Things DisUnplugged Should Talk About on their Podcast

I love Tuesday's and listening to the podcast. However, I have been disappointed in no one mentioning the rundisney races. I feel these are large events that attract lots of people from all different walks of life and people who work very hard and deserve some sort of mention.

Last weekend was the Princess Races and there was little to no mention of this event. While I realize there is so much going on at Disney, I believe these are large events that some listeners do not know about and would be interested in. It would be really neat if you had a guest on each show after a race to talk about the race and their experience. There is also a huge expo during each race with really neat gear that even the average Disney fan might enjoy attending (and it's FREE!).

Just Something to think about. Next Race up is Star Wars the Dark Side April 14-17th. Yes I am running the challenge and really looking forward to it!

We have tried to discuss runDIsney in the past, because they are large events that attract lots of people and wildly popular, but a majority of our audience doesn't seem to care about hearing information regarding the races, with the exception of those asking for us to cover it.

That being said, we are trying to integrate it into other areas like DIS Daily Fix and who knows, it could end up as a podcast topic eventually.

Thanks! I had not heard anything and was wondering. A podcast covering the events would be really neat!

I recall it being mentioned once or twice, I believe in relation to when Kathy and perhaps some others ran in one of the 5Ks - so not completely ignored

I would make good for one of the "bonus sections" - what used to be a separate episode after the regular news episode, but now are happening towards the end - and maybe have as a guest someone who has participated just to go through what it is, how to get involved, etc. (similar to the one they did about the college program)

I want to start off by saying that I know that there's a lot of information out there and a limited amount of time in which to cover it, so you really can only cover the things that are most important to the most people. Which is why I have no objection to the incessant Star Wars talk and the fact that you guys seem to only care about food. I really appreciate everything you do, and I understand that you just don't have time to cover everything, and there will always be things that just don't get covered.

I'm relatively new to the podcast, but I'm kinda wondering when the last time you covered runDisney was. Because it really has exploded in popularity over the past few years, to the point where races that used to take 3-4 months to sell out are now selling out in 3-4 hours. And four new races weekends have been added over the past 3 years, including an international race and a new coast-to-coast challenge that are both debuting this year. I'm wondering if, with the increased interest in runDisney, coverage of the race weekends would be better received now than it was the last time it was attempted.

Since I'm still relatively new to the podcast, I've been trying to go back and watch some older episodes. And I've found that the limited runDisney coverage I've seen didn't really give me such a good sense of the event. I want to see pictures and videos. I want to hear more about some of the cool things you see along the course (like running past Test Track backstage and seeing a car on the track during the 5K in January ... that was kinda cool) and the fun character picture opportunities. And I want to hear about the "ugly" parts too - the mad rush for certain merchandise at the expo, the crowding at certain points of the course, and maybe even the experience of being swept off the course. I think there's a lot out there that can be covered that wasn't really covered in what I've seen of the podcast.
Of course, I'm a runDisney runner, so my interest in the topic is a little different than the average person.

I think it would be great to have registration dates mentioned on the Daily Fix (obviously a day or two before registration opens, because if you mention registration at noon eastern on the day it opens, for some races that's a little too late to register). I think it would be even better to have a video of some of the events up on the DIS youtube page, whether that's just the expo (which is open to the public), or an actual video from someone who participated in the race (which is probably more complicated because it requires someone from the team to register for and participate in a race). I think the best would be to have actual coverage of the race on the podcast, with someone talking about the weekend, the course, and their experience.
Of course, I'd be happy with someone talking about a race merchandise preview as their Rapid Fire. Any mention or coverage is better than nothing, and I certainly appreciate everything you guys do to try to keep us viewers/listeners happy!

I would like you to discuss it too. Running is growing massively and for me its pretty mainstream now. I am heading out next January (touch wood) to do the dopey challenge and my wife is trying to do 5 / 10ks.

I definitely agree with this stuff mentioned. runDisney has blown up and is huge now. The Half and Full marathons in January get over 23,000 people usually. I think there is a big base of people that would want info on this even if you only do it once a year. I remeber a show maybe in 2014? where Aaron Delprince sat in and talked about the January races. That was nice but that was two years ago now.

I don't think any of us are asking for a show about runDisney every time there is a race but once or twice a year would be great.

For example Kathy Werling did the 5K in January. I know that is big for Kathy and she enjoys doing it. I think having her discuss her race, the course, sharing photos she took for a little bit would be awesome. I know she had a facebook post after her 5K this year that talked about her accomplishment. Having her talk about that experience is something I think we would be looking for.

Another one, Tracy Heinrichs of Dreams did the 10K and she could've shared her experience as well.

There is a very very actice rundisney subforum on the WISH board and I do believe there is an interest, but like I said its not something that needs to be talked about every race but only maybe once or twice a year.

Thanks for all the team does you do great work!

That is another thing as well. I think rundisney might deserve it's own subforum. I am in many very active rundisney Facebook groups. I think the forum would get more traffic if anyone had the smallest inkling we even had a forum for it. It's very hard to find.

What would you guys say - I'm just throwing in a suggestion of a once a quarter show featuring runDisney participants and news/events of events once a quarter to satisfy that particular niche? Get a roundtable of 2/3 guest speakers/runners and Craig/Ryno/JL to interview or participate. I agree that it doesn't get that much coverage, due to the demand, however I feel maybe this way can satisfy both? I'm actually interested myself to see/hear more about run Disney.

I would like to hear about the races BEFORE registration opens so that people know what races are coming and when sign up starts in case we want to register. I see no reason why that can't be a rapid fire item when appropriate.

While I wouldn't mind a RunDisney segment, I just wanted to add
As someone who is admittedly new to the Podcast, you should know that food and Star Wars aren't historically all that has been covered. I don't think it's fair to characterize it as such. They have segments in the past going through all the parks and what there is to do in the parks (so basically reviewing rides), but not many new things have been added (except New Fantasyland, which they covered), so there is no reason to talk about everything in Tomorrowland or Future World as a guide at this point. I have seen reviews of tours, special events (MVMCP, MNSSHP, F&W, F&G), etc. They have also done a lot of work reviewing the resorts. The dining reviews had been left off for a time and people wanted more.

As for things to talk about:
RunDisney is a good idea-maybe for a separate segment though?
A restaurant review each week is great, I hope that doesn't stop (even if it is just every other show)
I think some resorts are due to be revisited/reviewed?

I also wonder how the Trip is going to be replaced/reimagined? I really liked the segments that were reviews of things in Central Florida that aren't Disney or Universal. I think the show, overall, did a better job doing that at the end, which is a shame that it was finding it's identity at the end. I hope that these offsite hotels, restaurants, dinner shows, attractions can continued to be reviewed. Maybe every other week or something? I know that part of the difficulty in the trip was logistics, but it seemed like part of it was also that some shows were reaching for "travel" topics when sticking with Central Florida would have been more useful.

I actually would love to see a show once a month discussing various things that the podcast doesn't usually cover. Get someone in who can be the resident "expert" on that topic and can talk to members of the team about it. runDisney can be a topic, and I'm sure that there are many other topics that people want to know about but there just isn't enough demand to discuss regularly.

Yes. This. There are 9 race weekends, and the only time anything gets mentioned is after Kathy runs the 5K in January. It doesn't help that much to know about the race 7 months after it sells out and 4.5 months before the next year's registration opens up.
Wine & Dine registration is coming up soon - I would love to see someone say something this week or next week about registration coming up, what makes that weekend so unique (because W&D is definitely a very unique event in the runDisney world), and how you can register.
I've never done Wine & Dine, but I know a little bit about it, and I'd be happy to write up a paragraph or two (or, knowing myself ... three pages) for someone to read on the show so that people know what's going on with the weekend.

Okay I'm just spitballing here, but what if some of the podcasters recorded a show WHILE RUNNING/WALKING A RUNDISNEY EVENT? Maybe they could make it like a relay.

Dude, have you ever seen a video from one of these events? They're not really up to the DIS standard of videos. It's not so easy to run and record a podcast.
Heck, I have yet to master running and not looking like an idiot!

I was making a (somewhat humorous) reference to the fact that the podcast covers topics that don't interest me, but I watch/listen anyway because I know they're popular topics. I'm sorry that you misunderstood what I said, but I stick to my point. The topics that get covered most are the ones that have the most news that is relevant to the most people. Right now Star Wars is generating a lot of news and a lot of people care about it, so it gets covered a lot, whether I'm sick of it or not. People care about dining reviews, so they're doing a lot of dining reviews right now (which, by the way, I think is great, even though it's not relevant to me). I'm not saying they don't cover other topics, I'm just saying that no topic is relevant to everyone, and I understand that they need to cover the things that are relevant to the most people.

That's a good point. I listen to everything the team does, even when it doesn't apply to me. I do that partly because I like to educate myself since many friends and family members turn to me as the local Disney expert and partly because the team is just so entertaining regardless of the topic. I suck up the dining reviews every time even though my family virtually never goes to Disney TS restaurants.

Tens of thousands of people participate in RunDisney events. As you said, there are 9 weeks of the year with races. Surely that's enough to warrant a mention on the show.

Watched and enjoyed Kathy and Katie's 5K on Periscope, and was cheering them along, as I've done "for real" when I've been in the parks during Marathon Weekend. I also knew quite a few peeps in the past who ran/are in training/will run, and also some who volunteered during the Marathon.

Just wanted to say a hearty "good luck in training for, and during the actual races/s" to all those who have mentioned they are doing so. You definitely have my admiration and respect. Even MANY years and MANY pounds ago during Navy Boot Camp, I ALWAYS had problems with running - both mentally and physically. Would do exercises and callslthenics all day long, but running was NEVER my thing!

I watched that periscope as well. It was cool as I was just getting back from he same event but was watching her finish. I knew because I had just done it the accomplishment she was about to get.

Running involves two of my favorite things:

1. Looking like an idiot
2. Trying not to die

Here my running flow chart:

Is Something chasing me...?

Yes--->Keep running--->wait for thing chasing me to stop chasing me, or be caught by thing chasing me--->Stop running.

No--->Why am I running...?--->Stop running.
