Thinking of dropping everything and going to WDW

I got out of teaching school on JUne 24th and had foot surgery on June 26th. For the first couple of weeks I never left the house. Last weekend dh said to me "Do you want to go to DW at the end of Aug for a break before school starts?" I didn't even give him time to think. Within 10 minutes I found us round trip airfare for $60 each way and had gotten us into POFQ within 20 minutes. We leave on Aug 24th.:banana: I did this 3 years ago with my sister and we had a blast.

Many people, including myself and DH, have done this on several occasions. Just do a search on last minute trips or spontaneous trips. You'll find some great reads! :thumbsup2

I have thought about it many times. Sometimes while I'm just driving to the grocery store I want to simply turn the other way and hit the highway. Maybe I should get a bumper sticker that says WDW or BUST!

(I always have my camera with me ... so I'm ready to GO!)
My all time favorite last minute trip story is by a member named crusin'Mike on this thread http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=716431&page=4
I'll quote his post for ya'
My wife and I were taking our 3 kids to Baltimore Aquarium for the day to celebrate our oldest's preschool graduation. We were joking around on the way there from Philadelphia that we should just keep going. Next thing you know, we were driving past Baltimore.
This was on a Friday, so we both called work to see if we could get off for Mon and Tues. Then called our neighbor to see if he would take care of the dog. Then by around Washington DC, we figured we should call and get a room.
Since we weren't planning this, we only had a small diaper bag with one change of clothes for our then 2yr old twins and 4 year old. So we stopped at Target to buy some diapers, swimsuits, shorts, and t-shirts. Then we drove some more. When we hit South of the Border at 11PM, we wondered what the heck we were doing.
We finally arrived at All-Star Music Saturday morning. After a very short rest, we hit the parks Sat, Sun, and Mon. Then we hit the road for the long ride home on Tues.
This turned out to be one of our best trips. Since we hadn't planned on being there, it really didn't matter what we saw. Everything was a bonus. People thought we were nuts, and didn't even expect us to come home. But it was great, and now our friends jokingly call us as the gods of spontaneity.

If you're thinking about it...GO FOR IT!!!!

Mike
They litterally kept on driving.

Another one of my favorite last minute stories is by GADISNEYGIRL (linked here) entitled "Yes! You CAN plan a WDW Trip in less than an hour! aka-are we crazy??". If that's not spontaneous enough for ya then you can read her trip report of the trip she took the very next week (linked here) entitled "WDW-2 weekends in a row! (Actually planned this one about 10 hours in advance...)" Talk about being last minute. :rotfl:

BAH! This thread has me seriously considering a second trip this summer before the kids have to head back to school on Sept. 1... I have a December reservation I simply know I'll have to cancel & don't think I can hold out until Feb.

First I have to see if I can get a week off from work at such late notice.
Why oh why did you post :rotfl:

Update - didn't get my week off - My boss decided to go on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Disney instead. Seriously. He's in Disney now and will be back in 2 weeks.

I've never went solo before but I'm considering it. How much is it to stay a week for one person? Like the cheapest deal I could get. I'm quite spazztastic so if anyone can tell me from experience I would appreciate it. Also when is the best time to get deals?
I'm new to the boards so I apologize if these questions have been answered already =/

Have you ever dropped everything you were doing and decided on the spur of the moment to take a trip to the World? That's what I'm thinking about doing right now. I don't know if I am looking for people to talk me into it or out of it. Who needs to plan anyway?

Comments?

Looking at your screen name and your town and wondering how Illini got to Houston???

I'm FROM Houston and ended up in Normal (with ISU).

To get there quickly and efficiently---take the 1045am flight with Continental, leaving from Terminal E....it will arrive about 2pm in Orlando, take ME to the resort, check in and you can be in the Park by 5pm!

I did this SEVERAL times and it worked best.

Have a Magical Trip!

I am a DVC member and have AP so on Mothers day when I decieded I needed a mommy vacation I decided to go to WDW. I was less money to get on a plane and fly to Walt Disney World then go to Any of the DE or NJ Beaches for the weekend. I paid $139 round trip from Philly and paid for Food. It was great. Hubby was very supportive even though it was Star Wars Weekends and he is a huge fan. He is an awesome Hubby. Disney 3 times in 1 year. Love it!
1) Feb
2) May
3) December

I've thought of it several times but I have a job I can't usually get away from that quickly and my flight takes longer than it does for most people.

This is how it used to be for us and why we could take frequent trips. When we lived up there, we could fly SouthWest out of either Philly or Baltimore for really great cheap prices. Southwest flies right into MCO so you can pick up Magical Express (free) to take you to WDW and we also have DVC and kept APs. Many times you could do a quick trip to Disney for what you'd pay doing something around home for the weekend.

Alas, we've relocated and our only (close) low cost carrier doesn't fly everyday and when it does, it only flies into Sanford which means you have to rent a car. Those car rental prices are ridiculously high. Because of these two reasons, we don't get to do Disney as often so now we've let our APs go. :headache:

As I come home this afternoon from work to a sink full of dirty dishes, laundry up the wazoo to do, and the house is a mess as usual I have the thought that if I had enough money I would go to disney right now. My family infuriates me sometimes. I am the only female in the house besides my cat and she is my best friend. I have 2 teenage sons, my hubby and a very large male rottweiller, who is a pig (no wait a minute they are all pigs- ha!) I can't wait til my solo trip in december.

I know how you feel. I too am the only human female (the cats and the dog are also female) Last night dh and I went to the movies. When I left the sink was clean. When I returned there were 5 glasses, two more on the counter from McDonald's and some bowls and utensils in the sink:confused3:confused3.

I had foot surgery at the end of June and I left the hospital on crutches. I was on crutches from Friday to Wed when I could switch to a cane. During that time the only time they would come and check on me was for maybe meals. I could go 3 hours without someone checking on me.

Needless to say when dh asked me last month if I wanted to go to Dw with just him at the end of Aug I booked it within 30 minutes.

I know the feeling. A few years ago I had a hysteroctomy (sp?) and a few days after that I was climbing down the basement stairs to do laundry. My younger son would help me by carrying the baskets though.

I decided after reading these to book a weekend in November (I've been considering it anyway) for just my hubby and myself. We have 2 kids, 7 & 5 and alothough I feel bad going without them, I'm kinda excited about a weekend just the 2 of us.
We are staying at the Contemporary Nov. 13-15! Looking forward to it!
