we are really considering moving to knoxville and was wondering where the bad neighborhoods are and if they have decent restaraunts and things to do any help would be appreciated

I don't live there and I've only been a few times, but when I was there it was absolutly beautiful.

I spent a week on the UT-K campus. Its a really nice city from what I saw.

So... I was going to post a new thread earlier today, but got distracted, and low and behold someone else wants to know the same things I was going to ask.

I am also looking for anyone on this board in the Knoxville area to try and get a couple days worth of the local newspaper. I can't get them ordered online. So anyone who could help aquire them would be great. I'll pay shipping and such. Thanks in advance.

I don't live there now, but I used to live there and we loved it there. At that time, back around 1996, West Knoxville was the best area to live in. The farther west, the more expensive. That may have changed. I think you would like it if you like Tennessee.

I live about 35 minutes from Knoxville. There are a few rough neighborhoods but most of the area is great. You will not have a hard time telling what is good and what is bad. West Knoxville is growing by leaps and bounds and is where many of the nicer places are. There are also many smaller towns in the area that are great places to live. Just depends on where you are working as to the best place to live. You will also find many different types of houses from historical to new in the area.
There is any type of resturant you might want in the area from chains to local places.
We get the Knoxville paper dailey so I would not care to send you a copy or two. The Sports section may be very well read as it is close to "Football Time in Tennessee" and my DS17 cannot read enough about the Vols.
PM me you address and I will try to get some in the mail next week.
I am courious why are you leaving Florida and Virginia Beach to move to Tennessee. We have has several families move to Harriman this summer from Florida.

I've lived in Knoxville for about 9 years now, west and north Knox county are the fastest growing areas right now(I live in west Knox in a 1970's subdivision). Schools in west and north areas are better than those in the east and central parts of the county. The housing boom out here has made for some crowding in the upper schools but a new north area high school should open in about a year or two, elem. and middle schools out here are as good as they come. As far as places to go and eat we have plenty. Can't help much with the paper I almost never get it but it is the News Sentinal, a think the web site is knoxnews.com. The local TV webs, 2 of them anyway are www.wbir.com and www.wate.com. PM me or post any questions here and I will help if I can.
P.S Unless it was a really really good job offer I don't think we'd ever leave.

Hey Sammi, this is Tracks N Slabs "better half"... We are thinking of moving from Florida to the Knoxville area for a slower pace of life. I have lived in Orlando for 11 years (he for 7) and we just had our son. We want to raise our son somewhere that has change of season, mountains (not too far away) and a slower lifestyle. We want more property, instead of the developments that are house after house and we both decided that the Knoxville, Seveirville, Pigeon Forge area was where we wanted to look into. It seemed to meet all the things we were looking for. The area is beautiful and everyone we know that has ever been there on vacation or just "passing through" has always come back saying how, if they could move anywhere that would be it. So we are packing it up and heading out. Florida is a nice place, but we want our son to grow up appreciating Disney in the way that everyone else does (we are DVC members so we will be back A LOT). WE don't want it to become blah-zay for him. Something he does everyday. I think we are just looking for a smaller community, where he can go outside and play (without it being BLAZING hot with 100% humidty).

Here's to hoping we can pull this off and be heading your way soon...

Thanks for the replies :)

Having grown up in S. FL I understand the change of season thing, just keep in mind we do get just as hot here(maybe not as humid) during the summer, I think yesterday's high of 87 was the first time we were below 90 for several weeks, so the kids spent more time inside this summer than I would like. With the fall weather not too far off I'm looking forward to sending all the neighborhood boys out of my house! Pigeon Forge and Sevierville schools do tend to get more snow days then we get here in Knoxville, otherwise I don't know much about that area except the touristy places, like Orlando, though I'm sure it has some nice areas to live away from the tourist spots. West Knox county is about a 10/11 hour drive to Disney staight down I-75 but the airport is nearby so you can fly, but no discount airlines here. Add about 1 to 2 hours for Sevierville drive.

we are moving just for the change of scenery, the housing here in va beach is outrageous!! plus we dont really go to the beach that much anymore so we decided to take the move we put our house on the market tomorrow :cool1: so hopefully it wont take that long to sell and get the price we are asking for. we will be in knoxville this coming weekend to look at houses, so thanks everyone for offering to send papers!!! with our type of business we can move pretty much anywhere we want, plus we will be a little more closer so we can snowboard

:) I actually have Orlando and Knoxville weather set up side by side on my computer so that I can compare day to day. I have noticed that they have been similar this summer (even humidty has been fairly close). I guess it will be worth a similar summer in order to have an actual fall and winter.

I actually wanted to move to Colorado Springs, but hubby said that was a little "too" much change of season. So we agreed upon the Knoxville area.

We have been looking online at some houses for sale in the area and have found a lot that we like, but are there any new home builders? We were just curious, we haven't been able to find any so I thought I would ask. Re-sale is fine with us but we want to know all the options.

Thanks to everyone, I am getting really excited about the thought that we might be able to actually do this.

Try inest.com for new home builders. New homes may not have as much yard as older ones, but as the owner of a 30 year old house there are certain advantages of new construction. When looking at homes if they give you info on schools that can be very helpful when choosing between several nice looking homes. Just remember you want to stay west or north of downtown. There is a town called Farragut in west Knox county that is a great area, a bit pricey for here but not compared to what you should be used to in Orlando or VA Beach.

I have lived in Knoxville since 1994, having grown up in nearby Clinton all my life. I live in Farragut, in West Knox County. Very nice area, lots of shopping and restaurants, excellent schools. Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg/Smokey Mountains is about 1 hour from here. The airport is about 25 minutes from my home and Delta offers a direct flight to Orlando! No discount carriers anymore, though.

We have 4 distinct seasons here, but summer is definitely hot and humid. Barely any snow in the winter anymore. I don't think school was cancelled at all last year for snow.

I absolutely love it here and would never want to live anywhere else.

PM me if you have any specific questions.

Just reading through the Sunday Realestate section here is a link for new homes; www.saddlebrookhomes.com
try this local popular realtor - www.starliper.com

Several areas are more accepting of "new folks" such as West Knox / Farragut
and some North areas. These areas also tend to have the most shopping areas around as well.

Corryton - small town very quiet area ...to remote for me.
FountainCity - is just an extension of Knoxville older homes but nice area, Target just left there to be closer to the East Town Mall. Not as nice as west area.

If you are looking to be in a city in the country then try Maryville about a 25 minute commute to Downtown or West Knox.

Any questions just let me know!

We are also considering a move to East Tennessee. I have an aunt who lives in Seymour and my FIL owns two cabins just off Foothills Parkway outside of Maryville, so we're familiar with the area....but I'm still scared of the move.

Our son will be starting high school next year, so it will be the best time for us to make the move. He's excited about it and seems to be looking forward to it...but he's been at the same school since kindergarten and I know when it comes right down to it...it will be hard for him.

One of our biggest reasons for moving is also the climate. I know it gets hot and humid up there as well, but our summers have gotten to where they last from early April until the end of October. We never have any fall weather.

When we do move, it will probably be to the Maryville area. I love it around Gatlinburg, but for everyday living I don't think I would want to live in a tourist area.

I just thought it was interesting that so many people seem to be considering a move to the same area. We'll have to start a Disboard/Knoxville relocation committee!!!!!!
