~~ They're leaving the nest, sew it's time for a trip - or two - or three...~~ D~'s bag ~9/22 ~~

It looks like the kitchen is coming along nicely! When is the target date to have this all done? I can't imagine doing what you've done in the amount of time you did it. Seriously, we'd still be working on the first project if it was my house. It always takes us forever to do anything.

How great that your dishwasher got installed.
Sounds like there is a lot of work to be done before the kitchen is finished.

Wow, so much work being done. You are going to be so happy to have it all finished. I just have to say that we had always had "cheap" dishwashers. When I renovated my kitchen I got a Bosch. It's awesome!! You are going to love that dishwasher more than you can even imagine!!!

I can't wait to see your completed countertops!!!

Thanks! :) Well, the countdown is very slim... We have 3 working weekends to finish it all up. With Memorial Day weekend in there as an extended working weekend, as well. With that though - we really NEED to rip out the carpeting on our stairs too... Allison and I took a little peek the other day - and they are pretty ugly under there, but much better than the carpet we have - legitimate farmhouse stairs. ::yes:: We also NEED to replace the tile in our main floor bathroom - as the grout is disintegrated over time, and there are a few spots where there is none left... So, those are two things that must be done yet... Not to mention power washing the front porch and back deck and everything we have to do to get the yard ready and the house cleaned and ready for guests. I am trying hard not to think about all we have to do, and just concentrate on the projects at hand. I am hoping that Josh has a few vacation days along the way that he can devote to this - then we might have a chance. :scratchin

Typically - we'd have given up on these projects a long time ago - but we have a deadline and a party to keep us on our toes. :thumbsup2

Yes - I am super excited about all of it! It's looking fantastic!

I sure will! I cannot wait. For so many years - I've never really enjoyed having company, because we've always had a half finished house... I know I've said this recently, but for so many years now, I've really disliked this house so much... But now that the living room is done - and I truly love that space, I've come to the conclusion that i need to embrace what we can afford and what we have - and not what I want, necessarily. It's been a process, for sure. But for the first time - I am super excited about the outcome of this project, and I am hoping that it turns out as well in real life as it looks in my head. ::yes::

I cannot wait to use this dishwasher - in all honesty, I should have purchased a new one several years ago - as I was washing dishes before I would wash dishes, and the silverware thing had holes all over the bottom, so silverware had to be placed strategically or it would fall through and cause the bottom tray not to open - so annoying... then we never could get it sitting in there properly - a clip was broken, so any time you'd pull a drawer out, it would tip forward... It was time - overdue for sure. I can't wait to have a machine that works! :lovestruc

I am sooo excited to share them! So far - they look amazing!!! :woohoo:

*************************************************************************************************

Well, yesterday was a full working day for us...

It started off by me going to 2 home improvement stores - Grrrr... The first one didn't carry the color of stain I'd been using to mix my own custom color for the counter top. So, I went to the 2nd store, and they were out of quart sizes. :( I had no time to go elsewhere... So I asked the nice manager on duty if they would sell me 4 pint size jars for the price of a quart size, and they did! :woohoo: Not a huge deal, but the price went from $19 for four of them, down to $8 - which is the price of a quart. Phew!

Stain colors in hand, I headed home.

Josh and I immediately went to doing the final preparation on the counter top... Final sanding, so make sure we had it just right. And then cleaning it really well. The plan was, I was going to stain it, while he started priming the cabinet bases inside... but as he was putting the first section of stain on - I noticed it was drying very quickly due to the wind, so rather than leave it on for 60 minutes - we were having to wipe it off in about 10.... So, we worked together - he put it on, and I wiped it off as soon as it started to dry. We ended up doing 2 coats of this. It's very close to the color I wanted - I did want it just a smidge darker at some of the lighter spots, but I love the variation and everything about it. Considering we've never made a counter top before - I am THRILLED, beyond belief, at how great this turned out! Now I have 4 days of sealing ahead of me... The sealer does have a bit of gloss to it - so if it's too glossy when I am done, I will take a sander to it and make it a little less shiny. :thumbsup2

20160515_140721.jpg

From there - we went into the kitchen and began work on priming the cabinet bases and some of the trim/walls. Included in this is the cabinet I hope to keep the doors off of... It's not a beautiful cabinet by any means - but now that it's all white, I think there is potential there - for it to be somewhat cute. LOL :scratchin So, we have the first coat of primer on all of the cabinet bases and tops up to the stove. We still plan to do a 2nd coat of primer... And then we will move on to painting. :woohoo:

20160515_182249.jpg

Just a reminder - here's my colors - so far... The lightest is my cabinets (and for the record, this color is almost exactly what I originally had)... The next lightest is my walls... And the darkest is my wainscot backsplash. As of now, I am still not doing an accent wall. I am thinking it's going to be much lighter in the kitchen now with these colors - that is my hope anyways... the red we have now is soooo dark!

20160515_131727.jpg

It doesn't look like we got a lot done this weekend - but we did. It's definitely going MUCH slower than I'd hoped though.

I hope, during the week - we are able to get the 2nd coat of primer on all of the cabinets, and also get 2 coats (if necessary) of paint on them, so when Saturday rolls around, we don't have to waste any more time, and we can install the counter tops, sink and plumb the dishwasher. ::yes:: Also, during the week - I will be applying my 4 coats of Waterlox to the counter top.

Today - I will be walking this morning (again, my office is full - this time with kitchen stuff). I feel like walking isn't enough for me, to make up for the lack of kitchen and eating out a LOT more than usual. It's hard! But at least it's better than nothing - and it's supposed to be beautiful here all week.

I will also be working in my sewing room all day - I have a lot to work on and get done up there.

This afternoon, I need to clean the house... Because, as if all of this wasn't enough... Josh offered to dog sit his Dad's 3 dogs for 2 days. :scratchin It's hard enough with our 2, since they aren't allowed in the living room anymore, unless their feet are clean... and with the kitchen ripped apart - they don't spend much time in the house at all. So, adding 3 more... I am not sure what he was thinking?

Anyways... I hope all of your have a wonderful day!!! I hope you are enjoying the wrap up of all our projects? I cannot wait to be DONE living in this mess, and have life back to normal! ::yes::

D~

I was washing dishes before I would wash dishes,

This was the hardest thing to teach my family. With the Bosch you need to make sure nothing chunky is on the dishes, but otherwise throw them in there dirty. It does great cleaning everything. Once in awhile a pan needs to be re-done, but that is a rare thing.

I'm really enjoying watching your home come together from the comfort of my couch. We also work much better having a deadline - especially having company! Just think how much you'll get done by the time your youngest daughter graduates :-) Keep up the good work! :dogdance:

Your kitchen is starting to come together. I can't wait to see how it turns out. The counters look really good with the stain but you guys are making me tired just reading about everything that you are either doing or have to do. There are so many projects that need done in my house. I just need time and money to do them.
Yesterday was a lazy day for me. After going to Target and Aldi for food, I just stayed home. Aldi was busier than I'd ever seen it before. Every register was open. I'd never seen that before. It was cold with snow, sleet and rain yesterday. My sister had tickets to an Indians baseball game, too. She wasn't too happy about the weather and said it was football weather. I did sign up for the color run in Cleveland next month or in my case, the color walk but I do walk very fast.
Some news about our trip, we're going to the second night of Nights of Joy. All of my daughters favorite bands are playing that day. We still have to buy Halloween party tickets yet but we're getting there.
Have a good day.
Liz

I love the countertops!

Hmmm...I'm thinking I need to have a big party at my house to motivate myself to get some projects done.

The countertops look beautiful!!! Enjoy your walk!!

Thank you!!! The more I look at them, the more I love them and the more I am impressed with them. I cannot wait to get it in here and get it installed - it's going to be perfect with our "theme". :lovestruc

Thanks - it was a nice walk... A beautiful morning and just a gorgeous day all around.

Deadlines are great for getting things done. Your house will look gorgeous for the party.

Isn't that the truth? LOL I feel like I should have had a party long ago. LOL I sure hope so - I look at all we still have to do and all we want to do - and I just have no idea how we are going to get it done?

Yes - we have the hardest time when we are at the lake - it's nice, but it's definitely hard to get used to. The worst part, in the past, is coming home and needing to relearn to wash our dishes before we put them in the dishwasher. :lmao: We won't have to do that anymore. ::yes:: I am excited to begin using it... Right now - I am washing all dishes in the little bathroom sink - so I thought I had it bad before? :scratchin Trying to get a cookie sheet washed in there takes some pretty fine talent. LOL Still hoping for this weekend as an install goal.

Hahahaha... I sure wish I was spending more time on my couch right now... Soon - very very soon... And then I will get to enjoy it.

Ahhhh, yes... V's graduation is next year - and I have PLANS... ::yes:: Big, big plans... Let's just say, when Josh hears me mention "Pinterest" - he runs away screaming. LOL Poor guy.

Thanks Liz... I cannot wait to see it all done and all come together... I am hoping, by the end of this weekend - we will be done with the long counter top area and we can move on to the short counter top - which will be much easier - I hope... As it's shorter and not as much to do - except install the new microwave - if we choose to do that before the party? :scratchin

I know the feeling - there is still so much that needs to be done... Our yard is a jungle - seriously. But Josh refuses to mow while we are doing the counter top out there, because he is afraid he will kick grass or dust on to it - which I totally understand... But I am sure our neighbors wouldn't mind if we took a quick spin around our yard. :scratchin Hopefully he can sneak in a quick mow - between the two counter tops?

I know - this weekend was so unseasonably cold - I couldn't believe it! It seems to be back to more seasonable temps now - I hope.

Yay on the color run/walk!!! That is awesome! I wish I could wrap my brain around running again - My knee is fully healed - I think - and I would love to get back into it. I am sure I will yet this summer, I just need to get through these next few weeks. ::yes::

Do our trips overlap at all? I know we won't be there for any nights of joy... But we will be there for a few MNSSHPs... :scratchin

I hope you have a great day!

I love the countertops!

Hmmm...I'm thinking I need to have a big party at my house to motivate myself to get some projects done.

Thanks!!! I am so excited about them! Every time I go out there - I am just thrilled with how they are turning out. This has definitely been a fun and rewarding project so far.

Hahahaha... Yes - I wish I would have had a big party years ago - I am having so much fun with this - I just wish we would have started sooner - even though we seem to work better with a deadline - it's very stressful for me.

**********************************************************************************************

Yesterday morning, I went for a walk - it was a wonderful walk... Perfect springtime weather and the sun was shining... The new crops are just starting to poke through and it's a glorious time to be outside. :lovestruc

Then I came home and worked on some business paperwork.

I also took a few minutes to work with the new kitchen fabric - I wanted to "test it out" in a few locations to see how I liked it - so far, so good. I cannot wait to see it all pulled together. I just hope I have the time to make something with it before the party. LOL Likely - I'll be making curtains the night before - at the rate I am going. ::yes::

I was even able to have a nice long chat with Myrthe on FB... Her and Brian were off of work yesterday for a Dutch holiday - so they took this time to get Allison's room ready for her... She sent pictures and it was just so overwhelming and REAL to me... To see them uprooting their entire house and switching bedrooms around (no small task) so that Allison could have her own space and her own room - well, it just really tugged at me... Dutch homes are typically small - due to not much land available, so for them to give her this space - it's a little emotionally overwhelming to me. This is going to be such an amazing time for her - I am trying very hard to concentrate on the house getting done - rather than her leaving. Anyways... Pictures to share of Allison's new room in Holland. :lovestruc

Finally - believe it or not, I actually made it up to work on time yesterday. I did not have to run to town for anything and I put in a FULL 9 hour day up there, which hasn't happened in a while. It seems I always have an appointment or errands, or something... So, it was super nice to be able to accomplish so much yesterday. ::yes::

I recieved a nice surprise in the mail yesterday too... Chiara (remember her?) - she doesn't post here much, but we still chat often on FB... She was in WDW recently and she picked up a purple MB for V for our trip - she wanted purple in the worst way... So, she was VERY excited to get this yesterday! :woohoo: Thanks Chiara - if you happen to stop by to read this. (Hahaha... Love the stain on my fingernail!)

20160516_133341.jpg

Before Josh came home - I put the first coat of Waterlox on the counter top... It definitely gives it gloss, and it's definitely stinky... I am very thankful that we decided to continue working on it outdoors. Only 3 more coats to go... :scratchin

When Josh got home from work - none of us were hungry yet - so we all took the opportunity for a nap... Sadly - I couldn't doze off, my mind was racing with all I still needed to get done... But I did get a GREAT picture of V and MM napping on the couch - it was sooooo cute! :lovestruc

20160516_160300.jpg

After dinner - which we all ate standing up... Getting brave and showing you my ENTIRE kitchen right now... Sigh... Total disaster... I seriously CANNOT WAIT for this to be done. We are a family who eats dinner at the table every single night - so we literally have no idea what to do without a table... We just stood there last night and ate awkwardly... It was kind of funny actually.

20160516_072630_1.jpg

Then I put the 2nd coat of primer on the cabinet bases... There is one spot on the white cabinet that keeps soaking through... Not sure if it's sap or what it is - but it just bleeds right through the primer. I don't' know if we are going to try to cover it with something else - or leave it as "farmhouse character"?

And that was it for yesterday - boy, I sure accomplished a lot! :woohoo:

Today... I will accomplish nothing. LOL

I have 2 different Dr appointments today - nothing major, just check ups. So, my day will not be spent at home. I do have a bit of time this morning though - so I will try to work on something for a bit. Just not sure what? :scratchin

Josh has a vacation day today - as we are dog sitting his Dad's dogs, and I complained about it a little bit to him, because we just don't have the space right now... So, he took a vacation day to be here for them... Which means - he will be working on the house today... I am not complaining one bit. ::yes::

I am hoping for more primer to go up on the walls, and I am also hoping for the first coat of paint on the cabinet bases. I plan to come home in between appointments this afternoon to apply the 2nd coat of Waterlox on to the counter top.

That's about all for today. I hope you all have a wonderful day!!! Massive Pixie Dust to all of you! :lovestruc

D~

Right now - I am washing all dishes in the little bathroom sink - so I thought I had it bad before? :scratchin Trying to get a cookie sheet washed in there takes some pretty fine talent. LOL Still hoping for this weekend as an install goal.
I think the lack of a kitchen sink was the hardest part when I redid my kitchen 3 years ago. We were kitchen less from October to January.

Before Josh came home - I put the first coat of Waterlox on the counter top... It definitely gives it gloss, and it's definitely stinky... I am very thankful that we decided to continue working on it outdoors. Only 3 more coats to go... :scratchin
Can't wait to see it finished and installed. It is looking great!

You two are seriously amazing and work together as such a great team!! I have all these great visions, but no real home-improvement capability and my husband is NOT a self-starter, so he won't work on a thing unless I stand over him like a drill sergeant. Really makes for fun when we have to get something accomplished. :rotfl:

What a wonderful blessing to have a space of her own when Allison goes on her adventure!! That certainly is kind of them to make special adjustments to their home to do that for her.

And a purple magicband for V, too?! Woo hoo!! :Pinkbounc

Everything looks great so far...and you are REALLY making me want to redo my cabinets. It's something I've considered for a while and I'm thinking it would really make a difference in our kitchen. DH hasn't been totally onboard with the idea, so maybe I'll wait until he's out of town to embark on that project. I once decided to paint a wall in our family room when he went out of town. When he returned, he liked it so much he suggested we paint the rest of the room that same color (I was just doing it as an accent wall), which then lead to me repainting all of our trim and then him repainting our entire kitchen. :)

Living without a kitchen is never easy; especially having no kitchen sink. The countertops are looking great!

So nice that Allison will have her own space when she goes to Europe. What a wonderful opportunity for her to go.

Love the purple magicband for V.

Hope your doctor appointments go well!!

How very nice of Myrthe and Brian to make room so Allison can have her own space when she visits them this summer.

How nice of Chiara to pick up a purple MB for V. I guess V is so happy for it.

Looks like you and Josh are making good progress with the kitchen project.

Today we have celebrated Norway's National Day. Because of the very bad weather forecast I decided not to go out at 6.30AM to look at the first parade of the day. I got up at 8.45AM and turned on the TV where they are broad casting from all over Norway and even from some countries around the world where Norwegians are celebrating 17th May. At 11AM I went to town to look at a parade and meet my parents for some cake. Luckily the sun came out just in time for the parade, but it was still cold outside with only 41ºF and windy. After eating som cake we went to my parents house where they served hotdog and some more cake and ice cream. While we were there waiting for the time to pass so we could go out to watch the last parade of the day at 4.30PM it started to snow outside. We went out again and to a place where we could watch the last parade and it snowed a little and rained some as well. After sitting out side in my wheelchair for 40 minutes I was cold and it was nice to come home and get my Bunad off and get some warmth in my body.

Now they are showing the celebration on TV again. I will watch that for a few hours. I like seeing how others have celebrated this day today. Ulf and I have just had dinner. And now we will start to make ice cream and salt caramel. We tried to make the salt caramel yesterday, but it didn't go well. So we will do another try today and hopefully we will succeed this time :)
I really can't wait until next year. Then I will have my new car and I will be able to take my electrical wheelchair and go on my own to see the first parade of the day if Ulf doesn't want to come with me. My plan is to go what ever the weather is.

I will have to try and call the garage again tomorrow to see if they can give me an answer on when they will start working on my car.

Your kitchen is looking good D! You may feel like it's going slow but it looks and sounds like you are making great progress to me! So cool that Myrthe and her family are going that extra mile for Allison, what a great experience she is going to have! Love that purple magicband! I've been debating on wether or not to get magicbands for my family on our next trip, if I do I'll definitely need to get some purple ones!

Have you tried Kilz primer? It will cover ANYTHING! I know you can get it at Home Depot, likely other home Reno stores too. They sell it in a regular can(brush on) or in a spray can. I've painted over oil based paint and heavy nicotine stains with it. Even though you've already primed, you could do the necessary areas with Kilz.
