Think again about flying your dog with you

I can't even imagine flying with my dog as "checked baggage" and I don't think they are going to let my 100+ pound Boxer sit on the seat next to me so I guess all his trip will be limited to our own personal vehicles

To the best of my knowledge, this has been the case for quite awhile now. The snub-nosed breeds have issue with breathing on planes, in baggage areas.
Persian cats also have this issue.
And when you consider how hot it is out on the tarmac during the hot summer months....well, do you want your animal sitting there, in it's cage, heating up??? I don't. You aren't allowed to fly most animals during this time frame simply due to the heat. The winter months also tend to be prohibitive when it comes to flying your pets....pets sitting, in their cages, on the tarmac, waiting to be stowed, when it's below freezing.

I wish they would ban animals from flying as "carry on". I'm a dog owner, but I also suffer from severe allergies and being in a confined space with a dog (or worse a cat) would just kill me.

Even if they ever did this, there's still the possibility that you could wind up on a flight with a service animal. I've had this happen a few times over the years.

Yes that is true, however I'm sure I could ask to be moved in this rare case. Also, I may be wrong and I'm sure many pet owners take excellent care of their animals, but I would tend to believe that service animals would be much better groomed. Actually, for me a dog wouldn't be that much of a problem, but a cat I could not handle! :scared1:

Personally, I don't understand the appeal of wanting to bring your pet on vacation with you. I know they are family, but it is traumatic for the pet, a hassel for the owner, and I'm sure the animal would be much happier in a nice kennel where they can get individualized attention throughout the day.

I agree - this is not anything new.

A little off topic, but in July I was on a United flight from CDG to IAD and a passenger had purchased a first class seat on this flight for her poodle. All the FAs were talking about it, but I did not get to see it. Alas, I was back in coach.

So - I used to travel with my dog as an in-cabin traveler ALOT! For me - it wasn't when I was "going on vacation" - it was when I was headed to my childhood home to see my mom for a couple weeks at a time. It used to be that the flight fees added up to much less than the boarding costs.

And dogs don't get individual attention in a kennel. Kenneling is very stressful for many dogs - even when the owners pick the best places and pay for extra services.

A few hours in a travel bag on a flight was cheaper and less stressful for me and the dog. That's why some folks travel with their pet.

I do admit, I am surprised it's still allowed with all the attention to allergies there are now. That said, an animal under a seat in a bag doesn't spread that much dander.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend. Being that this is a Disney forum, I assumed we were talking about bringing your pets on vacation. That being said, I would still have an issue if someone next to me had a dog or cat with them. I would most likely just ask to be moved and not create a scene. My point is that as a pet owner, you need to take into consideration those around you. Not you specifically, but pet owners as a whole.

Back about 5 years ago, my ds moved to Tampa, from NE. He drove down, with all his possesions, except his cat. So....when I flew down to WDW about a month later, I brought the cat with me, and ds picked me up at MCO. I reserved the cat's spot on the plane as soon as I knew she was going with me. I deliberately chose a seat in the back of the plane so as to have as little impact on others as possible. When I checked what the situation was, the day before flying, I saw that I had people all around me. So, when I got to Logan, I checked at the gate to see if there were any seats open with on one around me. The gate attendent was quite snippy and asked if I had an issue with 'people'!!! No, just didn't want to take a chance the cat would bother anyone...either her dander or her possible crying. Sheesh...try to be nice and you get attitude.
Well....they were able to put me in the next to last row of the plane...no one behind me, no one beside me, or across the aisle. There was a couple seated in front of me though. I did ask them if they had any 'cat issues'..nope,they were good to go but thanks for asking.
I kept the cat carrier as closed up as possible...only one little flap was left open so as to prevent too much dander from escaping.

The cat was slightly traumatized by the time we got to MCO...she did cry upon ascent and descent..must have bothered her ears, poor thing.

I tried to be a responsible traveler...wasn't just taking the cat on vacation with me. There was a real need. Now...those people who travel with their little tiny dogs and let them out of the carriers in the rest rooms in the airports?? Or that hold their dogs on their laps on the plane??? Don't get me started!!!

In order to fly with a pet, you have to make a reservation and pay a pretty hefty fee. It's my understanding that they will limit the number of pet reservations allowed. I've also been told, although I don't have personal experience with this, that they will tell you if any pets have been booked or make a flight "pet-free" going forward if you note a severe allergy on your reservation. Just like they will make a flight "peanut-free".

This doesn't apply, of course, to service animals.

:thumbsup2 Thank you , you get what I'm saying! And kudos to you for being a considerate pet owner. Really, I am a pretty easy going person, and not much bothers me, but unfortunately living with severe allergies is no fun, especially while flying. If I did not have fair warning and an animal triggered my allergies, I would be crying just like your cat!

I remember the one and only time DW and I went to Vegas. This was in the 90's and back then smoking was everywhere in Vegas. Well, I developed a sinus infection during the trip. Well during the decent on the way home I was in so much pain! :headache: The only thing I could do was put pillows next to my ears and hold my head down.

I would never, in a million years, even think about putting my dogs into Cargo. My goodness, I'm a nervous wreck thinking about my clothes making it there.

And at 90 & 65 pounds, they're certainly not going to fit under the seat. If they have to go anywhere with me, I'll be driving.

I can't believe how many people would do this. They should really know better.
