I was thinking about going to Memphis instead of WDW this year for my birthday in November. I don't know too much about Memphis other than Graceland. What things are there to do there? Also what about hotels? We would want something not super expensive but nice. Please help me!

Thanks!

They have a good zoo in Memphis. I don't have any recommendations about where to stay except to say do not stay at a hotel in the area around Graceland-it has declined tremendously since Elvis lived there.

You could always go to Beale street if you want to do the bar-hopping thing. There are a lot of hotels around there but they are pretty pricey. I've been to the zoo, too, and it's pretty good. I've also been to Graceland and that is way overpriced. But I'm not a big Elvis fan. There is also a botanical garden that we enjoyed. I'm sure there is lots of stuff to do, it just depends on what you are interested in.

We have been to Memphis a few times (husband's family lives there). So, it has been a few years, but this is what we did:

Mud Island. Did you ever see 'The Firm' with Tom Cruise? Well that is the big end chase scene. A replica of the Mississippi and some museum type things. Not so great really. Then we took a riverboat ride on a Delta Queen type of old boat. That was fun, but not great.

The highlight of the trip was visiting the Peabody Hotel with the ducks. They have a daily happening involving the ducks. Beautiful hotel, but a little pricey.

We are not into Elvis so Graceland was not on our agenda.

Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Hotel wise stay at Peabody if you can. Are you traveling with kids? The thing with where Peabody is located your within walking distance of Beale street

I do not know what the hotels are like in the area even though I have lived here all my life.

In the downtown area:
Mud Island--It will probably be closed in November

Beale Street--Home of the blues. Go to Abe Schwab's. It is an early example of a department store. The Schwab family has owned that store forever. They have a little museum in the store.

The Peabody Hotel--Built in 1929. In the morning the Peabody ducks come down from the roof and exit the elevator via a red carpet to the lobby fountain. Vice Versa in the afternoon. Across the street from the Peabody is Huey's Restaurant home of the fines burgers in Memphis. Take time and blow a toothpick in the ceiling.

The Gibson Guitar plant and museum is in the area.

The Lorraine Motel and civil Rights Museum. The Lorraine Motel is where Martin Luther King was shot.

The Cotton Museum is on Front Street. Memphis was the largest Spot Cotton Sellers in the US for over a hundred years.

There are riverboat rides on the Memphis Queen line

The Fire Museum on Adams Street.

If you are interested in old churches, we have some pretty ones in the downtown area. Calvary Episcopal church is the oldest public building in Memphis. I believe it was built in the 1840s. St. Peter's Catholic church was built in 1852 and was the first Catholic church in the city and is on the corner of Adams and Third. St. Mary's Catholic church is a few blocks from St. Peters and is the Catholic Church built by the German population in the city and it was dedicated during the Civil War.

If you go furthur east down Adams, you can tour the Woodruff-Fonatine House. The home was built in the 1870s and was the home of one of the city's cotton factors.

Of course, there is Graceland on Elvis Presley Boulevard.

If you are interested in old cemeteries, the oldest cemetery in the city is Elmwood cemetery. It is located about ten minutes from downtown Memphis and was founded in 1852. A lot of the cotton men are buried here.

Overton Park, which is surrounded by the Parkways, has the zoo and the Brooks Art Gallery.

The Pink Palace Museum is located at 3050 Central (I think). It is a natural and cultural history museum. There is a plantarium and IMAX theatre located in the museum.

If you go into east Memphis, you can see the Botanical Gardens. They are located on Park Avenue. Close to the Boatanical Gardens is my personal favorite art museum, The Dixon Gallery and Gardens also on Park Avenue. They specialize in Impressionist and English Landscape paintings. This was the home of another cotton man.

I cannot think of anything else, but I hope this helps you some.

By-pass it and go ANYWHERE else. Memphis suxs in November, wait....it suxs in every month. It's crime infested, dirty, the downtown area is NOT safe....the shopping malls are just hang outs for the local thugs......Service is poor at best. Don't waste your birthday in that nasty place. I lived there 31 years and hate the place everytime I have to go back.

Not sure if you have young children, but if you do there is a nice Children's Musuem. Lots of Hands on fun. My 11 and 6 year old really like it. It is near the Liberty Bowl.

I am pretty sure the Peabody is probably fairly expensive. But it is great to go and see the ducks (anyone can do that). Plan to get there early for a good spot.

I don't recommend staying downtown. I am trying to remember where we stayed last time. Let me ask my Mom and get back to you.

Found it. We stayed in East Memphis in the I-40E Sycamore View area. Lots of chain hotels, nice area, safer than. . . well a little safer than downtown. Just don't go to the Ramada out there--we were there and it was awful.

I have also stayed out towards Germantown on Poplar--again to the east.

You will be a bit further from all the action in these locations, but that is what makes them nicer. There is a lot of crime in Memphis so you really want to stay in the nicer areas and just drive to where you are visiting. It is really not a hard city to get around and it is pretty quick to get to the touristy places.

Are you traveling with kids?

No, no kids, it would be just me and DBF in our 20's.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Good or bad I want to know!!!

I think Memphis is nice for a weekend get away but honestly maybe for your birthday I would think of somewhere else.

Memphis has Beale St with lots of clubs and good places to eat. Walk through the Peabody and see the ducks and just gawk at how pretty it is lol. Graceland is okay, we've never done the tour but drove past it a couple times(don't stay in that area). I like the civil rights museum also, where MLK was shot. If you want to tug at your heart strings, arrange for a tour of St Jude Children Hospital. There is a pro basketball team, not very good, but something to do as an experience.

If you really want to see Memphis, May is a great time because every weekend is a different kind of festival or concert.

Midge did a great job of listing the high points, and they can be very interesting to see.

On the other hand, November can be pretty dreary to be honest. Also, crime is a major issue these days. In fact, the statistics are through the roof, and it's a huge bone of contention in the upcoming elections.

We used to go to Memphis a lot, but I've pretty much given it up.

I have heard of Memphis in May. I saw a show on the Travel channel or Food Network about the BBQ cookoff. I'll have to look into it.

Hey Nicole:wave2:

If you can wait until 12-1 there is a marathon.:rotfl: My DH mentioned running this one.:scratchin
