Thinking of buying into DVC via resale agent. How easy is it to use your points if you buy into HHI or OKW because of there lower annual maintenance fees and staying at the other resorts.

I understand the 7 month and 12 month difference but is it easy to get reservation with a 7 month window?

What is the deal with transferring points? Can you transfer points between members easily? Is renting points as easy as posting them on this board?

Thanks for any advice. New to the board.

Welcome to the DIS. If I truly wanted to spend the majority of my vacations at resorts other than HH or OKW, I would not purchase at either of those resorts. While in reality, you may not have any trouble trading into the other resorts at 7 months...a lot depends on your vacation dates and habits. Other resorts CAN be a problem to get into at the 7 month window.

DVC also has the right (though most doubt it will be used until the timeshare interest is almost expired in 2042), to restrict your point usage to ONLY the resort you own. This is probably pretty standard for all timeshares.

If you'd be perfectly happy staying at OKW if you couldn't get into your "resort of choice" at 7 months, then sure, go for it. Just be aware there is a possibility that of that.

Welcome to the Dis-Boards. At some times of the year it's easy to get a reservation at any resort and at other times it is nearly impossible. Buy where you want to stay and you won't ever be disappointed.

Renting isn't as easy as making a post on the rent trade board. It requires some work and a lot of trust. Don't buy with just the intention to rent. What would you do if these boards closed down or if there was a major incident in the world that stopped people from traveling?

I totally agree with everything Chuck S said. Very sound advice and good info in that post.
One thing I would like to add is do not buy based on which resort has the lowest dues. Dues are not a fixed figure, they fluctuate from year to year. The resort with the lowest dues today could be the resort with the highest dues next year. Matter of fact OKW has had the highest % increase in dues out of all the DVC resorts for the last 2 years; and with the new slide and the pool enhancement taking place, I would not be surprised if this continues for awhile.

We almost bought VB for the same reason - our guide told us it was cheapest and we could just book at the other resorts (after 7 months). They were offering some good incentives to book VB, so we really thought about it (knowing that we didn't really care to stay at VB). After posting the question on the boards, we decided to book where we wanted to stay. It was good sound advice. We bought a resale at BWV. In the end, we feel we got a great deal. Now that we are members, I have had difficulty getting the configuration of rooms that I want unless I am calling way in advance. In my limited experience, I found I was not able to get a standard view room at BWV unless I really really book ahead. I also found the same thing is true if we want a Boardwalk view. We found that we couldn't get a studio at all at BCV past the 7 month window. I hope this helps...

The first commandment at DVC is: Buy where you want to stay.
The second commandment is: Do not buy at HH or VB if your sole purpose is to go to WDW. It sounds like you are thinking of breaking both those commandments, well, you are new, but they are the best advice around, follow those commandments.:D
