And it sounds like a freaking jackhammer inside my house! My dog is going ballistic!

How stupid can a bird be? It's driving me crazy! I shoo it away and it comes back and it's huge!

How strange and how very annoying, especially having your dog go crazy. My dog would have a fit! Hmmm, do you have a cat? :teeth:

Does it look like this?

If so, that's a Pileated Woodpecker and they usually measure in at around 19 inches. I'd give my right arm to see one of them! However, having had a woodpecker fall in love with an aluminum furnace pipe at one of the houses we owned, I feel your pain. :teeth:

Your post stuck home, I heard one here this morning myself! However mine is in the woods behind my house! They do get loud! :sad2:

Do you live at my house?! We had one here last Spring and guess what, it's baaaaack. It came back about a week ago. Same thing - pecking at the gutters outside my bedroom and DD's bedroom windows....starting around 5:30 am! What can you do really? We have lots of trees, but this woodpecker likes the gutters. We have birdfeeders around, but this woodpecker likes the gutters. I'm sorry for your disturbance, but I do like the company... (of you, in misery with me, not the woodpeckers company). At least it's not a daily occurance - more like 3 times a week.

:rotfl2: I 'll bet it is that darn Northern Flicker that was at my house a
few years ago. We crawled into the the attic to see what it was not
realizing that it was pecking on the house. It is hammering out it's
territory. Sic the dog on it.

Not stupid at all... he's "hot to trot". Woodpeckers use the sound of their pecking to attract mates. The louder the sound, the farther his "range" for attracting mates. Back in the pre-cable/sat TV days, TV antenna towers used to be all the rage for woodpeckers "looking for love" where I lived.

I've been awakened at the crack of dawn by that noise too. It is unbelievable how loud it is! The dent the darn gutters too. Even the dog barking doesn't stop them. Once I figured out what it was I tried banging on the window but that didn't help either.

Then this one must have every female woodpecker in the immediate area panting for him! :teeth:

He's gone for now, thank goodness. It sounded like he was right outside my office.

To top it off, my house is surrounded by pines. Guess he's just lookin' for love in all the wrong places...

Yes! We get the big Woody Woodpecker ones, and we get the smaller ones too. I see the smaller, speckled ones more than the large ones.

They're cool to see, but I'd rather see it attached to a tree. :rolleyes1

No, but I still have a half-dead, one-eyed fish. :guilty:

I found this website when I googled woodpecker:

http://www.woodpeckerpro.com/

I somehow remember reading about someone trying to get rid of one & was not having much success. I think I would try some of the visual stuff before investing in the chemical/electronic stuff. Just go to your local party store & buy something that glitters/shimmers. That website has some expensive stuff...

I bet he is back tomorrow morning at O-dark-hundred...

OMG! You are SOOOOOOOOO Lucky!!! I've been trying to spot one of those for years with no luck. Yeah, the noise part is a drag but, wow!, what a cool bird. :teeth:

My neighbors had a woodpecker that liked their gutter. The first time it happened the kids and I practically dropped to the floor thinking someone was shooting at us! I'm trying to remember what they did - I think they put something over the gutter and he lost interest.

OH, poor Mom!!!

Oh, by the way, the woodpecker e-mailed me today and said that "He_is_there_now". :teeth:

We had problems years ago, but we were told to put out an owl decoy. Worked like a charm. THe woodpeckers have never returned.

This is when a PAINTBALL GUN comes in very handy!!! :teeth:

I just go out and hit the gutters with a stick and scare them away. It tends to work and after a while they don't come back.

Yes, they do get loud! We have one nearby and I can't imagine one pounding on your house! I agree about the owl decoy. It may work.
