Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin
The Haunted Mansion
Pirates of the Caribbean

My hubby and I can certainly switchoff/take turns riding with our 5 year old, but I'm curious if anyone has done the above with a 17 month old? Thanks!

Unless the child is terrified of the dark, I think all of these should be fine. Buzz is very mild and slow moving. Pirates has one small drop at the beginning, and then is just a slow boat ride. A child that young would probably not be scared of HM yet. None of these have seat belts or anything. I took babies on all of these.

Not sure about Buzz but the others are perfectly fine. A friend of mine was breastfeeding her 3 month old on pirates....so age definitely isn't a factor if that's what you're wondering. Have a great time :)

On Buzz you have control of the vehicle as to whether or not your car spins. If you don't spin it around you just go straight and slow. I think of the three it would be the most enjoyable for a toddler, it is very bright and colorful!

I think they all sound great. Probably more you could take him on, peter pan, pooh, it's a small world, snow white, tta and I am sure I am missing some. We took my son first at 6 weeks, and anything mild I took him on. Once a bit bigger he pretty much went on anything.

We took our DD at 4 months and again at 9 months and had no problems. I was a little worried about Buzz since it's so loud. She didn't mind. On Pirates, she was only scared briefly after the drop when cold water lightly splashed us (we were in front) and the cannonball hitting the water effect right next to us made her jump a little.

She was a little scared in the stretching room in Haunted Mansion when the lights went out and a lot of people around us screamed loudly. It was nothing big though. I just held her close to me during the rides and she was fine.

We'll be taking her again at 18 months so I'll be curious to hear what some of the other responses are. She is definitely getting more observant so I'm wondering how old she'll be when she starts to become scared of things.

Buzz is fine for everybody. Pirates and HM are way more likely to spook your 5 year old than your 17 month old. Little ones that age don't really understand "scary" yet. (For what it's worth, though, those 3 rides are the absolute top 3 in all of Disney World for my 3.5 year old!)

All of them will be great for the 17 month old, when we are in the stretching room in the haunted mansion, I pick up a kid, husband has the other two, and we tell them to shut there eyes right before the lights go out, other than that they love them.
My 4 year old daughter LOVES the haunted mansion, listens to the soundtrack everynight before bed. When we were there in september, we rode it again, and again, and again, and again, she loved it. I had to crack up, because when you are waiting outside, then they open the doors, she got where she would walk into the stretching room, and start there whole speech, everyone please step away from the walls to the dead center of the room, she even got on of the CMs to crack a smile when she started with it!
I bet your 17 month old will love buzz, ours did, she thought it was hysterical to spin!
Good luck
Heidi

my daughter was 20 months during her first trip..she LOVED buzz, and HATED HATED HATED the other two--the dark of potc scared her but the many ghosts that pop out and scream on hm nearly sent her over the edge and she cried and had to be held for the next hour or so. and she was skeptical to ride anything else the rest of the day. but each and every kid is different. my only suggestion is that if they start freaking out and you can still take the chicken exit, do so instead of trying to "talk them into it". hope this helps!

My son rode all of those at 12 mos. and again at 23 mos. No problems whatsoever.

We took our son on those rides when he was 15 months old and he was fine. He rode on almost everything that didn't have a height requirement.

Then, when he was 2 1/2 years old, he was afraid on every single ride, except It's a Small World. We must have rode that ride 30 times on that trip! We laugh about it now (he's 6), but at the time, I remember us being quite miserable.

We took our son last year when he was 19 months, he loved everything even "It's Tough to be a Bug" and the Alien in the Great Movie Ride. Our daughter, who was 5 1/2 at the time was afraid of EVERYTHING, even Philharmagic. It definately depends on the child.

my then 14mo did fine on all of those plus dumbo, peter pan, the many adventures of Winnie hte pooh, philharmagic, Cinderella's Carousel, Dumbo, just about anything that did not have a height requirement. I even nursed on a few of them.

My 4YO had the most "problems" - mostly with Haunted Mansion we got off, walked outside, then she promptly burst into tears. Now she can't wait to ride it again. She will be 5 on our next trip.

Have Fun!!

What about a 13mth old? Would rides like Peter Pan, IASW, and flying carpets still be viable? I'm curious only because I don't want to leave my DW at the gate all the time, it'd be nice to get one as a family.

Thanks

DS#2 then 13 months did fine on those rides! He was young enough to have no concepts of Ghosts (If your LO is afraid of the dark, purchase one of those light up whirly gigs beforehand), Pirates was OK, he fell asleep 1/2 way thru amd he LOVED Space Ranger Spin! All those bright glowing colors and hands on fun - what a hoot! Also he was very familiarw ith Buzz and Toy Story as a whole! Enjoy !!

We did all but the Haunted Mansion with my 17 mos DS. We only didn't do the Haunted Mansion with him because he was stroller napping at the time.

As long as your DD isn't afraid of being in the dark, these rides shouldn't be scary for a young toddler. Buzz Lightyear is very visually stimulating and DS loved looking at all of the colors. The other two are actually pretty quiet. Nothing comes flying at you (like Star Tours) or anything like that, so at that age, they really aren't frightening rides. For toddlers, fear generally is wrapped around fear of separation, fear of strangers, loud noises, something that could be physically dangerous. Haunted Mansion and Pirates is more "conceptual" fear -- fear of the unknown, fear of "spooky" things, things that don't generally kick in until children are past age 2.

All of those things would be great. I would start with flying carpets or dumbo -- something that is a "ride" but the scenery is "normal." That will introduce the concept to your toddler. Then go for a ride like IASW, where the scenery is fanciful. If they are OK with those, then try a "dark" ride like Peter Pan.

Oh, and the PhilharMagic movie is pretty cool. I was actually able to hold the glasses up to my DS (he wouldn't wear them) long enough for him to get the 3D effect a few times. It was so cute to watch him grab in front of himself to try to "catch" something.

Thanks for all the great responses!! I'll talk to DW tonight and we'll figure out what rides we will take him on.

DS loved Buzz (at both 15 months and 20 months). We took him on Haunted Mansion at 20 months and I wish we hadn't. He didn't really freak out, but he certainly didn't enjoy it and I was worried the whole time that he was going to freak. It just wasn't worth it, so we didn't go on POTC because of how HH went. I *really* think it depends on the kid. I would be more likely to take a younger sibling if they would otherwise be upset that big brother/big sister was getting to go, I think.

My son LOVED Dumbo, Magic Carpets, Small World, the teacups and the Carousel the best. One thing I didn't realize is that Astro Orbiter goes a LOT faster than Dumbo and Magic Carpets. He did NOT enjoy that one (and it made me a little nauseous, too, actually!).

Have fun!!
