We will be taking a 3 week trip from CT to the mid west come Sept/Oct of next year. And on the way back we'd love to stop in Lancaster for a couple days. We've been there many times before but always during the summer, never the fall time. Is there much to do in Lancaster during the fall? What about leaf peeping? Are the colors nice? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I was just up in Lancaster a week ago. For us it's a day trip, but I grew up in Amish Country so I'm familiar with that. I would have to rack my brain to think of something to do for several days in the town itself...but with that said the area in general could have a lot of potentially interesting things. Do you like antiques or browsing those types of items? That whole area has some good antiquing. I'd strongly suggest Gettysburg - there you could spend a few days. The visitors center is great, and the audio tour is wonderful.

I don’t know if they still have it but there used to be you could take the Strasburg railroad and stop at this place with a corn maze and other things. Also, from mid August - mid October or something like that is the Renaissance festival. Pretty much weekends only except Labor Day.

Make sure you stop at Amish farm stands and buy all your holiday gifts like homemade jams, pickles and other goodies. Bring a cooler so you can pick up a shoe fly pie and other baked goods to bring home for yourselves! Bring cash for these purchases. Be respectful and do not take photos of the faces of the Amish.

I second on stopping at Gettysburg.

Take all the back roads as you will always come out somewhere...foliage will be lovely.

Enjoy!

There’s plenty to do in the fall in Lancaster! For starters… there is a REAL Disney store on the east side of town. Definitely check that out. Lots of restaurants to choose from like Miller’s Smorgasbord if you have a big appetite. You’re in Amish country too so there are plenty of cosy local shops selling handmade items.

Fall foliage won’t arrive fully until late October so you’ll be seeing plenty of green trees in the area.
