My parents want to do a family trip to WDW when youngest DS is 5.5. We haven’t been since oldest (who is almost 10 now) was a year old. They’d like to go roughly the week after Thanksgiving, but possibly January 2020 instead. I haven’t been on here much, but on the Disneyland board (we’re in SoCal) I’ve heard about some big openings that are coming to Wdw in the next couple years. Is this horrible timing for our plans, or will it be ok?

Also, is there a thread somewhere about WDW for DL pros?

Thanks!

Toy Story Land is on track to open this summer and Star Tours Land will be opening in 2019. I don't think it'll be horrible timing as both lands will be incredibly popular for years after their opening dates. The best advice that I can give is to research, go in with a good plan, utilize FP+ to its max, and take advantage of EMH if you'll be staying onsite.

One think I've noticed is that DL people have a hard time realizing just how big WDW really is. Not only is the property huge (it's the size of San Fransisco,) but the parks are much bigger as well. It's going to take longer to get from place to place than you realize.

Definitely true. In fact DLR vets are inclined to at first see WDW's size as a negative. This works the other way with WDW vets inclined to see DLR's smaller size as a negative as well.

IMO each have advantages. At WDW the size is really cool, but it is also true that you spend lots of time on buses and boats. Parkhopping and afternoon breaks take a lot of time away from being inside a park. That is part of what WDW is. What you gain is that WDW offers so much more. It is all a trade-off.

OP, my WDW guide is in dire need of an update. It may help get you started but this forum is really the place to be to get WDW info. Lots of knowledgeable folks here for sure!

If you decide on the week after Thanksgiving, it's a great week to go! That's the week we go and we love it. Christmas decorations up, option to do Christmas party at MK, great weather, lower crowds. Questions about that week..just ask!

Get busy, HydroGuy, get busy!!

Just kidding. I do know how much your guide helped up when we went to DLR a few years ago. Can't imagine having as great a trip as we did without it. THANK YOU!!

Your Nov/Dec date will be nicer weather, possibly. Your Jan date may be quieter/less crowded IF you choose something other than marathon weekend or MLK weekend.

For Star Wars land, the 2020 date is just slightly more likely to have everything open. Speculation is that they'll shoot for a "summer" 2019 opening. But WDW is infamous for construction delays. Currently there's no official word, so it's anyone's best guess. They'll surely try to have anything open before the holiday rush, so in truth the difference in your dates most likely won't be noticeable in that regard. There are new things coming to Epcot as well, and possible dates are all over the place.
