We have never flown before, so there may be lots of questions to come.

First thing, does my 2 year old need a ticket?? My SIL said he would be free??? :confused3

Since this is your first flight I want to congratulate you on looking into this matter. Your 2 yo is free on most airlines for sitting on your lap...this is a hot topic that tends to get out of control. Some airlines off a discount for a child 2 paying for a seat. Finally, I have flown enough that I would never put a child on my lap the whole flight...I know it is an extra expense, but think of it this way the 2yo doesn't need a ticket at WDW, and will usually be eating off your plate(or is free at buffets). So this is the one place I would pay for the comfort and saftey of my child. If the cost is prohibitive look into SWA or other lower cost airline.

Most airlines offer 50% off fares for children under 2 for domestic flights. This is not true for some smaller discount carriers, but is true for all the large airlines like Delta, Northwest, etc.

I've flown with my son a lot (17 or 18 times in 4 years) and I have to say that I can't imagine holding him on my lap the whole trip. It's tiring enough to travel with a small child without ever getting a bit of a break. :) And then there's the safety issue, which is the main reason I always bought my child a ticket when he was under 2 anyway -- bottom line is, if it were me, I'd buy the ticket and cut back elsewhere.

Flying is great, though! I love flying and whenever I hear someone is flying for the first time I always think, "what a fun adventure they're about to have!" :)
