DVC member who has points available may be able to help you out.

First, follow the link to the DVC point charts just below the banner at the top of this page. Find the resort you want, and the corresponding points for each night of your stay. That will give you the total points needed. Remember that the time frame you are looking at is the highest point season for DVC.

Now, points seem to be renting at an average price of about $12 per point...that will give you a ballpark cost.

You can post your request on the DVC Rent/Trade board. Be sure to read the posting guidelines for that forum, as all threads are screened prior to posting.

Look for a renter that has a fairly high post count here on the DIS. Get the specifics of your agreement in writing (payment due dates, payment method, cancellation policy, etc) Be sure to have true and valid contact info for the owner (address, email, phone numbers, etc). Use "common sense"..don't send a payment via any method where someone could claim it anonymously (western union, postal money order, etc)

Renting is a transaction of trust on both sides. The owner trusts you to make payments on time, you trust the owner to not cancel the reservation ad follow the agreement. Disney/DVC will not verify the reservation or become involved in the transaction in any way. You should receive a copy of the written reservation confirmation that DVC will send to the owner.

Given your dates, finding an available reservation may not be easy, even this far before travel. Good luck :)

You may not have your choice of resorts this late. Lots of members make their reservation 11 months ahead of time, especially for holidays and other DVC favorite times. You are almost to the 7 month period when any member can make a reservation at any DVC resort and not just their home resort.

BCV, BWV and VWL could be hard to get and you will definitely need an owner with points at one of those resorts if that is what you are looking for. You might have better availability at OKW and SSR.

Remember, the owner has full control over the reservation until you check in. They set the rules for payment, cancellation (and they might not allow any cancellation or refund).
