 :sad2:

So a few months ago we were going on a cruise and just before we left I had DD12's hair & nails done. She has beautiful nails, naturally long (don't know where she gets that from!) and they gave her a really nice manicure and painted them in the colour she picked. I think it was $9.00 and I gave the girl 12.00

So today we were at the mall getting her hair cut and she spotted the manicure salon and asked if she could get her nails done again. They looked pretty busy but I asked and the girl at the desk told her to take a seat and told me it would be a half hour - 45 minutes. So I left her there and went to run errands.

We are going to Disney in 11 days and a christmas party tomorrow so I thought it was a good idea.

When I came back she was getting her manicure but was not finished yet so I waited, and waited, and waited, gosh what the heck is taking so long - last time it was only 20 minutes :sad2:

Still waiting

Waiting

Went and got a coffee - came back and

waited

Finally! she is done........ I pull out my wallet, that will 35.00 the girl says

35 dollars? :teacher: did you have a price increase? I look at the wall and it still says 9.00

Then I look at DD's hands........... LONG NAILS! too long, :furious:

What the heck? so I pay and we leave, she tells me she didn't understand what the lady was asking here (they are all chinese) so she just kept nodding and then the lady started making her nails longer with this stuff (her words)

So can anyone let me in on what to expect? will the fall off? are they just tips? whole nails? I have no idea - all I know is that she needed to go to the bathroom and couldn't undo her fly :furious:

Are they acrylic nails? I have had mine done a few times, but found it too aggravating and expensive to keep doing it each month. THey will eventually grow out. After a week or two you can notice a difference. I had gotten mine done every 4 weeks. I took them off myself and it peeled the layers of my nail off. You could try taking her back and ask that they be removed if that is what you are lookign to do. They might have a special solution so that it won't ruin her real nails underneath.

I don't know the answer to your questions, but do tell your DD not to try to pull them off. They can really damage her real nails and make them very sore.

She loves them! she is not pulling them off - she just can't type or dress herself anymore - it's like having a big toddler.

I'm not sure what they are and I didn't have time to go back and ask, blah :guilty:

Sounds like acrylics. I have them and I have to get them filled every 2 weeks. So by the time you leave for your trip you will need to get them filled or take them off. If she wants to take them off get pure acetone (It's by all the other polish removers) and have her soak her nails until they can rub off. It will take a while and she should keep as much of her skin out as she can. It will dry her skin out. The acetone is very cheap.

If you decide to let her keep them, have them do them just to the tips of her nails. I get mine done and I always have them really short. By the time I fill them they are about as long as I can manage with. I think the shorter length is also a little less "mature" looking too.

They can trim them down if they're too long. You will have to go there to get them removed though, when you're ready. If she wants to keep them for awhile she'll have to go back and have them refilled every couple of weeks or so. As they grow, there will be a "dent" near her cuticles. That's what needs to be refilled.

Man oh man, all we wanted was a cute manicure like last time. I was shocked to see her hands. Tomorrow we have a christmas party all day, I probably won't get her back until next weekend - maybe if they were trimmed a bit they will be okay. I felt bad for her she was worried I would be mad and she knew what was happening wasn't right but she was afraid to say anything.

Didn't your daughter say anything? Like, "I just want a manicure, not fake nails."

No, she didn't understand the lady and she was scared to say something. She was confused.

Hmmmm, ok. They didn't even ask what she wanted? When I've had my nails done and gotten manicures, they have always asked me what I specifically wanted. That's strange.

I'd try filing them down enough so she can do things. Maybe next time wait to speak with whoever is doing it and explain what you want. I wouldn't expect a 12 yo to know what to do in a situation like that.

I disagree. I think if she's old enough to have her nails professionally done, then she's old enough to tell the manicurist what it is she is wanting done.

I'm with Lindsay on this one. Me thinks the 12 year old actually wanted the nails like that since I'm sure she's seen them before and is playing dumb for mom so she doesn't get mad. OP, as long as she doesn't pull or tug on them she should be fine ;)

I can understand what you mean, I had my nails done at a place here in my town and I could hardly understand the one doing my nails. Thankfully it was what I wanted but I would never go back there again.

I don't know. I have an 11 year old (boy luckily so I won't have to worry about fake nails :rotfl: ) and I've gone with him to get his hair cut many times. Now I talk to him in detail beforehand and sit there the entire time because even though he knows (or thinks he knows) what he wants, basically if the stylist says "how about if I do _____?", he'll just nod or say okay. Or, more likely, just shrug his shoulders.

I can just picture the scene with your daughter - the person babbling in a foreign language, then turning to her and saying "you want this, yes?" and her nodding to not offend them. Since it sounds like she enjoys them for right now, I'd leave them on and let her show them off and once they really bother her (or right before you leave for your trip) go back and have them removed or trimmed to a length where you're not worrying about them on the trip.

I disagree. I've got an 11.5 year old who would be too intimidated to protest. (She's never had her nails done and I'm sure wouldn't let me leave her there alone anyway.) Not all children are lying schemers like you describe - some are actually just children.

well the nails that they put on are all long. they cut them down to the size you prefer. so i don't think they put any "stuff on" to make them longer. but i can bet your daughter couldn't understand what they were talking about. i barely understand what they're talking about.

i like how acrylic nails look, but they're too expensive to get done every few weeks. if it were like $10 it would be fine, but somehow, no matter where i go, it ends up at around $20 every few weeks.

i don't know WHY it would take THAT long. that's kinda crazy! although, with the holidays maybe they're busy?? i dunno.

like i said, i like getting them done, but it's a hassle to try and talk to them and then it's so expensvie.

sorry your daughter had to go thru that.

I could totally understand a kid being confused...especially a shy one.

No idea how to get those things off.

But I'll tell you this, if you chip one, it becomes a lethal weapon! Seriously, the jagged edge is basically impossible to file...you have to go get it fixed.

I had a set once and hated them...went in to have them removed, though.

Good luck!

Lots of things are strange.

Lots of people, too.

when she is ready to have them off..or you are ready...soak her fingers in nail polish remover with acetone...it melts the acrylic
