I need for someone to tell me if this is great or a disaster in the making - please be honest!

After paging through a few wedding magazines lately, I've become slightly obsessed with having a "seaside boardwalk" sort of theme. I feel like it fits great with our location (ceremony at SBP and reception at Ariel's which of course is also just off the boardwalk area). It fits with our colors (medium blue, light blue, bright fuschia and a medium, soft yellow). And it fits with the fun, upbeat theme we wanted for the day. We had already decided to have caricature artists and I feel like that fits in well too.

The design elements I'm thinking of include: the invitations, which I don't have a scanned pic of yet but feature sort of a circus-y font and lots of big, bold text in fun colors; a candy buffet in one or all of our wedding colors; printed cards modeled after carnival tickets for guests to fill out with advice and fun questions to answer, and the caricature artists (the caricatures themselves would be favors). So far anyway.

BUT.

#1 - My dress is not casual, at all. It's a Maggie Soterro, the style is Margaret. It's taffeta, it has a sweetheart neckline, a band of pearls and crystals under the bust, and a BIG skirt with a few taffeta roses tucked into the pickups. I have a single strand of pale rose pearls that I plan to wear with it, and my hair will be up and fairly elegant looking because I thin the dress calls for that. Is my dress going to completely clash with my boardwalk theme or am I way overthinking and it will be totally fine? If I go with this theme, could I somehow incorporate some other elegant touches to blend it all together?

#2 - Does a boardwalk theme "match" Ariel's ok, or is that going to be kind of weird?

Tell me what you girls think - you can tell me if you're reading this and going "Oh honey no..." :rotfl:

I think with your dress sounding so elegant I would go with a classic boardwalk theme. More of an old Atlantic City vibe. Just because you are doing a boardwalk theme doesn't mean it has to be an extreme like circus vibe. The colors you are talking about and the caricature artists make it more of an elegant theme. I think you are on the right path. Oh, and definetly taffy in your candy bar :)

I think it would work well if you find the right colors to not clash with Ariel's. I originally wanted a vintage nightclub look, but realized that wouldn't work full out. So, I pulled in colors that reminded me of an old-style Seaside Resort (I used the move The Gay Divorcee for inspiration, all B/W, but very elegant and fun 1930s resort). Vintage still, but not fighting with the look of the area. So, choose what you want for the ceremony or invites and maybe narrow down the color selection at the reception so you don't overwhelm the space (keep one or two main tones and you can put in small bits of the others). Maybe more 1910s Boardwalk then Carnival(closely related, but no house of horrors). It'd be kinda fun do to research on what they would have had back then, I'm sure you could find some amazing inspirations.
And don't worry about over decorating the spaces or yourself. The color of the Boardwalk goes so well with a white gown.

Hi! :wave2:

I don't have an answer for you, but I had to post to say THANK YOU for posing this question!! I am having a very similir kind of dilemma! I am currently leaning toward an "elegant" style dress for my 12pm WP/ADH wedding and wondering if it doesn't fit the locations.

Also, I had hopes/plans to take photos on the Boardwalk and WP beach (as well as MK and Epcot shoots) and I am having a hard time picturing my dress in these locations! The dress I'm leaning towards is satin with some sparkly beading and it seems more like evening, in-door kind of dress (in my mind anyway) and I just don't know if it works.

I cannot wait to hear what the other Dis brides have to say about this situation!

Anxiously awaiting your replies....
TIA!

This may sound really cooky, but if you're having a hard time picturing yourself in your dress at that location, photoshop it! Take some images from other brides that you like, take some pictures of you in your gown, and lay yourself over the other. It may not be exactly right, but you can see if certain things will be a problem. Such as the size of your gown skirt compared to the archway at SBP. Or if the amount of ornateness clashes with the crisp and colorful lines of the Boardwalk.
I started out with a very ornate design for my gown (lots of embroidery, turn of the century style). But, I realized that if I had an elegant, but clean and draped look, I opened up possibilities like a fancy fascinator and umbrellas for detail. Frankly, the umbrellas seemed way more worth it than embroidery! But, that ornate design would still have looked gorgeous with the scenery.
Check out all the other SBP and Ariel's brides, what did they wear? Which gowns do you think look the best there out of those pictures? Any similar to yours? Honestly, I think they all could work, but YOU have to decide what look you're going for overall!

Yanno, maybe I"m alone here, but I see nothing wrong with it at all!! YOU are the bride, and meant to stand out....elegant, breathtaking. I think it'd look amazing to look so beautiful in a setting so fun.

I think my use of the word "circus" might have conveyed a slightly more garish theme than what I have in mind... I'll try to scan in my inspiration pics later so it's a little less vague! I'm glad you think the colors and the caricatures work! I'm actually really excited about the taffy because there is a saltwater taffy place in Maine that I love, and once or twice a summer we drive up there to go to the beach for the day and snag some taffy. If Disney is okay it, I would really like to have THAT taffy be used in the candy buffet. I think it would be a really nice personal touch. It would definitely make my family smile (we all used to go up every summer, and a few of my aunts/uncles/cousins actually live there now).

The blues are meant to be our main colors, with just small accents of the pink and yellow. We actually changed from our original colors (pink and purple) to these, in part because I was worried about clashing with Ariel's.

I like the 1910 boardwalk idea... I'll have to do some research!

I'm so glad I'm not the only person wondering about this! Also I think it says something that my immediate reaction to YOU is of course it will be fine! It's Disney, they're all beautiful locations, an elegant dress will definitely work, do all the things you've planned and don't overthink it. Hmm. Maybe I should take my own advice!!

That actually sounds like a great idea but I have absolutely no idea how to use Photoshop! But I see what you're saying, and I can still think of it in that way and try to sort of picture it all together.

Thank you!! I think this is the way I'm starting to lean too. :) I love this theme, and I love my dress, so I'm sure if I plan it right I can make them work together.

My question ties in with this also. I want to do a wishes/dream theme, but i'm having trouble deciding what image for my place cards and menu cards... any suggestions?

My first thought was a silhouette of the blue fairy near the bottom corner with "stars" floating up the side and around coming from her wand.

heehee! I think that's great advice! Thanks! :thumbsup2

So, have you decided to follow it yourself? Keep us posted! :goodvibes

Did you happen to look through Martha Stewart's Wedding? Because there is a San Francisco couple with some really cute ideas that would fit in your theme...

I love the Idea...you can go wrong!

I actually did that for our wedding in Disney but our reception was at the ADH but I went more of the fairytale theme.

I am from Cape May, NJ which is a victorian seaside resort. My family works in the floral business and does lots of weddings at the beach. There are so many great ideas. You can go the carnival/boardwalk theme or you can go elegant vitorian beach theme. Check out this site for some ideas

here are a couple I found that would look nice in Ariels

Anyway you can also do favors of salt walter taffy. You can order them and have them shipped from Fralinger's ( the orginal salt water taffy from teh Jersey shore) YOu can also go for the Jonson's popcorn mini tubs from the Ocean City Boardwalk.
Another idea which I just did for a relatives wedding recently is photographing thier name and date in the sand at the beach. You can also buy a signature mat for guest to sign. I make table numbers like this for centerpieces or just frame them and place on the tables. These are great for place cards too but I han't done that yet.

I have lots of ideas but didn't want to make the post too long , let me know if I can help.
