So I've got a friend who has had DVC in her sights for a long time, but hasn't bought yet.

I don't know how it came up, but I let it slip that you could really hear people walking above you. party: :dancer: :dancer: : party:

I've only stayed at HHI and BWV, but have noticed it at both places, particularly HHI.

My friend totally freaked. :scared1:

So...am I over reacting or over remembering? Did I just have a herd of elephants staying on the floor above me? Is it just HHI and BWV??

We were at SSR last month for our first DVC vacation and never heard a thing from above. The resort was pretty busy but it was very quiet in our room.

The only resort I have ever noticed excessive noise from neighbors was at HHI. Unfortunately, our neighbors decided to strongly discuss all of their marital issues either late in the evening or early every morning. :confused3

I have read that if you are under a grand villa that the noise is a little more pronounced (especially under the dining area when chairs are being moved around).

At all our other DVC stays I haven't noticed anything...especially at SSR. I remember commenting during our SSR stay that I wouldn't even know we had neighbors if we didn't pass them in the corridor.

We have been to SSR 3 time last year...June, then back for 4th of July and in Nov. all 3 time it was full. We never heard a THING!! I love it!!

We've never had a problem except the one time our neighbor was discovered by his wife, speaking with his girlfriend on the phone

Other than that, it's always been quiet and especially so at SSR..

I've stayed at BWV several times and never heard anything. I have heard that if you are beneath a grand villa it can be noisy because of the hardwood floors.

OKW during a hurricane.....couldn't hear a thing.

OKW with kids yelling in our condo, apologized to the "neighbor" and they said they didn't hear anything.

If you are below a GV at OKW you may hear people walking above you on the hardwood floors. Most noise we've noticed at OKW has been from the people next door in the lock-off studio/one bedroom. Even though the doors are double, there is air space below that conducts sound. It does depends a lot if they are "naturally noisy" or "normally quiet" people.

The only issues we have had is also below a GV at OKW where the hardwood floors are an issue. We have also occationally had kids above who like to bang pots and pans or bounce super balls....also annoying, but not the norm, and also not just footsteps.

I think it all depends on how sensitive to noise one is. It's not unusual to hear folks passing by outside or the sound of the tv or muffled voices from a neighboring room. Or road traffic from outside. The ambient noise isn't generally enough to be disruptive for me, but it does exist.

By the way, it's a good thing to "let slip" as much info, good or bad, pro or con, when talking to someone who is considering DVC.

Yes, at HHI it does sound like a "herd of elephants" above you. We spent just 2 nites in a room on the first floor with college-aged young men above us. They could have tip-toed and we still would have heard them there! However, I've been at BCV many times and never heard anything. One time, BCV-(barely)tolerant DH comented on how quiet it was there, that you never heard neighbors, except in the halls.

Thanks everybody.

I guess the problem is mainly at Hilton Head.
(I get to hear it in 10 more days. :yay: :yay: )

Have there been any issues at AKV??

We were on the first floor at SSR for 2 weeks over the busy Christmas holidays and never heard anything. :goodvibes

We had Shrek over us at HHI one week. I swear, the ceiling fan looking like it was going to fall out of the ceiling!:scared1: The guy was a pacer too, from dawn til dusk! We still had a good time though, we were out a lot, riding bikes and swimming. It was just spooky when we were watching scary movies:rotfl:

Staying at BWV last September I had to open the balcony door to hear people. I was a bit lonely too so needed the comforting sound of people nearby. The Boardwalk was lively but not annoying to me.

I never hear a soul at SSR. Not unless I open the balcony doors and happen to be near a bus stop.

We find the walls between units at BWV to be pretty thin. We were stunned to hear a family comforting their small children in quiet tones -- yet we could hear every word. :(

OKW has very poor sound insulation--as in "none". As Chuck S suggested, you can easily hear your neighbors in a lock off due to the doors not being snug to the ground. And we ALWAYS request a top floor room due to the "herd of elephants" syndrome. Last time we had a lower floor it sounded like the group above us was holding a gymnastics competition.
Should add that sometimes we had good neighbors and never heard a thing.

We have stayed at AKV and BWV and I can't say that we had any problems with noise from above.
