We ordered a cake once when we were cruising during birthdays for both my husband and my daughter. It was tasty, but we had so much "free" food during meals that we didn't even finish it.
We didn't even ask. Our server just quietly asked me one night if it was my husband's birthday and I told him it was the next night. They brought him a special dessert and sang. The piece of cake was very good!
We've ordered both the Mickey cake (Our was vanilla cake) and both the chocolate and vanilla cupcakes from "Onboard Gifts". Ours were delicious. The Mickey cake was pretty big. Even the cupcakes are a bit over-sized. You might want both.....HA! Happy Birthday and Happy Cruise!
We have never particularly liked the cake they bring at dinner for a birthday. I'd just go to the up-charge ice cream/sweet shop on the ship and pick a special treat there.

That would be my first choice, but the Magic doesnt have one - unfortunatly San Diego gets the bad ships. I mean, dont get me wrong, its disney theyre all good ships - but magic and wonder are our least favorite.
