There's no PTA at Disney, right?

I just finished up a teacher appreciation luncheon at one of our schools. A few of our staff was less than appreciative. I am soooooo tired of school, volunteering and the PTA. Not that I need another reason to be excited, but no school!!!!! Anyone else in the same boat? If so, have a great, volunteer-free trip.

Thank you for all you do!! There are not enough people out there who will give of themselves and their time without something monetary in return! (I know, you get personal satisfaction.) Our school actually dissolved our PTA a few years ago and it makes it very difficult to get a parents opinion heard. I really hope you enjoy your trip. I felt like WDW was an island that all my worries and responsibilities were at home. Truly, I never thought of them until the last night! It was amazing! HAVE FUN!!:cool1:

Come to my school----we'll make you feel welcome and appreciated. We love the appreciation luncheons and we take good care of our PTO ladies. It isn't easy helping out and then not feeling appreciated. I did a lot of work volunteer work at my kids school and ended up subbing more and more and now mostly sub at my youngest's elementary school. It is a thankless job for some, but at our school, we really appreciated our volunteers.

I hear you - sort of. I also headed Teacher Appreciation Week and it was a TON of work but our staff is fabulous and really went out of their way to say thank you right back. However, I did more volunteering this year than ever before and I'm not sorry school is over in 4 weeks!

Nope, no PTA at WDW, no Girl Scout troop, no skating club board, and no one calling for you to mail out donation letters! I'm a volunteer-addict, and my husband finally had to put a stop to it! Now, if only my mom couldn't track me down when I'm there as well, LOL!

I do agree it's nice to get away from the home stuff - it's even especially nice not to get woken up by the cats and having to deal with stinky wet catfood at 5:15 AM...:rotfl:

Where do I sign up? I'm not on the PTA committee, but do a lot of work with them and I am the room mom for my son's k class. I spent an hour on the phone today talking about field day and teachers gifts, and the last class party. It's been a rough year dealing with parents and parties and fun food friday! :confused3 I am ready for Disney!

I work at a Title 1 school and while our PTA is a little slim they work very hard and take really good care of us and our kids. I am sorry that your school does not appreciate you. Come over to us, we will love you right back.

I feel your pain! I am the President of the PTO at our middle school and Vice-President at our elementary school. Sometimes I feel like I've taken on a full-time job that has no pay. I'm actually happy that I have the opportunity to volunteer in such a big way at my kid's schools, but there are times when I do feel unappreciated also. People don't realize what a big job it can be. Oh well, it's summertime here and I'm ready to relax and I'm sure I'll be ready for school to go back in about 10 weeks or so.

I am so tired of our school district and the new junk they are trying for next year. One thing is that they are now making kids that could be in advance math take some test and they have to score 2 grades ahead in order to be in the advanced math class. This means my daughter who is in Kindergarten and just completed 1st grade math has to go back through 1st grade Math next year. They are doing this as they don't want kids getting overwhelmed but what they fail to realize is that they now have kids thinking they are not smart enough to advance to 2nd grade math and are being forced to repeat 1st grade math. Of course the teacher's kids are being placed in the advance math regardless of the test results. This is also a school that has a very horrible mold problem to the fact that many kids are very sick at the school. I am so ready for the school year to be over so I can re-evaluate my options for next year since I now only have 1 child in this age level.

I am president of our PTA and a wise teacher told me that there will always be the squeaky wheels who complain about everything but they are few and the ones who appreciate us are in the majority (they just need to speak up more!).

Have a great time at Disney!

I am so with you. I honestly DO feel appreciated at our elem, and the principal tells me every time he sees me just how much they appreciate my efforts. But the same 6 people are the ones that do EVERYTHING. And 4 or 5 more that volunteer to help sometimes, a couple complain the whole time they are "helping". I'd really rather do it on my own than want to kill the person "helping" me out. It's really frustrating.

BUT, our teachers are awesome and really try to let us know how much they appreciate us. And they don't ask for the moon and stars; they ask for things we can actually do and will work well in their classrooms.

I'm still glad that after Tuesday there are no more hot dog sales, teacher breakfasts and lunches, kindergarten sign-ups, field trips, and cafeteria volunteering. I need a break. :) And then I'll finish getting the dang box tops out by June 30 so we don't lose the ones that expire that date... LOL

I didn't mean to sound so negative in my original post. I am so grateful that I am able to volunteer in the classroom instead of teaching it. The majority of our teachers do appreciate all we do and I don't mind helping because I know how important and how hard our teachers work. But today was just one of those days, I felt like throwing a pity party party:and wanted some folks to join in. Thanks so much for all the kind words and comments. You know it is bad when you are more excited about summer break than the kids are! Well I have to get busy, I just got back from a meeting at the central office concerning football concessions, guess who was volunteered to type the minutes....:thumbsup2

Box Tops! Box Tops! Don't even get me started on Box Tops!!!

I have 6 more days until school is OVER! Anything to do with education is a pretty thankless job for the most part, no matter which side of the desk you're on! Everyone expects the moon and stars! I will be so glad when this year is done..... As a teacher, THANK YOU! My BFF is our PTO President, and I know how hard she works! I think we are all wiped out!

NO MORE HOMEWORK, NO MORE BOOKS, NO MORE TEACHER'S (AND KIDS:) ) DIRTY LOOKS!

hmmm, is this where I cue Alice Cooper? LOL

... School's - out - COM-PLETE-LY!!!!!

until next year...

How do you know that?

I love our school... the staff and teachers are great! And the PTO does some really wonderful stuff.

But our PTO has really alienated a lot of people this year with the way they try to bleed you dry (money, volunteering time, etc..). They have new officers this year. And it seems like every time you turn around, they want $$ for their coffers (which aren't anywhere near red), auction donations for fundraisers, or volunteers for fundraisers.

The thing is, we're a very small school (one class per grade) and we don't have the resources (people, $$$) to support some of the plans our PTO has for the long-term. Sure, when the economy was going like gang-busters, we had a couple of years of really good fundraising but our economy right now isn't what it was 2 years ago and the PTO needs to adjust their expectations accordingly. Continuing to harrass parents for $5 here and $10 there makes it less likely that they'll want to make big donations later.

That's why we only do one fundraiser a year. Sure, about 1/3 of our kids live in new subdivisions with large houses, but more than half our students get free lunches, too. We don't have grand plans, we pay for play costumes and area rugs and weekly reader subscriptions. Our parents don't feel pressured, and our kids get the extras the school system doesn't have in the budget.

Next year is my first year as an officer, and I think we are all on board with staying low key and supportive.

That is awful that your efforts weren't appreciated. I recently hosted 2 Teacher Appreciation luncheons and everyone raved about it. The preschool teachers all wrote personal thank you notes.

Don't let their rudeness get you down.

I hear you loud and clear, sister! You get treated like Joan Crawford if you can't volunteer for or attend every activity because you *gasp* ..................work.:scared1: *slinking away in shame*
