My family recently renting points for a vacation at the Grand Californian and at Aulani! We had a fantastic time and loved Aulani so much, we're looking at purchasing points via resale there.
Our next big family vacation will be at WDW in late June/early July - so if Aulani was our home resort we could only book 7 months in advance. I'm just concerned that we might purchase DVC points and then not be able to get availability as i believe it will be peak season. Has anyone had any problems trying to get availability at BCV (in a 2 bedroom villa) or POLY (studio) around this time of year?

Almost everyone will tell you to make your home resort the place that you think you'll want to stay the most. That way, you can always book 11 months out and then change your reservation at 7 months if availability allows it. That being said, I own at Grand Floridian and have never stayed there. I haven't had any trouble booking at the 7 month window BUT I am extremely flexible on which resort we stay in. I'm open to staying in anything that has availability and just excited if I happen to find availability in a resort that I really want.

It seems like you have a good grasp of the booking windows and how it affects your ownership, but make sure you do the research and understand what you're getting into. It's the best decision my family has ever made, but it's a huge financial agreement and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Hi!

Here is an amazing thread out together by skier_pete showing the likelihood of various bookings for various times if the year:

Right now, Poly has more points than owners, so it's only super hard to get into in the last quarter of the year for the time being. That being said, there are times when it's filling up right at the seven month mark.

BCV studios and two-bedrooms fill up faster than one-bedrooms. Depending on when you go, that can be tricky.

June/July is peak season for the parks, but NOT for DVC. the 4th quarter of the year (especially early December) is peak season for DVC.

finding availability at wdw in general for June/July is no problem. with that said, smaller resorts like BCV might be risky at the 7 month window - you just never know.

if you would use DVC consistently at aulani, I would buy there - but I wouldn't own there otherwise. buy where you would tend to use it most often - or else buy one of the cheaper wdw options like SSR and hope for the best at 7 months (I.e. be flexible).

Let the pixie dust settle than take a look at where you will be vacationing the most. Hawaii can be an expensive vacation with airfare and all plus at Aulani you get Hawaii, at WDW you get WDW. Buying where you love to stay removes one more element that may come between you and wonderful vacations. Nothing worse than spending thousands and thousands of dollars and having to settle on staying somewhere that you really don't care for.
