I don't know whether its the flu or a cold but there were only 3 people in John-Cole's entire class today. J.C. has been sick both yesterday and today with a high fever and a awful cough. He also hasn't been eating much. He feels a little better today but the cough is still there. He has, though, started eating more today.

The school has a meeting tonight and are going to discuss simply closing the school for the rest of the week. Have you ever heard of that?

 Oh goodness, Beth!

I sure hope John-Cole feels better soon!

Yes, I've heard of it. In our state, if the school doesn't have at least a certain percentage of kids in attendance, it doesn't count as one of the days. It would be treated the same way a snow day is treated and would possibly have to be made up at the end of the school year.

I've heard of it happening twice where a large number of staff came down with the flu, in addition to the large number of kids, and they couldn't get enough subs.

That has happened in Michigan. Poor kids.

Good grief - no I haven't heard of anything like that before.

Lots of (((((hugs))))) for John-Cole and hope he feels better soon.

Oooooohhhh, this flubug is really, really nasty stuff. Hope all the kids are feeling better soon.

When my dd was in elementary school, about 18-19 years ago, they closed the school due to an unusually large outbreak of chickenpox! About half the student body, and about 1/3 of the faculty were out. The school was closed for almost a week.

Oh my!!! Yikes!

How many people are normally in his class? Wowzers. Lots of pd on the way! ~*~*~*~*

How awful! Hope JC is better soon! I work in a K-2 building and so far (knock on wood) it hasn't hit us yet. I work in part-time in the health room and we have alot of the stomach virus going around, but no flu. Hope my flu shot helps me!

I have never heard of that but I am just getting over whatever this sinus infection and flu thing is...Poor DS got it first and gave it to me and DH. I seemed to have gotten the worst part of it....PD for JC and I hope he gets better soon.

It's happened here now and then in some schools. I hope John-Cole feels much better soon though!!!

Yes - school systems here closed either by flu, chicken pox, or the measles, either with students or staff

Thanks for the well wishes! I just got back from Wal-mart and learned that one of his teachers also has it....so not only the kids but the teachers. There are usually 15 children in John-Cole's class. I'm tempted to call the school tomorrow and see just how many are out in other classes. I know for certain that two sixth graders have it because I know their moms really well. Its sad! I just got some more medicine down J.C.

Wow. No, I haven't ever heard of that before. I hope everyone feels well soon!

Last week out of 230 kids at dd's school, 45 were absent on monday and tuesday. Between strep and the flu, it really knocked the kids down. Luckily, dd's didn't get it, but there is some nasty stuff out there. Hope he feels better soon.

Hope John Cole feels better soon!!!!!

Closing the schools to stop the progression of a "bug" was quite common when I was in school. That was before flu shots, though. I haven't heard of it recently.

Beauty, 11yodd, Renee, gets to GO TO SCHOOL TODAY!!! She has had a fever since THURS! I didn't send her yesterday because it was 100. I haven't taken it yet this morning, ::fingers crossed::.

Last night she had her first BAND concert ever and she did attend(she didn't have a fever the rest of the day).
Other kids were sporting the full blown flu, ie they had fevers.
OH well. I don't blame them. We have been looking foward to this since school began. Some of her friends said they were going to go to school even if they are SICK...
Heaven help those teachers!

5 districts were closed here last week. This week only one is.
