Thinking about buying....One important question

My husband and I are definitely interested in buying into DVC. We have an appt. to tour SSR and get all the info. The only thing I am worried about is that my husband bids on shifts every month. We don't know his days off until the month before. This won't be the case forever because he is retiring in about 3 years. For now, do you think there is availability anywhere on 30 days notice or should we wait till he retires to get better flexibility? We've been going once a month (husband works for an airline) and have had trouble finding availability with that discount at times. The DVC sounds like it is just right for us but if I can't get rooms then it won't be. Anyone's opinion?

I would think 30 day notice is pretty hit or miss, and something that can't really be counted on.

However I think you can cancel a reservation at 31 days out, and the points just go back into your account. So several months ahead you could make a couple of reservations, and then if he gets his schedule 31 days early you could call at 31 days and cancel which ever reservation you can't use. (Experts, please correct me if I'm wrong on this).

That might work because there's maybe three different day off scenarios. I could make 3 reservations and cancel 2. Is that acceptable to do? If that is the case, then I'm ok. I just don't want to put all the money out and then can't get in.

I live about an hour from disney, i have called many times and have had no trouble getting rooms within a 30 day period. You have to take what they have at what ever resort they have open.

Hopefully you got a DVC friend that can get you the promo pricing of $ 86.00 per point being offered. If you don't, check out this thread . Referral Names Good luck

Thanks for the offer but my husband has 2 friends at work that just joined. They are so excited that they have also convinced us. As long as I can get in any one of the DVC's I won't have a problem. I just love Disney and have been there so many times that I could have paid for this 10 times over. Too bad I didn't make this decision years ago when my kids were small. I kept saying we won't go when they're grown. WRONG! We go more!

If you are certain you are going to want DVC in three years, but uncertain about your ability to use it now, you could buy now (to take advantage of today's pricing) but plan to rent out your points for the first 3 years until you are able to make travel plans farther in advance.

If you don't have a strong preference about where you stay, and are not looking at traveling during peak weeks, you ought to be able to make reservations 30 days prior. We were able to get VB, SSR, and OKW 30 days prior to our last summer trip.

I would be satisfied with that until retirement. I also have the airline discount to fall back on. It's 50 percent off. So, sometimes it might be worth using that and other times using the DVC. So much to think about. The renting of points and even banking them are all ideas I will be tossing around. Your help has been greatly appreciated. When I go in for the tour, I feel I am at least going in with some knowledge and will ask lots of questions. Thanks everyone.

This is allowed, but if you want to make three reservations, you must have enough points in your account to cover all three reservations. In other words, the points are deducted from your account at the time you make your reservation.
