Theatre Breaks???

After going to see Miss Saigon today, which was absolutely fabulous! A friend and myself are looking into theatre breaks in London.

What's on at the moment?

Have you been to see any recently?

What are your recommendations for us?

Any idea's where to find good priced theatre breaks?

i recently went to see joseph in london. it was amazing. we just bought the joseph tickets though as my dh had a flat in london at the time so it was pretty cheap. oh and they were doing great deals on the tickets. buy one get one free.

if you look on ticket master they will have a section on which shows have good deals on.

also a few months earlier my mum and i went to see the premier of starsky and hutch in london and as we couldnt both fit in dh's flat and it wasnt fair for me to just stay we went to a hotel which we got of last minute. this too was very cheep so it might be worth while to put your own theatre break together. it was in baywater too which is really nice.

i really fancy chitty chitty band bang and thoroughly modern millie.

Hi Kaylee,

Fantastic, there's nothing better than London & the theatre.

You can book them together; a good place to start would be www.superbreaks.com who have a good selection of different shows.

You could do it cheaper yourself though if you are willing to be a bit flexible about what you see. I love www.laterooms.com for cheap hotels and you could visit the half price ticket booth in Leicester Square for a good deal (this is why I say you may need to be flexible with what you watch if you go with this option as you would have to go with what was available on the day - they usually have a good choice though)

My top choice would be The Lion King but to be quite honest there are very few shows in London I wouldn't want to see. What would you prefer, musical / play etc?

You can't go wrong with Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables.

I went to see Chicago yesterday (with David Hasselhoff - my mum was pleased!) and loved it. It's got a lot of great dancing, and it's different enough from the film to be worth seeing.

Mary Poppins is opening in (I think) December, which should be absolutely cracking. And The Lion King's great too.

Les Miserables is spectacular, and written by the same people who did Miss Saigon, so it might be a good bet.

Phantom of the Opera tends to get mixed reactions- I know people who've seen it 18 times and think it's the most amazing show in the world, and people who consider it self-indulgent schmaltz (myself included ).

My all time favourite show though is Anything Goes, which I've somehow managed to see 7 times, and it gets better everytime. It's really witty, the dancing's wonderful, and the songs are all classics. Unfortunately it closes on Friday , but if it comes near you on the national tour, I'd very much recommend it.

(I'm a complete musical buff, did you notice? )

We went to see the Queen show - We Will Rock You a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutley fantastic. If you like Queen music its a must see, everyone was singing along, clapping and doing that clap clap point thing. By the time it got to the interval we said that we definately wanted to see it again. I have to admit I cried just at the sheer power and emotion of it all. It was brilliant.

The Lion King is really superb theatre - I know people who are not into "the Disney thing" but really loved this show. We were knocked out by it! What a cast!

I'm afraid I am in two minds about "We Will rock You" - we did have a great time and musically it is incredible! It is a show where the audience already create a terrifc atmosphere before it has started and the singing and the musos are really brilliant BUT that is what carries it. The storyline and script are awful.

Kaylee when I saw Miss Saigon - ages ago now! - I had to find a deserted corridor in the interval as I could not hold back the tears!! We were in the circle and you could have heard a pin drop and I was SO worried I was going to make one of those ghastly sobbing noises, LOL!!! DH was feeding me tissues non-stop at one point! Oh the shame !! Were you able to keep dry-eyed?

There are so many great show Kaylee. We go to london regularly to see shows. if you are after a cheap break we often stay at a travel Inn out at Beckton. It is about £55 per room per night, it is cheaper because it isn't in central London. The beauty of it is that it has the Dockland Light Railway right next door, so you can but a 1 day travel card get the train in, about 30 mins to Tower Gateway and then straight on the underground wherever you want to go. We tend to do it like this cos we go so regularly and it is expensive to stay in town. However there are obviously some beautiful hotels in central London.

As for the shows, you can't really go wrong with Mamma Mia. It is a real feel good show and I always come out smiling, the same can be said for Joseph. I enjoyed Lion King it is really lovely. I am one of thoses people who adore Phantom (yes I have seen it 10 times!!!) Les Mis is fantastic as well if you like that sort of thing. There are countless other great shows as well I could mention , i won't bore you with all the details.

Suzi how can you say such things about Phantom?! My mum and I love it but then I suppose since it's you I can allow you to have your own opinion.

Les Miserables would be my recommendation, it's amazing and if you like Miss Saigon then it's almost certain you'd like Les Mis. It's a bit depressing but oh it's wonderful.

The Lion King is also incredible and well worth seeing if you get the chance, especially since you're obviously a disney fan!

I wasn't keen on Chicago myself but it is very upbeat and exciting to watch. I did get to see Marti Pellow though so it wasn't too painful. The story was just a little too unbelievable for me which is ironic since it's based on a real story.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also good, a lot more pantomime like than the others but then I suppose that's what you'd expect.

Blood Brothers is another one which is just great but waiting for the end is just so awful!
