Thinking I may cancel Akershus

I would like to get some thoughts on this. The princess dinner was probably the first ADR I made for this trip. Yesterday I started really thinking about it and looking at the menu. I understand this is NORWAY, but honestly looking at the menu, I am not into it. DH and I already decided we would be getting the ribs, and I think I've misjudged the "cold appetisers", thinging cold meats and cheeses was more like chedder, swiss, etc., and shrimp and stuff like that. (don't laugh!) I have searched like crazy for specifics on whats available, and only see things like herring. So at this point, I think we would be strickly paying for a plate of short ribs and being in the company of a few princesses!!!

If I am wrong on these food choices, please let me know! Oldest DD and I are doing CRT for lunch, so we will get to eat with a princess at least once already. I fear that if we definitly decide to change I will have a hard time getting a new good ADR (all our adr's for the week are around 5pm).

Obviously I'm not asking anyone to decide whether or not I should change my dinner plans, just looking for some additional info, I guess, on the food situation for two VERY picky adult eaters!

We had lunch there on 8/16 and it was one of my favorite meals of the whole week! I wasn't sure about the cold buffet either, because I'm not a fish person, but everything I had on there was ver good. There was potato salad, a cucumber salad, some cheeses and lunchmeat, a tomato salad, I think a tossed salad and the bread was delicious. I got more than enough variety from there. There was also a beet salad which I didn't try.

I had the Kjottkaker which I loved! It is like a meatloaf but grilled, and the sauce was so good. The potatoes were also very good and it was served with steamed carrots and zucchini. I ate every single bite. DH had the braised lamb which he wasn't too crazy about, I don't know exactly what he didn't like about it, and DD19 and her friend both got the pasta, one got the salmon with it and the other got the chicken. They both liked it real well. And all the desserts were great. Especially the cheesecake.

I'm thinking of taking another trip in Dec. and if I do, I will definitely go back, this time for dinner.

Hope this helps you.

Lynn :)

Lunch in Norway was our favorite meal of the week. There were things like turkey, salami, muenster cheese, jarlsburg (like swiss), breads , cucumber salad, tossed salad, tomato salad, and , yes, herring :o) It was a nice variety of foods. We didn't try the ribs but we were talking to the folks at the next table and they thought they were absolutely delicious.

Now here's the flipside of what you are saying.. we love it there but do not go anymore as it is the Princess thing. We are two adults and not into the character meal thing, but love the food.

If you do not think you will like the hot and cold entrees, I would cancel, but I have to tell you the food is awesome..

Same here. It used to be my favorite restaurant on property, but I won't go back as long as it's a princess meal (until I have kids, maybe).

Please do not misunderstand my intentions here, I love kids and have fought for their rights here on the RB, but no character meals for us. We feel that is for children and although I know adults love them, we would rather our reservation go to someone who has children and would appreciate the Princesses....we just like the food and miss it..

Too bad they would not have two separate dining areas or seating times, but I think they did the Princess thing as people were not going to that restaurant to entice them with the Princesses and fill the restaurant. It is really all about profits.....LOLOLOLOL

The OP has two young daughters so I'm sure she was thinking of the princess experience when she booked. My DD4 loved this place both times we've been, for breakfast and for lunch. She dressed up in her Belle costume for breakfast and Ariel for lunch. I like the decor of the restaurant and the princesses take the time to talk with DD4.

I don't think she'd ever forgive me if we went to WDW without going to eat there! ;) It's a big plus that we liked the food a lot, too.

It was always one of our favourites and when we found out about the princess thing we were sooo disappointed but..... we were strolling thro Norway a couple of weeks ago and felt drawn to it. We asked if we could take a look at the cold table (now that it's only for a starter). The lure of that lovely seafood, those salads, cheeses, breads etc etc. ... :confused3 Well, needless to say we couldn't resist and we booked. Now we did have kids with us - but 2 boys in their early teens (clearly not princess fans :teeth: ). However, we decided it was worth it for the food and we were right. Delicious - the venison entree was outstanding. And as for the princess: princess: - well, we thought it would be rude to say 'we're only here for the food' so each time the girls asked whether we would like a photo the boys gamely had their photos taken ;), buit I'm sure we could have said no thank you very nicely and they wouldn't have minded :goodvibes

We ate here in July and the cold buffet was very good. Yes, you can get herring, but there are so many other choices that you'll certainly have enough to eat. Desserts here were among our favorites of the entire 8 night trip. The princesses are also really good if you're there for character interaction. I certainly would not cancel. We've all agreed we'll probably return here on our next trip because it's really a lot of fun.

My DH and I are also undewhelmed by the menu - - not big eaters of much of anything COLD - - but we're taking the bullet for DD, LOL!! This meal is all about Princesses to her, not the food and we're going to love watching her interact with them more than we might miss a good steak at Le Cellier (OMG, did I just SAY THAT OUTLOUD?) Ok, well, we'll still miss the good steak at LC, but you know what I mean!

I always find that when I go in with no to low expectations, I am always pleasantly surprised when something goes better than planned. So, I'm hoping for a delicious surprise meal, but banking on salad!!

Have fun!!

I actually gave up an ADR to Le Cellier to go to PSB! :lmao: I got my good steak at Coral Reef though. Those two meals were the best of the whole week. :sunny:

I will be the minority here and say if it were me I would cancel it. We went for the Princess dinner and I thought it was one of the most disgusting meals we had ever had ..well until I went to Ohana in July....YUCK!!!

I enjoyed the Norwegian food, although it is an acquired taste. As for the character dining I saw several adults only tables (couples, a group of 3 and a solo not counting myself) and they, the characters could guage pretty well by the demeanor of the folks at the table if they wanted to interact or not. Myself since I was using reverse-psychology by hiding behind a newspaper I guess they took it as a challenge  . I'd say if you are of either try it, as a character meal its a cheaper alternative to CRT and as Norway food goes its pretty good.

what date have you got it booked for? if its close to your CRT day i would cancel or move it or you`ll have a princess overload, i havent been but ive not seen any negatives about akershus only really good comments so id say keep it in as you can always say you did it!!,

I'm a very picky adult & didn't expect to find much to eat at Akerhaus, but booked it so DD could see Ariel, and I knew DD & DH would eat with no problems.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked. I didn't try herring though. Like others have said, there's plenty of "normal" food on the cold buffet.

I ordered Kjottkaker, intending to swap it with DD's plain chicken kid's meal. I actually liked the meal, so we shared. Somehow DH convinced me to taste his venison, and that was good too.

It wasn't my favorite meal, but it was a decent meal, and I don't regret doing it.

If you are really looking for the princess expereince why not switch it to a breakfast. We were just there a few weeks ago and the breakfast was pretty good. Eggs, muffins, potatoes, cinnamon rolls, fruit, etc. And that way you get the princesses without worrying about the food.

If you can switch to breakfast then I would. We ate there last Tuesday and it was and excellent breakfast. The princesses that were there are Belle in gold dress, mulan, Jasmine, aurora. and Snow white. The service was also very good.
