What is a cheap way to have the home smell nice. The febreeze home scents the reed and wood ones are nice but they don't last long and are kinda of expensive. Anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper solution?

I have a couple of the Glade or Airwicks plugins. I like the way they smell and are pretty economical. My house is two stories and I have one on each floor in common areas and it does a good job of making the house smell fresh.

I also like the tarts from Yankee Candle. If I am home or expecting company, I will burn those as well. I like for my home to smell nice too. Hope that helps.

Reed diffusers from Pier One are my pick. They last a while. My favorite is Ember, I lean toward spicy scents. They have little scented beeds in a little cute jar in the same scents, i am giving them a try also. They were only 5 dollars and the reed diffusors are 25% off.

The cheapest thing you can do is air your house out on a regular basis. It is amazing what a little fresh air can do. We try to open up our house every few weeks (even in the winter) even if it is only for 15 minutes.

I really like the Yankee Candle reed diffuser I got. It really has held its scent even after a few months. I have tried others and this is the only one that has worked so well.

I'm not a fan of the smells from candles or the plug in type things. For some reason, they all make my eyes water! If I want to have a scent, I will boil some water with vanilla and cinnamon in it on the stove. Yummy!!!

I do something similar, I have an electric potpuri pot, I put in hot water, a little cinnamon, a few whole cloves and few pieces of orange peel.

I like the Bath and Bodyworks Wallflowers. I switch scents every time one runs out, so maybe that's why I notice them more(i.e., it doesn't seem to fade too much over time)? I have a citrus one in right now and it gives my house a nice light scent that isn't too overpowering.

i second the wallflowers from bbw, but i could be a little partial since i work there :rotfl:. Seriously I have been using them for years, waaaaay before I worked there. I am a scentaholic now though b/c we get new scents every 4 weeks or so and i HAVE to try them all. I have pomegranate lemonade in my kitchen, summer orchard in the living room, and seaside escape in the bathroom. I also recommend our slatkin candles. If you have not tried one, warning you will becom addicted to them. they are sooooooo much better than yankee kind. I have tried them all, and i have been disapointed in yankees. Ours burn all the way down and dont leave wax on the sides of the jar.

We use the Renuzit Crystal Elements. It's basically crystals that you put into any glass container, so it can go with your decor and it keeps certain places in our home smelling great. They say they last for about 45 days but I think they last longer depending on the rooms you have them in. And you can switch them out at any time and add in another scent. They have starter kits which come with a glass container and the crystals for a decent price at most wal-marts or targets and then they have the crystals separately, which are good for at least 2-3 refills depending on the container you use.

It doesn't tend to last long, not more than a day or two, but if you bake some chocolate chip cookies, cake, or some brownies - that tends to make a home smell wonderful (plus, you get that extra bit of goodness for you and your family).

:thumbsup2 :rotfl: I do the same thing.

My last house was sold as soon as the buyers walked in the door. I had a turkey roasting in the oven. My agent said the other agent told her they all took a deep breath, then the DH walked directly over to the recliner near the woodstove (which was burning), plopped down, reclined back and said hand me the papers to sign.

I'm also a fan of the reed diffusers.... I never heard of them before and kind of thought they'd be odd....until I got one as a gift. I love this thing!! I got vanilla bean and wow, does it smell amazing. it's in our master bathroom and everytime you walk in it's this beautiful smell. In the kitchen I always burn either vanilla candles (in the summer) and pumpkin spice candles in the fall / winter. the pumpkin spice smell makes your house so snuggly and warm feeling. (it's not all that great for the summer however ! )

Bread works well, too. And I'm lucky that my husband loves to bake bread.

I get the reed diffusers and then buy the refill oil from Kohls. The refill oil makes it a lot cheaper.

Kind of like the onions I sauteed last night..:lmao:

I was watching HGTV the other day and they had a tip to throw a couple dryer sheets into the vacuum bag to freshen up the air while you clean.

Thumbs up for the wallflowers, they're awesome, and the house smells nice when you walk in the door. They go on sale for lik $5 or $6 and I stock up!

I buy candles (mostly from Bath and Body Works) and use them with a candle warmer. It's a like a little burner that melts the candle without having to light it. I like it because the candles last a really long time (they re-solidify every time after you turn the warmer off) and I don't have to worry about leaving a lit candle burning. I bought mine at Michaels' crafts.

I used to work for a home builder and we loved our model homes to smell good. So, we would put a few drops of vanilla extract in a ceramic coffee cup and microwave it for a minute. It would give the smell of fresh baked goods. You can get vanilla at the dollar store and I'm sure we all have an old coffee mug around the house. :rotfl:

Fabuloso smells really good, and it's very cheap! I clean my kitchen, floors, and bathroom with it. The scent is not overpowering at all (like plug-ins can be), but very fresh and clean.

I use "candle crumbles". They are sold by a small local candle shop here and just a handfull in a small shallow dish will keep a room fresh for 9-12 months...-After they lose some of their scent you can then melt them in an electric potpuri pot several times for a fresh scent. The store also sells them on-line at ALotaScents.com.
