Things to do for a few hours with kids near the ship in Tortola?

So we are doing a western Caribbean in April. We are not big shoppers, and didn't see any excursions for Tortola that really sang to us (or should I say, the ones that looked interesting were a bit too pricy for this trip). So any thoughts on some fun stuff to do near the ship? Are there any good beaches near by? Or even a fun museum or two? This is only our second cruise, and both my wife and I have a bit of paranoia about being a Pier runner if we were to do a non-DCL-sanctioned excursion.. not that we'd do anything to be late, but some issue coming up, unreliable guide, etc.. Perhaps those concerns are unwarranted?

I am also interested in what there might be to do within walking distance of the ship. We are doing an excursion but it will be finished by noon.
